My first guitar was some generic strat out of a Sears catalog. I actually wish I still had it. I could probably make it a decent guitar now.

Have any of you ever played a McPherson acoustic guitar? I've never played one, but I know many people who do because the guy who designed them used to go to my church. Here's their MySpace: http://profile.myspace.com/138736070 and website: www.mcphersonguitars.com Their sound is really beautiful.

I've played a McPherson twice. They are really nice guitars but I don't think they're worth as much as they cost. Maybe if money was no object. lol

I really think, generally speaking, once you get to about $1,000 the actual sound quality of the guitar doesn't usually improve. At that point most of the money spent goes toward making the guitar look pretty.

Hi Topdown. Thanks for the warm welcome. I've been playing since I was a kid. 20 years now. I like a lot of different styles but I guess I'm mainly into heavy metal, classic rock, country and blues. Favorite artists would be Rush, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, 311, Brad Paisley, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Brent Mason, Metallica and Pantera. I live in California about an hour north of Bakersfield.

I stumbled onto this forum because someone local told me I should check it out for tab but I liked the way the forum was set up without too much cluttter so I figured I'd register. smile

I think there's some truth to what the thread starter is saying. Sometimes we play a particular instrument (and pay more for it) because of perception when the reality is that there are some other instruments of equal (sometimes greater) quality. I recently bought an acoustic to step up from the Takamine acoustic I've played for the last 7 years. I've played for a long time so I know what I like. I tried about 20 acoustics and passed on the Martin's and other bigger acoustic brands for a Larrivee. I got it for $800 and I couldn't find any other guitar under $1500 that I liked more. I guess the moral of the story is that it's fine to get an idea for what you might want from seeing and hearing other people playing it, but you should go and play as many as possible and pick the one YOU think fits you best. Ultiamtely that's what matters most.
