Roger Guppy wrote:When you have a surname that is as unusual as mine you get used to folks getting it wrong so don't think twice about it.
When you are learning to play the guitar it is important that you start by only playing songs that you know really well and preferably with few chords in it. (In the 50's and 60's there were many songs with just three or four chords but there are fewer, I think, today).
Start by just stumming the chord on a down stroke and at one beat per bar. Sing along with the song to get familiar with the changes. Then when you are happy with the changes, put down your guitar. Listen to a recording of the song or play in in your mind and at the same time tap your right hand on your thigh in time to the music, not just a steady beat but vary it to go along with the song. Then pick up your guitar and convert that rhythm that you just tapped out into a strumming pattern.
OK easier said than done but I hope that helps.
Roger
thanks Roger. i'm trying to play songs that only have 4 to 5 chords in it, they have easy chords i just cant get the strumming. these songs are Stolen & Don't wait by Dashboard Confessional. they're my favorite band. listen to the song please and see what you think. Thanks

well i guess it will be hard for me to find someone who wants to play with me here in my place maybe because of cultural differences. dunno i think racism still exist here. you walk on the street and they look at you like you're a freak.
well anyway, im downloading some vids from youtube to study them and try to practice on someones work, i guess that way will be alright.

thanks.
no friends here dude, im a new immigrant in a new country.

You have a had a lot of good advise already posted and I can add little more to what has been said but ask question and give you one suggestion.
The question. What exactly are you stuck on? Maybe you can then be given some specific advice on how to proceed.
The suggestion. Try taking a few lessons. One to one help may be all you need to overcome the current hurdle.
I know it has already been said but to give up now is to waste all the time and effort you have already put in. I think that SouthPaw's suggestion of a short break to contemplate what you have already achieved is very sound advise.
Take care,
Roger
thanks roger. by the way, im still practising on the backing track that you sent me. thanks again for that.
i think im really having a hard time on tab reading, mostly those advance ones. just seems so confusing. and maybe lack of friends to prctice with. cant afford to do a tuition so i bought a dvd lesson.

What you're experiencing is normal. Everyone goes through it. Step back, take a few days away from your guitar and just think about what you've learned. Recall the first time you played? You've come a long way haven't you. It just takes time, patience, and sticktuitiveness. When I experience a "rut" in my playing I like to watch and listen to other guitarists. Step out of your routine and listen to something completely different than you normally do. Frustration is temporary, guitar is forever.........Hang in there,ya dig?
thanks for your encouragement dude.
cytania wrote:Added two more songs to my Beginner's Electric song book. One's a bit of an Undertones novelty you'd need to download (Mars Bars) but the other is Bang A Gong (Get it On) by T Rex, great confidence booster, going back to play it again now...
thanks cytania. but most of the song you know are songs that i dont. thanks anyway.

thanks detman. its just that its seems that i cant get any song sounding right and i cant understand some of the tabs. i dunno i get really really frustrated.
Well, what can't you understand about the tabs? You do realize that sometimes people submit tabs that are incorrect right? The problem may not be your understanding...it is probably just a bad set of tabs.
It has happened to me about 7 times since I found this site. I'll have my guitar in tune, and I know my strings are not old or dead....but the song just won't play right. So I minimize the window with the tabs that I have open and open another version of the same song's tabs from a different person.
And wouldn't ya know it....it usually sounds right when I try a different version of the tabs or chords.
Don't let little setbacks discourage you dude. If you know how the song sounds originally you can just play it as you go along and write your own tabs to it. I do that as well all the time!
If you have made it this far, you CAN go further!
I would encourage you to keep at it and find ways around the problem, don't let it stop you.

hi det.
thanks for your reply. i have a posted a topic before about getting help on how to read tabs. i think its titled "how to play this?"
i usually compare tabs here and other tab website like 'ultimate guitar', and i find them the same. i think its my playing is the problem.
thnaks for your encouragement det.

cytania wrote:How are your F and B chords NZ?
F and B are the beginning of playing barre shapes up and down the guitar neck. It's the shape being made on simple punk songs when the guitarist just appears to be moving up and down the neck real quick.
Powerchords just miss alot of it out by not playing all the strings. In a way powerchords are easier and some metal-heads use them without knowing anything else.
Look for my post on 'All Day and All Of The Night' by the Kinks, which is one big F chord barre fest.
my F and B are fine ican do them easily. okay, so powerchords are just all other chords but played some of thier strings, not all strings. so every chord can be a powerchord?
maybe im confuse because, i still dont know how to read this kind of tabs. but i understand the simple ones.
anyone kind enough to teach me how to read tabs?
hi guys thanks for your replies.
im still kinda confused though.
can you please give me an exmaple something like this, but something that is not powerchord, something more simplier. coz i really dont know powerchords yet. thanks.
what does the numbers represent? the number downwards in-line are played all together? by looking at this could you tell how to play it? does it tell you the chord?
can anyone please give me an idea on how to play this..
im confuse of the numbers in-line downwards.
