Topic: Squire Affinity - Telecaster (8 replies, posted in Electric)
Hi All,
I have made my initial foray into the world of electric axes. I picked up a used Squire Affinity Telecaster this weekend. After reading all the reviews, i thought this was a good bang for my buck that would allow me to upgrade into something nicer, if I choose to do so.
I was hoping some electric players could assist in helping me get up to speed - I apologize if these are rudimentary.......
* What decent budget minded amp can anyone suggest? (was thinking of a Roland 15Cube)
* What strings can anyone suggest I use
* Any info on the bridge "guides" those things that the strings are threaded through? What height should they be set at? Are they all set to the same height?
* What woudl you recommend as switch and pick-up modifications?
Any and all feedback is welcomed. Thanks for looking - I appreciate the help.........
Thanks,
P.J.

Re: B Chord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (34 replies, posted in Acoustic)
All I can say is keep at it. I can actually play a B and B flat - but landing them smoothly in a song is whole other challenge. I am using all four fingers (index forming the bar) and the (middle, ring and picky forming the A shape). I have seen many use the only the ring finger to "hinge" bar the A shape. I can't get my ring finger to behave that way and when I do attempt it, I end up flipping the bird.....
Now if I can just get master the SMOOTH changes to and from these evil chords.
Peace,
P.J.

Re: Acoustic v. AcousticElectric (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
To All,
Thanks so much for all of your advice and insight. It has given me much to think about. Given that I have been at this "guitar thing" for less than 1 year, and I can't foresee a definite need for plugging in. I have made the decision to go with an acoustic as opposed to an acousticelectric.
If I do need to plug in - there seem to quite a few alternatives, if and when the time comes.
As always, thanks again for helping me make my decision.
Cheers,
P.J.

Topic: Acoustic v. AcousticElectric (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hey gang,
This may be a
I was hoping some of the veterans could share their insight. I am thinking about my next guitar purchase (currently have an acoustic) and was wondering what are the pros / cons of the selecting another acoustic over an acousticelectric? I notice that the acousticelectrics are usually a cut-out body type. One of my main questions is does an acoustic electric sound good even if it isn't plugged in?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated in helping me make my decision.
Thanks much,

Topic: Need help with new guitar selection - Washburn (3 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hey all,
I know from previous posts that the only real way to choose an acoustic is to play a bunch of them and go with what feels right.
That being said, I have been given the opportunity to purchase a new Washburn (6 string) acoustic at a significantly reduced rate. However, I won't have the ability to play and see what feels good/right, and with my less than one year into playing guitar I am afraid I wouldn't be able to tell anyway.
It would be much appreciated if any of you with Washburn experiences can pass along recommendations.
The 2 models I have honed in on are the D42SP and D52SW. To quote Don Corleone - they made me an offer I can't refuse......... LOL
Thanks much,

Re: beginner songs (8 replies, posted in Acoustic)
stryker,
I have found that "Atlantic City" by Bruce Springsteen was a very helpful tune for me when I started out. It does however include Em, in addition to the G, C and D, which I don't think should present you any challenges.
This was my first "goal" tune, ever since I saw Levon Helm open his "Midnight Ramble" with it. The tune also aided in practicing the G to C chord change, wich I initially found awkward.
Enjoy!!!

SouthPaw,
Thanks for the words. Unfortunately, I can't seem to "mash down" finger 4 or finger 3 for that matter with any success. I am using finger 1 as the bar and finger 2, finger 3, finger 4 in the A-shape
Thanks,
P.J.

A-Shaped examples
Index finger = Bar
Middle, Ring, Pink = A Shape
Bar on First fret = A#/Bb
Bar on Second fret = B
Bar on Third fret = C
Bar on Fourth fret = C#/Db
And so on and so on.
Looking for exercise to help me become more proficient
Thanks,

Topic: A-shaped Bar Chords - Help (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hi All,
I was wondering if any of the veterans had any exercises that would help me with mastering A-shaped Bar chords? I am currently using my middle, ring and pinky fingers, as opposed to a ring finger mini-bar (i just cant seem to get it to work....) for the A shape.
Anything (tips, tricks, exercises, sites, etc,) would be appreciated.
Thanks much,

Topic: Pinky callous! Whoo Hoo for me (2 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Alright folks - it has been 8 months since I started my 6 stringed journey and I am happy to report that I officially have a pinky callous on my fretting hand. I am doing that "bar chord thang" and although my hand has the strength to play them, transitioning to them is still a bit "clunky" to say the least. However, I am seeing gradual improvement in my abilities. Just as I thought that going from a G chord to C chord would never be something I could master (which I now have down pretty well), I am sure this will just take time and practice. "Time and Practice"- those 2 consistent words I have read in just about every post.
Thanks to those that have posted topics that have allowed me grow and develop my guitar skills. Pretty soon I may actually feel comfortable saying that I can play guitar.............
Until my next progress report.

I am attempting to learn a little slide work. Boxcar Blues is a haunting 1:30 of cool sounding slide work. Anyone out there who can provide the tab for "Boxcar Blues" by Kenny Brown would be greatly appreciated.
FYI - This soundtrack is a killer - check it out and I think you will agree.

I am glad to see this topic. I thought i was the only one suffering from a guitar injury. I have been so psyched to start learing some tunes that I think i came down with guitart elbow in my strumming hand. I am fighting through it........ Anyone else ever had their elbow hurt from stumming?
Thanks,

Topic: Barre chord guidance (3 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I have begun to successfully play the e-shaped bar chords, namely F - which I am totally jacked about!!!! However to make this change in the context of a tune is a bit clunking & chunking.
Are there any tips and tricks that I can use to help me move from open chords (C, G, D) to the F barre chord. I know the short answer is practice, practice, practice and I have picked some songs, where there is a "sprinkling" of the F chord in it to practice it
I was just wondering if the veterans had an inside track on finger changing technique (i.e. put the barre finger down first, then the E-shape, or vice versa).
Anything would be helpful to get my fingers trained to make this move more graceful.
Thanks much,
P.J.

Re: A GOAL SONG??????????? (16 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Mine first goal song was "Atlantic City" by Bruce. I saw Levon Helm do it at one of his famed Midnight Rambles (just him on his mandolin) and was like Holy Shite, Whoa! I want to learn how to play that. I am proud to say that after 6 months I have achieved my first goal.
My second goal song was "Good Riddance - time of your life" by GreenDay until I heard this delta dripping blues song called "BoxCar Blues" by Kenny Brown (Big Bad Love - soundtrack). I played it for more teacher yesterday and I look forward to "figuring it out" I will keep you posted as this will be a voyage into the workd of the slide nad alternate tunings.
