If you're looking for video of playing style and a simple, but great sounding song to learn, the following is a link to George Harrison playing a live version of the song 'Cheer Down' from the lethal weapon soundtrack.
Perhaps not your cup of tea musically, but it's where I started on the slide, and I found it fairly simple.
Of course, that was before I realised it only went uphill from here.
Good Luck.
Don't laugh, as he is by no means a guitar virtuoso, but I started playing guitar to accompany my singing inspired by Roy Orbison. Of course, when I realised there was more to playing than chords on the first three frets, my chief inspirations shifted a little. I would have to say my inspirations on lead playing are David Gilmour (in front by miles), Mark Knopfler and George Harrison.
I've had people tell me that they prefer the feel of the maple necks, but having played both myself, I can't feel any difference. It seems only in the looks. I'm not sure if the difference in feel might come from the finish on the neck, more than the wood itself. Either way, I much prefer maple personally.
Toss up really. For me, in terms of feel and sound, nobody does it better than Fender, and all things considered, their Mark Knopfler signature strat, Rosewood Tele, and upcoming David Gilmour Strat are the most beautiful instruments I have seen in a long time, and promise a great sound.
Can't go past upyerkilt's suggestion, David Gilmour on Comfortably Numb, played equally well live in any concert you can find a recording of. In my opinion you just can't beat that.
