My Tanglewood (TW15NS) is an absolute beauty! The action is a little high and it took some getting used to but now I'm fine with it: you just need to build up your finger strength. I had thought about taking it to get it lowered a little but then I read that it could have an adverse effect on the sound. because I adore the noise it makes, it's staying as it is. You could always try lighter strings if you find it uncomfortable.

Re: I-Pod or Zune? (11 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
The only thing I would say in favour of the ipod is that every company seems to be making accessories for it and not much else. I have a Zen Vision M (which I don't think they make any more) but which I love. It is really easy to use, works with Windows media Player and does all of the stuff that Zurf's doesn't. When it craps out though, I'll be getting an ipod simply because I can then get a whole bunch of stuff, like hi-fi systems, that are designed to run with it.

Play each one when the notion takes you. I go through cycles: for a while all I wanted was to thrash the electric, then I went to the acoustic for singing, then electric blues, then acoustic - yada yada yada. DON'T SELL IT. You will regret it. Maybe you need a new peace of equipment to inspire you. I don't necessarily mean a guitar or amp: buy a pedal, or a slide, or listen to some different music. Sorry for rambling. Bit pissed. But seriously, I had a great time today with my Tele, tomorrow I may play acoustic, it depends on the hangover and the mood.

What type of tuner is it? You need one that will go 2 whole steps down for drop C.

Re: Losing sound on bends (7 replies, posted in Electric)
Check your action. I re-strung a dot a while back and gave it a serious clean. I knocked the action down a bit without realising and had the same problem on the high E and B strings. A half turn on the bridge fixed it.

Re: hollow bodies versus hollow bodies & semi hollow bodies (7 replies, posted in Electric)
I love my Epi Dot. I play everything on it although metal is its least favourite. I run it through an Epi Valve Junior boosted either with a Bad Monkey or a Big Muff. I love the look of it and that's the main reason I got it. I wasn't in the market for a high end guitar like a Gretsch or a Gibby so I tried a few in the same price area: the Dot won for me. That said, I have always coveted a White Falcon: that guitar is pure secks!

Re: Learning to Sing AND play (35 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Pick a really easy song, for example Nirvana's About a Girl, and do it slowly. Put the song on your mp3 player and stick it in the car on repeat. Sing it until you know the lyrics so you don't have to think about them. Then sit with your guitar and play the song through humming the vocal line. Then just do it. It helps if you have somebody else there who can sing the song while you play and then just join in when you feel comfortable. Took me ages for it to click but when it did it felt bloody marvellous.

Re: anybody got any tool (15 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Tool EMO?????? Maynard would be very upset! I agree they are a deep and dark band but there's a whole lot more to them than sludgy drop D riffs. If you listen to their back catalogue it shows a band in constant change, really artistic and, at times, a bit up themselves - some of the stuff on 10,000 days is a bit pointless - but they are one of the most exciting bands on the alt rock / metal scene.
On topic, nothing immediately springs to mind for an acoustic mix. You might be better trying something off A Perfect Circle's eMotive album (APC are Maynard's other band).

Re: Need Some Help/Advice (19 replies, posted in Electric)
Have you looked at Agile guitars? I have never seen a bad review and they are certainly in the same price range as the OLP. I haven't played one myself as the shipping costs to the UK are too much but you should check it out. On the amp, you will see many mixed reviews on Spiders - some love them and others truly loathe them. There are other modellers out there: I have a Roland Cube 30 and am very impressed, there's also the Vox AVT series which are really sweet. If you are just starting out the main things you need to be right are tuning stability, action, neck relief and intonation IMO. If you go really cheap, all of these will suffer and, especially with single coil guitars, distortion will make them screech like a banshee so be careful. Yamaha Pacificas are good value as well and they should be in a similar price bracket.
You also mention Epiphones. I have a Dot and it's beautiful BUT quality varies greatly. I've played others that were awful: try before you buy and buy the one you try.
Good luck.

Very cool guy. Pickapart was the first song I heard and it blew me away. Listen to the Trio an awful lot now.

Re: Vintage AV3 with 3 stacked humbuckers? (1 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
The AV3 - that's the semi-acoustic (like a Gibson 335)? Vintage get generally good reviews but I have'nt played this particular guitar, although I do have their LP copy (VS100TSB). It was my first decent guitar and I still play it regularly. Semis can be notoriously inconsistent in quality and to be honest I would be wary of ordering without trying.
Just looked at the specs and they sound impressive - solid carved maple top! My Epi Dot cost around the same and it's a laminate - I love it though.

But the Foo Fighters one I just quoted is actually Dave Grohl, linked from Youtube. I would think it unlikely that Mr Grohl actually posted the chord chart and is a member of this, admittedly rather good, site. Or perhaps he is...?
Pity, bloody good idea.

Wow. Just wow. Who comes up with this crap? Same people who said that the Sex Pistols could "only be improved by sudden death" (sic). It was actually said, in 1977, by a Member of Parliament. I may not have the quote exactly right, but it's pretty close.

Hi. How does the add video to songs thing work? I wanted to add a really cool acoustic version of Like a Stone by Audioslave but when I clik the add video button I get an error "link not found". Thanks.

Re: Another One Of Those "What Amp Should I Get" Topics... (6 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I have a Cube 30 and it's very versatile: the 60 will handle small gigs fine.
Vox Valvetronix are excellent.
Marshall MG and Line 6 Spider I personally would not touch.
Dunno about the others on your list as I haven't tried them.
If you are gigging, even smallish shows, a 30W solid state is not going to do it. You need at least 50W, preferably a bit more.

Re: Has anyone tried these guitars? (18 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Vintage again. Or Squier - they have a bad name but you can get lucky.
The feedback gitaardocphil mentions on the Stagg - thats cheap, nasty pickups. If you have inferior single coils (doesn't happen so much with humbuckers) as soon as you put distortion or overdrive on at volume they scream. Really horrible.

I've Grovers on my Tanglwood acoustic and my Epi Dot. Rock solid tuning even after banging around in a case. I've heard good stuff about Sperzel as well but have no experience of them.

Re: Has anyone tried these guitars? (18 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Here's the website:
http://www.jhs.co.uk/guitar.htm
I don't think they do a Jag but they copy most others. My first decent axe was their LP copy the V100TSB and I still play it today. It's obviously not a Gibby bt I paid £169 for it so I can't complain. Expecially good beginner guitars.
They sell all over the UK - there's a supplier list on the website. I know you're pretty far from a music store but if it's a good one, go there and stay all day. try everything in your price range and get what sounds and feels good. As I said in my previous post, low end guitars are notorius for inconsistency in quality and, even though I recommend the Vintage brand, I'm sure they produce the odd turkey. I know guys who have ordered high-end guitars on the web only to be very disappointed.
