As a relative novce (been playing 3 years) I enjoy practicing scales (I know that may seem weird but there you go). Physically am getting quicker in going up and down the fretboard using different patterns etc....however I aint sure exactly what to do next... I get a sense of acheivement in remembering the scales but feel as if I should be moving on from just going up and down the fretboard..any ideas, tips, suggestions ?

My apologies.... I never meant to cause offence...it wont happen again..please forgive me...I will endeavour not to transgress in this was ever again.

As a relative beginner, started 3 years ago, I just wondered how many out there take part in open mic nights..theres a few of us who go along to Burnham on sea.. Ritz acoustic club (www.ritzacoustic.com) once a month..the audience are very receptive to "novices" and getting up and havin a go is encouraged.
Brown eyed girl was my first, 3 years ago, I and I and played it at an open mic last night... great fun
Thanks for the info jay....I will give the sites a shot..

Hi
I am interested in gettinga pick up for my acoustic...and I was under the impression that it was a straightforward task to fit one of these ...is this the case or is it a job that needs to be done at a guitar shop..?
I was under the impression that you just had to "clip it on" around the sound hole plug yer jack in and off you go ....
Thanks for any advice,
Tommo
Hi welcome2myhead,
If you find a site that suits you go there and speak to yer mates.... cos you aint got any on this site.
By the way...your first name isnt Dick, not welcome2my, by any chance is it ?
Gotta ask what went on mustve been summat pretty bad to get a ban !!

Hiya Joe
I aint seen Justins site but I have been experimenting with the palm mutin thing and find it very addictive.
Select a straightforward song you are familiar with and just use the basic down down down down strumming pattern
but on the 3rd beat hit the strings with your plectrum as usual but at the same time hit the strings with
the fleshy bit under yer thumb...persevre it begins to sound almost like a drum beat
bottom line is though keep practicin...boring I know but thats the only way..
A mate of mine (whos plays professionally uses this technique all the time but he has developed it so much when you watch him play you hardly notice his hand position changing and he dampens on the 2 and 4 beats..
Cheers

Hi are you taking lessons ? I got into a local college which did group lessons which was very good value. It is also a way to meet other guitarists....which is a great way to learn.
Best advice I ever had was not to worry too much about how it sounds...that does seem a bit weird but what he meant was that with practice those chords will become clearer...just keep at it...and dont worry too much about how it sounds...see yeah
Sorry mate but hes correct.. just keep practicin....the best tip I have ever had regarding this was "dont worry too much about how it sounds"...I know that seems odd but it works, so long as you are aware of where your fingers should be, pick a song with the tricky chords in it and keep at it, and don’t worry too much about how it sounds you will slowly improve..
I am a bit weird when it comes to this I think... I actually enjoy practicin scales....
Anyway I dont quite know what to do other than just go up and down the fretboard playin em....any thoughts ?
Thanks for any gen....
Pick one or 2 tunes which you like that have barre chords in and just play em....the most importand thing is not to worry what it sounds like, but make sure you are aware of the position for each chord, and just play em as a warm up for your regular practise session you will start to improve so long as you keep at it.
How about.....Nempnet Thrubwell.....its the name of a village in Somerset UK
Practice...

Impossible to answer cos its all about opinions......like life...but for me "Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes" take some beating
Agree with everything said but one thing I would say is do not worry too much about how it sounds so long as you are striving to get yer fingers in the correct position the buzzing etc will become less and less noticeable.
Over and over Over and over Over and over Over and over Over and over again.
Thanks for all the advice the fact that others feel the same way makes me feel a lot better.
By the way Tracey Chapmans "Baby Can I hold You" is one that even I can sound not too bad singing.

Now I know the answer to this is obviousy no, but I cannot sing too well and it is frustrating not being able to sing (in tune) along when I play...be intrested to hear what others opinions are..
try putting yer surnam or a mixture of your (the bands) names into
www.anagramgenius.com and see wot comes up.
Easier to pick up and play the acoustic when you only ave a few minutes to spare...
Best to have both if possible though...............
Play with other people if at all possible, that was the best advice I have ever been given and I have never looked back.
Practice EVERY day even if its for 5 minutes, dont miss a day.
