I also play from the heart - music is a means to express emotion, passion, humor, and joy.  The technical stuff is only useful if it helps a player become more expressive.  I would much rather hear people playing & singing music with great gusto (and maybe a few flubs) than hear someone rattle off a technically perfect but expressionless notes.

I have heard players that are technically amazing, but musically boring.  They seem only interested in dazzling other musicians with their technical prowess.  A friend refers to this kind of playing as "talent attacks".  James

wow, that is some damn good use of words!! lol, but seriously you have stated something that is so true and you sum it up just perfectly. i think for a guitarist to be truely good at what they are doing that the feeling and the heart has to be present otherwise it is as you said, simply a "talent attack".

wow, as you can see from views your post has gotten a lot of attention yawgmoth! i think most new guitarists i know have experienced a problem pretty much like this, i found that i needed to press harder and place my fingers right begined the fret. oh and also i found that my strings were kind of coiled around the tuners, overlapping as they were wound around it. ive since fixed the prob and it produces a much better sound and stays in tune for longer.

well i personally think that the singer p!nk carries one hell of a voice! but i no that many people would dissagree with that but she puts on an awesome gig!

good question! honestly i dont think i am entirly sure... i think there must be a mix of a few things that inspired me to play, i guess that just seeing my fav bands play and seeing that they have gone out and made a name for themselves made me want to pick up the guitar in the first place and it really just helps me to stick at it. so i think it would be a mix of seeing them play at shows and also if it werent for my cousin chris, i probly wouldnt be playing now! so yer, mainly those two things inspired me to start playing and just inspire me in every day life too.

I have been playing for about 1 year or so now and i recently noticed that when using a pick i have a habit of resting my spare fingers on the body of my guitar, whether i am playing my acoustic or electric. i have been assured by some guitarists that this is perfectly fine and offers support to my hand, while others have told me to kick the awful habit.  I was wondering which one is correct??  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_confused.gif" border=0 alt="Confused">  millie
