Hey wade...if you throw out the names of some of the groups/artists you like we can probably narrow down some recommendations for you.  Let us know and I'll be sure to see what I can find for you!  :-)

I know what you mean, pastfan.  It's so much easier, just starting out to use a capo.  Especially when it comes to learning barres!  I think, like a few others already said, you can play just about anything with a capo.  I use it a lot to find the range I feel most comfortable singing in.  It sounds like it would be really, really high, but I've found lately that I really enjoy singing with the capo on the 7th fret.  The capo was a lifesaver for me in the beginning until I built up more finger strength.

You should check out some acoustic songs by this guy named Joshua Radin.  He's got a lot of great acoustic stuff and he likes using the capo too. :-)  Welcome to Chordie, btw.

Ha!  I'm late on this thread...but...

Things I hate:

* When favorite bands decide to turn political and start flapping their gums about politics.  I said it once and I said it again - music should UNITE people and not DIVIDE them
*  The whole Democrat/Liberal vs. Republican/Conservative thing going on in the U.S.  It's gotten way too mean and hostile when it really doesn't need to be - it's simply a political difference - GET OVER IT!  Insulting the other party won't make them suddenly decide to vote for your side's candidates
*  California-type Paris Hilton-wannabe chicks that bake themselves to death, bleach their hair, wear large sunglasses in a pathetic attempt to look like an incognito celebrity, wearing sweatpants with 4" high heels, and act stupid because it's "cool" and weave all over the highways while sending text-messages on their cell phones
*  Celebrities that get away with everything because they're famous
*  The lack of female role models for my daughter
*  The smell of roadkill
*  The fact that there IS no unbiased news source
*  People that act as if I should be against the war because my husband is in the military
*  Those that can't fight fair without insulting someone and calling them "uneducated" simply because their opinion differs
*  Those that jeopardize the lives of our troops and allied troops by spouting off stupid things to the media that should remain confidential
*  Conspiracy theories about everything
*  The fact that MySpace is one of the most popular sites on the 'net today and the developers STILL can't keep it working half the time
*  Cattiness, pettiness, jealousy
*  Hypocritical people and/or actions
*  When my husband farts and blames it on our kids
*  When my husband farts and blames it on me
*  Green Day

And that about sums it up.

I can't answer that question, Trip...I'm kinda new to guitars, but I did want to thank everyone who have answered Trippy's question.  All your advice was really helpful to me.  I read a lot of it just a day or so before I finally got barre chords down really well.

One thing that really helped me was one of those finger-strengthener things, like this:  http://www.gripmaster.net/gripmaster/

Everyone else here is dead-on with advice about modifying your guitar, though.  My first guitar was a Yamaha acoustic that I could not play no matter how hard I tried.  The body of the guitar was huge, the strings too high off the fretboard, and the strings were really thick.  It's not a bad guitar - just way too big for me.  I started borrowing my husband's much smaller guitar and that's what I've learned on.  It's MUCH easier to play.

If you've been trying for a while and still having difficulties, it probably isn't that you don't have talent or that you suck...it probably is a problem of not having the right guitar for YOU.  I'd check into those modifications everyone is talking about.  It made all the difference in the world for me just playing a different guitar.  Good luck, man... ;-)

Trippy and Zurf - you can do it!  Keep trying.  For some reason, I really felt it in the wrist so I'm thinking it must have something to do with building strength in the wrist as well.  I wish you both the best.

I was trying to play Rachael Yamagata's 'Reason Why' -  it's a slow song, but has two barre chords thrown in in a row.  The rest of the song was all open chords so I started getting really frustrated because I could play about 75% of the song.  Thanks Larry!  I'll give "Lodi" a try for more practice.  And Patrick...you are absolutely right.  I remember the way it felt when I learned to play ONE chord...and then the next...and then I was finally able to progress chords fast enough to sound like a song.

I think my next thing to tackle will be picking.  I can play all-chord songs pretty well, but need some pick work.

All right Trippy & Zurf, I'm sending some barre chord zen or something your way.  I believe in you.  I think the only reason I got these chords so quickly is because I play night and day.  My poor guitar is begging ME for a break...hehe - Thanks again everyone for the congrats.  I'm just so happy having passed one milestone on the way to many bigger ones.

"Fall Apart Today" by Schuyler Fisk (the daughter of Sissy Spacek).

I don't know if anyone knows where to find them...There weren't any on Ultimate Guitar...and I am not quite advanced enough yet to pick out the chords by ear.  It's completely acoustic and it sounds as if it would be easy to transcribe.  I'd love someone for life if they ever transcribed this one.

Video is on YouTube, kind of a crappy visual, but the audio is there:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW6LErKfbsI

Last weekend, after looking at my husband and saying, "There is NO way I am ever going to get these stupid barre chords..."  I later picked up my guitar...started playing this song that I really have wanted to play but couldn't because of an intimidating F & Bm chord in there...and I DID it.

For those still trying to get barre chords...try shifting your thumb around the neck of the guitar, pulling the guitar in a little closer, and something else I didn't realize - it IS kind of in the wrist.  When I played them the first few times I really felt it in my wrist and all the way up my Tricep.  Weird.

Sorry - I was so excited I had to share that news!  I want to scream from the rooftop that I finally learned barre chords but nobody else in the world seems to care, of course.  What's so weird is that after you finally get them to play right a time or two, from then on, they actually ARE really easy.  Anyway, yay!  I'm so excited!  Thanks for listening to me raving on like a moron! :-)

Class!  I absolutely loved 'Lies of Despair' and 'The Atheist Song' - you are a very gifted guitarist and vocalist.

And the Indian Chants song really threw me for a moment.  Reminded me a lot of Enigma or Massive Attack...something along those lines.  Cool that you went out on a limb with experimental too.  Thanks for sharing!

Hey Ken!  I just tried to add you as a Bebo friend so you know it's me.  I started an account on there and I don't have any friends yet so I'm feeling like a loser.  (lol)

I'm going to listen to your songs, now... :-)

Hey Samantha...I think you and I would get along!- some great tunes.  I especially love My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy,  and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

As far as my favorite genres...I don't really have a favorite and least favorite genre.  I, very literally, listen to a little bit of everything.  I really am into the indie music scene right now.  There is so much great music out there that hasn't been heard on the radio.  There's a great site out there, now, called ilike.com that lets you join and list your favorite songs and get and give recommendations to others.  If anyone is on there, let me know!  We can be music pals.

I can sit for hours listening to unsigned artists on Garageband.com, too.  I don't really judge a song by its' genre.  I think I judge on a case-by-case basis.  There are some rap songs I even like.  Right now, my favorite artists of the moment are Schuyler Fisk, Joshua Radin (if you like Simon & Garfunkel or Elliot Smith, check him out!), Josh Woodward, Metric, Rachael Yamagata, Sia, and a lot of the newer punk bands.  There's actually a lot of great music out right now...and I haven't even heard half of it!

If you can play more than the handful of chords I can play, then you are much, much cooler than me...and that has to account for something! ;-)

Yeah, thanks everyone who gave Nealy advice.  I was able to glean some helpful tips from this, too...I'm about to start tackling barre chords also.  Thank you!

I went to a wedding once where the song was 'My Heart Will Go On' and I kept scratching my head and wondering just how that made sense.  Isn't that about someone dying and someone else going on?  It kind of creeped me out to be honest.

There are actually websites of the worst wedding songs:  http://www.keepersoflists.org/index.php?lid=1450

And this one is a GREAT article because it explains why those songs are mistakes...unfortunately, something screwy happened with the article and the names of the songs disappeared, but one of the commenters clued everyone in, thankfully: http://www.askmen.com/dating/dating_top … _list.html

I read that article a while back and laughed about it.

I'm Kelly - Devildog's Doll because the Germans once said the American Marines fought like "hounds from hell" so Marines earned the nickname "Devildogs" and I am married to a Marine, so hence the name.  It's nothing satanic!  lol

I'm 29, my husband is 33 and we're both lovers of music.  I'm originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA and he's originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma and between the two of us, we've traveled quite a bit and now live in southern California.

My favorite place in the world is Ireland.  I stayed two weeks in Cork city once and never wanted to leave.  I think it's great that we have such a variety of people and personalities here!  Where distance, politics, and differences may divide...let music unite us all!  smile

Or you can always sing this wonderful song by Josh Woodward if someone is heckling you and nobody is bothering to help you out...This cracks me up:

If you like that, you should check out some of his other songs.  That is one amazingly talented man.

My husband and I are in southern California and always open to jam sessions with new friends.  We've got some original songs we've written, too, that we're thinking of maybe getting a band together to play.  My husband is a good rhythm guitarist...but we kinda need a lead and a bass.  We have an occasional drummer.  I'm still working on learning guitar, but for the time being I either sing or listen.

Anyway, shoot me an e-mail if you need some jam partners.

I have 2 - a Fender Telecaster and a Yamaha acoustic that I have a hard time playing because the strings are so high off the fret and I have little fingers - I'm working on the finger strength to play that one.

My husband has a Mexican acoustic that I steal from him all the time and a Gibson electric that I like stealing from him, too...uhhh, I guess that means I actually have four.  lol

Oh man, I forgot this one and can't even believe I'm going to suggest it...but there's always James Blunt's 'You're Beautiful'

Well, here's your first grandkid photos:  http://photos.yahoo.com/devildogs_doll

They grow up so fast!  I've been working on clearing up my wrinkles, too...I turn 30 next month so they're just starting to appear, which means I'd better play more I guess.  LOL

Your 2 grown men are pretty smart when it comes to not having kids...but I only say that after having cleaned up a dumped bowl of cheerios, a plastic ball in my guitar, wondering how spaghettios got in the baby's hair, and finding some dvds that somehow mysteriously appeared in my dryer.  *sigh*  Kids!

Ray LaMontagne - Hold You In My Arms

I LOVE this guy!  He sounds old-school, but he's actually a new artist!  Seriously, his stuff sounds like a classic, but it's new!  He's got quite a few really good songs.  This one sounds like it would be easy to sing, too:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTmUJ8mp7pU   - not a great video, but the only one I could find.

However, if you decide you want to propose to this girl, I have the PERFECT song for you....

Question by the Old 97's

Here's a video of a guy playing this song on acoustic...it's not the original, but it'll do.  It seems I like music that it's hard to find videos for...lol:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHbHZkIjCnc

As far as more popular stuff...not sure how difficult these are to play, but....

LifeHouse - You and Me (what girl wouldn't love a line like, "And I don't know why, but I can't take my eyes off you".
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You (okay, so a chick sings it,...but it's the easiest song in the world to play and it's sexy!)
Joshua Radin (w/ Schuyler Fisk) - Paperweight ("Mess up my bed with me...kick off the covers...I'm waiting" - okay, maybe not...she might get the wrong idea...lol)
Dashboard Confessionals - Hands Down (I love this one)
John Mayer - Love Song For No One (and then finish it by saying....thank you for finally coming along...okay, too cheesy?)
Sting - Fields of Gold (I've always thought this song was sexy)

And this is country, but it would melt my heart...

James Bonamy - I Don't Think I Will

Hmmm....I could do this all night, so I think I will stop.  Hope you found a song for your girl! ;-)

lol - I'm up for adoption! ;-)  I come with two really cute grandkids, too, that are 2 (a boy) and 10 months (a girl).  My husband is a Marine (a devildog), so somehow I've become Devildog's Doll and it's stuck.

Old?  No way!  You're only as old as you feel...and I've heard that playing guitar reduces wrinkles so let's keep strummin' - lol - I'm already having a blast here.  So much great music, such great forums with excellent advice from fellow musicians from beginner to advanced levels.  Everyone seems nice and helpful.

Check out 'Hello' by Schuyler Fisk.  That's the first song I learned.  It's really easy - no barre chords and really helps you learn chord progression...not to mention it's a GREAT song to sing along with.  She's an up-and-coming indie artist and really good.  She's also Sissy Spacek's daughter.  It really does make an awesome performance song and it's not over-played so it won't be something you're sick and tired of hearing before you even pick up the guitar.

Speaking of Sissy Spacek (who played Loretta Lynn in film), Loretta Lynn's early tunes 'Coal Miner's Daughter' and 'You Ain't Woman Enough' are extremely easy.  Loretta Lynn was a self-taught guitarist who learned how to play while being a mother to all her kids at the same time.  Sure, they're country as all get-out, but fun to play, even if it's just for parody's sake.

Girl here also! :-)  I'm 29 and have only seriously started learning about 3 weeks ago and I can already play one song and sing it at the same time so I'm really thrilled about that.

I'm so happy to see so many other ladies of all different ages starting to live their dreams, too.  Rock on, sisters!  Maybe we should do a songs for girls thread where we post our favorites to learn.

I hated the D chord when I first started... Then I discovered the F chord...

LOL - that's my next territory.  I think you have to have a song that you WANT to play bad enough that you're willing to do some pretty crazy finger yoga to be able to hit that note.

I just learned a song that involves a lot of switching between G, D, & C.  Switching between G & D had me cursing so much that I told my husband, "G, D, G, D...I'm having trouble switching between these GD chords!!!"

Barre chords make me cringe...though my husband claims they are the easiest thing in the world.  Until I learn to play them with ease, I'm still going to call him a jerk under my breath.  Thanks to everyone for assuring me my fear of barre chords is normal.
