Hi guys,

I could really use some help/advice here.  A friend from work is buying a guitar from me and he needs it tomorrow as we finish up then for christmas.  Its an Ibanez GRX70 electric Metal Style guitar.  Here's the problem..

Its never been used much and it played fine until I put new strings on tonight.  I was in a rush and changed them all at once.  Major mistake I feel.  Now its a nightmare/impossible to get in tune.  The  low E and A strings also buzz quite badly.  And that's not all!!  When you play the strings really hard there is fret buzz but also a sort of what I can only describe as warped/reverberating sound coming from the body.  This is with the guitar unplugged.  So my question is this..

Is the guitar broken/finished?  If not, what could I adjust?  I have the correct tools and its pretty easy to adjust the truss rod if I loosen a few strings.  I'm really desperate here.  The moneys not an issue but I dont wanna let my mate down as its for his son and I'm leaving him a bit short.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance you guys can provide.

Regards,

Joe.

Hi guys,

I know that you should only be buying an instrument that you've played and that even the same models of same brand don't even sound/play alike.  I've been playing for a few years.  The problem is I've played a few instruments from both brands in stores but not the exact models as I can't seem to find them within a reasonable distance.  Generally though, I was pretty impressed by the G Series guitars, both sound and feel.  Maybe more so than Ibanez models in the same bracket.  However, I have read rave reviews about that particular Ibanez and would like to give it a whirl.  So I thought I'd post and see if anyone had any experience of them..  Thanks again.

Joe.

Hi guys,

I'm trying to decide between a few guitars that I'm looking at.  Any advice would be great.  I've listed 2 of them below.  They are the front runners at the moment.  If you know of a real steal in the £350 bracket please say!  Thanks in advance..

Thanks again Pix.  Great advice there.  I'll try a few of the ones you mentioned over the next week or two..

I probably play about 50/50 fingerpicking/strumming so maybe a good all rounder?  Its mainly rock/folk music I play.  I'll try to give you an idea of what I've learned recently.   I'll play anything by the great man (Springsteen).  I've also added several Matchbox 20 numbers recently.  Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive(all parts) is a recent one.  Creedence, Dylan, Kings of Leon, Nickelback, Tom Waits, Tom Petty, Killers, Del Amitri, Van Morrison, Queen, Counting Crows, Guns n Roses, Johnny Cash, Led Zep, Metallica (for old times sake!) and a million others are all bands that I like.  Just decided to throw in a bunch of artists off the top of my head to give you an idea..

I've been strumming for a few years but decided to learn other stuff 6 months or so ago and I can't believe the progress I've made.  I love the size of my Yamaha dread but I have it in my head that I would prefer a different shape.  Just for a different sound/contrast.  I'd like a cutaway this time too.  I'm selling an Ovation Applause on ebay just now as it just wasn't for me.  I don't think I'm too bothered about the nut width.  Which probably means I don't know enough about it!

I generally research for hours on end when buying as it paid off last time.  I Couldn't be happier with the FG730s.  Thanks again for all the advice dude.  Much appreciated.

Nice one Pix!  That's exactly what I wanted to know.  I figured that if it doesn't mention solid top then it doesn't have one.  I'm gonna bin that idea now as I want amazing sound and not amazing looks!

I know its not a great deal of cash but if anyone can recommend a solid top in the £250-£350 range I'd be grateful for the advice.  Also, are Ibanez electros any good in this range?  They seem to be slated at UG but I've heard others say they are amazing value.  I'm gonna head to the stores and try before I buy but some input from you guys would be invaluable.  Thanks again.

Regards,

Joe.

P.S.  I'm currently playing a Yamaha FG730s so I don't want something that sounds too similar..  Now don't get me wrong, the Yamaha is awesome its just that I want something a little different..  Solid Cedar maybe?

Hi guys,

I know I should be looking at solid tops as opposed to laminates but I'm upgrading now and I see there are several guitars in my budget with quilt tops..  What does this mean?  Here's one I've been looking at.  Thanks in advance.

Joe.

Hey Doug,

Thanks for the advice..  That's exactly what I was looking for to get me started.  Been learning a few matchbox 20 songs of late so I'm planning to plug in tonight and see how I go..  Funnily enough, there was a legendary guitar teacher at my school in Scotland called Doug Smith.  All you guys must be guitar gurus!  Thanks again mate..  Much appreciated.  I'll let you know how I get on..

Regards,

Joe.

Hi guys,

I bought a SD Woody HC soundhole pickup to give it a try..  It arrived yesterday..  Maybe you guys could help me with some amp settings??

I just want a kind of standard plugged in tone to begin with..  I have a Marshall G15R CD.. The settings are as follows..

Gain 1
Gain 2
Treble
Contour
Bass
Master Volume
Reverb

What should I set them to between 0 and 10?  (Roughly)

I play mainly rock/folk..  Strumming and Fingerstyle..

Thanks again for any advice..

Cheers,

Joe.

Thanks again guys..  Some excellent advice there!

I love my Yamaha Alvee..  At first I thought the neck was a little thin but I'm used to it now..  And the sound is fantastic..  I got my FG730s (Tobacco Sunburst) from Imuso for £190.  What a steal!

Funnily enough I was back home at the weekend and I went to guitar guitar..  Twice!!  Didn't buy anything though..  They don't really stock that many in my budget..  Only one G series..  Staff were pointing me towards a freshman but it didn't have that wow factor..

Thanks Nela.

If I'm honest I'm not very good so I don't know too much about acoustic amps..  I appreciate the advice though.  Never gigged or anything like that.  I've had my Ovation plugged in.. I can't quite get used to the bowlback though..  It seems pretty awkward but it was one of my first guitars..  The amp is a Marshall G15RCD.  I can pick things like Tracy Chapman's Fast Car/some Springsteen acoustic stuff etc..  That's about my level..  Love playing though!

Cheers,

Joe.

Hey guys,

Sorry if there's a thread on this but I couldn't even find a search function on the forum!

I need some advice.. I can strum/pick a load of songs but am trying to get into fingerstyle more..  Folk/Rock stuff..  I have several guitars but I only play two of them..  They are the Yamaha FG730S and an Ovation Applause AE28 whatever.. Time to sell that one I think.. I'm in the market for a decent electro acoustic and I am swaying towards a Takamine but I'm open to suggestions.. I don't really want to go over £300 and any cheaper would be a bonus. Obviously I would prefer a solid top and lowish action would be a plus. I know that electros under £200 are pretty crap but I'm hoping I could get something half decent in the £300 range..

So.. Any suggestions? Lets hear them!

Many thanks in advance..

Regards,

Joe.

Hi guys,

I started a new thread as its a pretty unique question.  After much frustration stuck in a strumming rut I'm now starting to make some pretty good progress.  I've been playing Fast Car by Tracy Chapman (a lot) recently..  Its not too tough to play and it sounds fantastic to pick and sing along..  So, here's my question..

Can anyone recommend any other acoustic songs that would be in roughly the same ability range?  I don't mind a bit more difficult either as I am starting to progress in terms of getting up and down the fretboard..  Any genre of music is cool..

Any suggestions gratefully received..  Thanks in advance..

Regards,

Joe.

Hi guys,

Sorry if this has been covered but its a fairly specific request.  My mate is coming down this weekend for a jam.  I've been playing on and of for a couple of years and he's been playing about 6 months.  I know a lot of chords and can play a few licks/riffs but nothing fancy..  So here's what I need to know..

Can anyone recommend any songs that have two (fairly) easy guitar parts?  Songs that we could pick up pretty quickly..  Preferably rock/metal but really any genre will do..  If you could post any helpful links that would be fantastic!  Thanks in advance for any replies..  Much appreciated.

Regards,

Joe..

Hi guys,

I've been on chordie for ages but I'm pretty new to the forum.  I'm looking for some advice.  Anything!  I've watched Justin's palm muting but I just cant seem to get it..

Its either..

1.  All strings kind of squeal/screech or,
2. I mute them dead, or
3. A combination of both.

Sounds like the worsty cacophony since the Bard was allowed to play in Asterix!  Its pretty frustrating.  I just wondered if anyone had some hands on experience/advice that they could offer.  Thank in advance.

Joe.

P.S.  Sorry if this has been covered but I couldn't find anything..
