I started with an acoustic, Seagull S6 Cedar Burst, gorgeous guitar, not hugely expensive, and really beautiful sound.  Downside is it is just way to big for me.  I was getting very discouraged.  I then visited a friend and played some of his electrics and I was in love.  I stopped on the way home and bought a Fender Stratocaster and I just love it.  My playing has improved imensely in part due to the comfort with my guitar.  I now have a Jay Turser  134QMT which is a jazz style guitar and my pride and joy a Gibson Les Paul Goddess in violet burst.  All three sound great although very different from each other.  In a nut shell start with an electric, I personally have found it much easier.  Most definetly try lots of guitars out first to see how they feel in your hands when you play and how the different ones sound.
