Hi,

It's been ages since I've been online here! Life has been gettng in the way ('nuff said). I have not been altogether idle though. I've become more active in my local musc scene, still writing and banging away on a guitar, set up a home studio of sorts and completed yet another RPM Challenge! I'm looking forward to getting back into this group of talented folk for feedback and encouragement as well. My long term goal is to get all my songs transcribed and saved here at Chordie. In the meantime you can listen to 2015's RMP efforts here:

Any comments, advice, ridicule, etc. is most welcome!

In this song there is a mention of 'Blue Puttees'. This is in reference to the leggings worn by the Royal Newfoundland Regiment when they embarked on the waves to fight in the First World War. Regiment was affectionately known as the 'Blue Puttees'. On the first day of the Battle of the Somme in a place called Beaumont Hamel nearly the entire regiment was killed or wounded. The Divisional Commander of the Day is noted as reporting that " It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further." We are very near marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and sadly not a lot has changed.

I am working on a commerative recording of this piece now.

Leave comments, critiques, I can take it.

Hi,
I'm in my mid fifties, writing original songs/music, doing some home recording, etc. around St. John's NL Canada. Style is what I imagine may evolve if Pink Floyd and Jerry Jeff Walker blended with a touch of traditional folk (sorta). I like it loud. Looking for interested people to jam.

Hey all, It's been a while, but the good news is that I have a bunch of songs to add that I've written while life was happening to me! I've just read the posting in chordpro format but there's nothing about minor chords...do we simply add an 'm'? eg. [em] also...capital letters?
Great site by the way! I have used it often to find chords and lyrics for mainstream songs but i'm most excited about the original work I'm doing. Working now on a demo release for 2015 and starting to do arrangements to follow in the studio. It's great to be back!

I'm soon in the market for another computer. So far all I've ever used is the PC and have been recording on cubase with some marginal success. Lately I've considered getting a Mac and using the Garageband software. With this post I'm hoping just to get some opinions, suggestions, warnings, etc. about either. Just feedback I suppose.
Much appreciated.

Hi all, I've been out of contact for a while now but have just started a contract away from home so I expect I'll have some writing time on my hands. Looking forward to getting back into the forum.

Thank you all for your advice and comments! Now all that's left is the final decision and purchase. I'll do a little more soul searching and shopping around then soon I'll be posting some new material I hope!

Seriousfun,

Further to this post, what would be the computer requirements for the Alesis Multimix?

thanks Geo, Lukey and serious! I'm getting excited now. I've got a few bucks saved over the last year or so and have been toying with buying a new instrument, or a mac or something...I think I may invest in a new PC (the mac is just too cost prohibitive to me) and an AI. these suggestions and comments are exactly what I'm looking for...testimonial from people who already have these items.

Thanks LUKEy! Looks like I've got about six months of reading to do!

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone can recomend recording interfaces for my particular setup. I've read a lot of things already written here in this forum and so it seems like a great place to inquire. A few of you have already offered up your comments and for that I thank you.

I've got a laptop with USB ports and am running Cubase SE. I play guitars mostly (acoustic, electric and bass) but also have a drum kit (Ludwig) and several miscellaneous instruments (mandolin, violin, harmonica, Spinette, other 'noisemakers'). my mics are a shure SM57 & SM58.

As I understand, there are interfaces I can get that allow me to plug in more than one mic or line in source at the one time? Thereby enabling me to record vocal and instruments at the same time rather than overdubbing. If this is the case I would be interested in something that could handle just me or myself and someone else jamming?

thanks!

Hey Chordies!

It's been a while since I've posted so I hope this finds you all well. I've been busy with a novel writing challenge (www.nanowrimo.com), Christmas and so on. I have been playing and writing also. That's what this post is about.
February is RPM Challenge month. I've done it two years already and this will be no.3! There's some really great music being made and a fantastic assortment in the Jukebox. I've been lurking and reading when not posting and know that this group here are a very talented crowd so I'd like to throw down the gauntlet and say the 'Challenge' is on! Let's see Chordie take on RPM!
Check it out at www.rpmchallenge.com and check out my stuff (the bar is not set very high!) under band name 'Alive Underground'.
If I can manage I'm sure all the really good people here could excell!

thanks Guys! That's more than I imagined! I met a fellow last week who has a home studio here in St. John's NL, canada who showed me his cables as being optics...I thought it was the whole set up but perhaps it's only some of his equipment. I'll see if I can find out some more about this and let y'all know.

I'm familiar with USB...firewire is faster and can transfer data both directions...also enables peer to peer hookup, but whats the fibre optics option for recording gear?

thanks.

Thanks very much for this Russell. I'll have a look and see where it takes me! Much appreciated!

Hi y'all,
I've read through all the posts here about the equipment and although facinating they don't completely cover my situation. Here's hoping I'm articulate enough to ask the right questions!

I am wanting to record a variety of instruments, both electric and acoustic, including drums and a range of music from folk to my teenage son's garage band. I'm looking for suggestions on what computer setup to go with (PC or Mac I've not used Mac before) and what software to use. Right now I'm using Cubase SE which I don't find friendly at all! I'm not a recording engineer, just a hobby guy.

I also would like suggestions on hardware such as mixers to computer and studio monitors (that could be used as a PA if possible).

thanks wery much.

Check it out! I've uploaded some music to the rpmchallenge site. All original material. Let me know what you think.

Oh, and remember, I'm no Paul McCartney!LOL.

thanks old Doll,

you've commented on my stuff in the past as well. I appreciate that. Actually in performing this piece I have the lyrics changed a bit...this verse runs like this now:

"...I cannot be someone,
for somebody else.
I'll try in my lifetime to be true and to be kind.
and I'll walk through the forest,
Full of hope and be so blind."

there's changes in the first verses also but like Zep sez ...the song remains the same.

This is a new forum to me (it's been a while since I've posted...long story). A good idea though because lots of great ideas die in the scribble stages so this is a good place for them to be kept.

here's one I've just about finished. I may have posted a version some time ago but I'm not sure. If so, sorry about that.

Outside Looking In

I’m on the outside looking in.
I’ve been watching the wind.
I’ve been down on the beaches.
I’ll go there again.
In wondrous amazement I look to the sky,
At the stars up above me,
Questioning ‘why’?

What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
But do you believe in Heaven Above?
I believe in love.

I’m on the outside looking in.
I’ve been talking to friends.
Not one here among us,
Knows where I’ve been.
In my mind in the morning, and the deep, darkest night.
Drinking in creation,
Until the sweet By and By.

What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
But do you believe in Heaven Above?
I believe in love.

I’m on the outside looking in.
I must be myself.
No good to be someone,
For somebody else.
I’ll try in my lifetime to be true and kind.
Walking through the forest,
Hopeful and blind.

What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
But do you believe in Heaven Above?
I believe in love.

Hey all, It's been a while since a post but I've been busy. I did an album for the RPM challenge and now it's all done for this year. It was a great experience (having never done this before) and it's energized me for more songwriting. My Mrs. and I were at a listening party Saturday night which brought together the locals who also entered the challenge...cool mix of young and old, folk and thrash; all celebrating music.

you can check out my stuff at rpmchallenge.com and click the jukebox 08 (upper right) and search 'Alive Underground' ...that would be me.  Also check out thescope.ca for coverage from sponsors in St. John's. They did a Sgt. Pepper-like cover of the group of us and some smaller group shots. I was listed as a lone rider (recorded alone) story teller, which is cool because I believe a song should tell a story...for my tastes.
