That was a lovely story old doll! Don't think I'll be taking any guiness along to my gig though, I don't charge for old folks homes, and it'd cost me a fortune! I know how much some of these old folk can drink. lol
Roger, not sure what to say to that! lol. Just try and concentrate your memories on the 3 happy ones.

Re: The best Acoustic? (59 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I can really recommend the 'TURNER' electro acoustic, with a proper acoustic amp. It's as good, if not better than the 'TAKAMINE' (I have played both) only your not paying for the name. The 'turner' doesn't look anything special, but it is built in the same way as a £3,000 guitar, in the same factory, and the sound quality is second to none being light weight as well. mine cost £1,000 new.
Basically they have built it with sound quality in mind rather than fancy markings, it is built with yew, ash, and mahogany. When your past the beginner stage, and can justify spending a bit more, then you could do a lot worse than the 'turner'.

Re: how and when do you decide to change guitar strings (4 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I play about 3 hours a day, and found I have to replace my strings about once every 4-5 weeks to keep the sound quality. I think it depends on your ear, how long you play on them, and the quality of the strings, and if you clean them regular to how often they will need changing.
I have found that if you buy good quality strings like the 'ELIXIR' they will last three times as long, i.e. you only have to change them once every three months, rather than one month for the same amount of playing. they are super fine too, I can really recommend these stings, you get a good quality sound, well that combined with my 'Turner' electro acoustic I have just got which is really sweet!

Re: Slide (3 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I was going to put a thread up about this. I was just wondering why pro players go up and down the fret board? I'm no stranger to playing myself, I have loads of songs I know, but only use the same top 4 frets, apart from a couple where I put the capo on 6 & 4.
Am I missing something here? i.e. what can you play by going up and down the frets that you can't on the normal first 4 frets that most people play, and what advantage is there to slide playing? sorry if it sounds a stupid question, but I'm self taught, and never had any pro teaching.

Hey Bo Diddley,
My first guitar was a Crafter elec/acoustic, about the same price, same problem, it's crap.2nd was a Takamine, it's good, very good.
3rd was a Breedlove, why do other makers bother?
If they won't take it back then I will challenge my Crafter against yours in a how far can you chuck it competition or lets see if the bastard can float across the Channel competition.
Try the Tak, playing is a dream compared to that Crafter.
I might just take you up on that charlotte. He has offered me £200 back for it, It means losing a bit of money, but think I'll take him up on it, as it really is pants, and no way I can play it at gigs.

Thaks guys. looks like i'll take it back to get them to sort it. Or I might trade it in for a good Takamine.

I have a 'crafter' electro acoustic, It was second hand when I bought it a few of months ago, but looked in good knick apart from a little ding in the side that hardly notices which the shop knocked off £50 for. I ended up paying £349 for it. I noticed when I got it home the'B' And 'E' strings were a bit rusty so i replaced them. I played it for about 4 hours a day, and have changed the strings again. But sinse I've had it, I've noticed a buzz on the strings especially when the capo is used on the first fret, not so much on the second.
It's not the way I play because I also have a 'faith' acoustic that I bought new that doesn't do this. It does seem to get slightly better as the strings age, and dull, but it by know means disappears completely. I did get an engineer that the shop employs to lower the bridge, as it was set a bit high in the factory, but this hasn't made much difference. If I really put my fret fingers down hard, it does stop it somewhat, but even with well calloused fingers, they get sore after a while. this surely cannot be right? Could it be worn frets? if so, how can I tell by looking at it, as I'm not that experienced in the mechanics of a guitar.

My music teacher has given me a song that I like, but it hasn't got any guitar chords on it. I can't figure out how to get it on the songs list, as it hasn't got an artist as such. I have the name of the song which is 'she's like the swallow', the rest of the info I have is it's a newfoundland folk song, from the 'oxford choral songs'. Can anyone help?

Re: Where to start gigging. (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
English pubs in Spain tend to play disco hits and karaoke. Look out for pubs with singers or open mike nights and folk clubs. Make sure you have some solid gold crowd pleasers handy as pubs can be demanding.
Thanks for that. More good ideas. I've just got one gig for my daughters local bownies! Good place to start.

Re: different kinds of guitars (3 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Don't want to hijack your thread, but I've been offered a choice of two guitars to buy off someone. one is a 'faith', and the other is an 'epiphone', the latter being a bit dearer, what does anyone think is the best buy?

Thanks for that! I never thought of art gallery's/fairs. It's the right time of the year for it too. At the moment I play when I go to classic Volkswagen venues,(hence the avatar) they seem to like it there, but want to branch out to other places.

Re: Good Beginner Songs (19 replies, posted in Acoustic)
If you like folk. then 'Down in the valley' is one good one to start with, especially if you have a reasonable singing voice. 'The times they are a changin' by bob dillan. I can recommend 'the complete guitar player' book by russ shipton. This has loads of real easy songs in it, with chords on them. it's a must for beginners!

I've been playing acoustic guitar for some months now, after a long break. I also have singing lessons. My singing teacher now says I'm good enough to start gigging. What's the best place for novices to start? pubs maybe? I play mostly folk music, nothing heavy, am pretty good apparently at it too. so just wondering who would appreciate this type of music the most? preferably somewhere that will pay expenses at least.
Also anyone know if English pubs in spain would go for this type of thing?

Hi everyone.
I'm new to this site, This is my first post. I've been playing acoustic guitar now for a few months. I'm looking for links to sites that I can download chords to ALL the verses of the songs. most only give you the chorus and one or two verses. Like 'American pie' for example. Another one I'm looking for is the full chorded lyrics to 'down in the valley'. Any help would be much appreciated!
Steve.
