anybody got any little tricks or routines picked up from their teachers when it comes to practicing barre chords. im completely useless after a long time practicing and think i need to review my whole practice session especially when it comes to the switching and changing barres in general. im self taught which doesnt help either. in fact any little routines that have caused mass inprovement to others would be greatly apreciated if anybodys got any

Re: B chord blues (13 replies, posted in Acoustic)
yeah i tried that. its difficult but at least possible unlike the normal way. seriously is it just me. anybody i know who plays says they dont have a problem at all. iv even heard of people barring B,G and D with one finger which to me seems just a physical impossibilty
Am i just missing something or is it, as my mother says,me just being 'special'

please please tell me if there any way i can cheat in playin a B chord (ie like the old 1123 play the bottom 4 strings for an f trick i learnt in my early days) as its like some elusive sound i will never hear at the moment and am missing out on some of my best tunes.
oh and pleas dont say practice cause no matter how many years of practice i cant these bloody fingers any longer. im almost at the stage of strapping weights on them while i sleep!!

as a beginner it means nothing to me yet are featuring in a few songs im attempting to play. any ideas tips and tricks on how to pull them off or even an explanation would be greaty appreciated. plus theres a few other things i could do with elightening on that i keep reading about mainly slides and what i believe are hammer ons. i fear i may sound an idiot but as a man without a tutor who is eager to learn this is my only source of info so any explanations on the technicalities would be great
and somebody please tell me if a bflat is even playable cause unless you have six fingers spread 2 inches wide each it seems like an urban guitar legend

to tell you the truth its mainly a lot of depressing crap by this regular american chap( sound bloke but can put an audience to slep in 10 mins) but the more people are there the better it sems to get. last night it was packed and there was a huge range of stuff from blues and jazz to the modern stuff like verve and razorlight even a bit of ocean colour scene which i thought theyd never heard of. the manager, like me is pretty new to the guitar but unlike me hes blody brilliant. i suppose some people just pick it up quickly. he mainly pumps out john lennon and other beatles classic but ive introduced him to the holloways and hes loving some of there stuff so maybe by the time i get back he'll be throwing them out. oh and his missus( whos french) makes a mean bowl of pho bo(noodle soup). guitars and pho bo. thats pretty much all you need for a good night

Re: Practicing without a guitar (19 replies, posted in Acoustic)
well been in thailand 2 weeks now and decided to opt for the find a music shop approach. im quiet similar i do seem to play with my ears and lets face without hearing yourself sounding better it just doesnt seem worthwhile. plus the fact im a terribly low budget(all donations accepted!!) its seemed the ideal solution
One problem. I cannot for the life of me find a music shop anyway. anyone whos ever been to bangkok knows how difficult to get around and the traffic is just a joke so if anybody knows of a music shop particulaly round the konn san area in will be much appreciated cause all i can find are tuk tuks and boom boom everywhere.as a last ditch approch im giving some homeless guy outside my guesthouse money to let me play on his. a couple of weeks and he,ll be richer then me !!!

Im glad its not just me thats finding this a tough question.i do like the shop idea. travel guitar i did think of. i even almost brought a little kids one the other day. my main problem is ( and i know this is a little self concious)im still learning and am not the greatest. in fact im borderline rubbish. And i do know from previous experiance travelling that anybody carrying any form of guitar is expected to bust out a campfire classics on demand. At the moment im just leaving the cringeworthy listenning to friends and family until i get better. there not allowed to make cruel comments about my f chord. I know this is a tough post. Thanks for all the ideas so far. any more please keep em coming
cheers again

im travelling round the world for 6 months soon and cant wait however due to the fact i will be on the move a lot im being forced to leaving the guitar at home. Im relatively new (bout 4 to 6 months) at it and i know that even if i miss a day of practice everything seems so much harder and my big dread is returning home and having to start all over again so im looking for any tips you guys have on keeping hand muscles strong (i know about the tennis ball theory) and keeping them hard worked calluses. also i want to practice chord changes aswell as they seem to suffer the most when im without her but cant think of how. any help would be greatly appreciated.

hey im very new to the game aswell and i know what you mean its all a bit overwhelming. advice i was given is just focuss on one thing at a time. ive been on chord changes for a while now and am staring to get better but i have one strumming pattern( down/down/up/down) stuck in my head and i know once ive mastered chord changes im going to have to work on getting that shifted and learning new patterns but im not going to even think about that yet until ive mastered these chord changes. im assusred that it will all come together in the end but i think patience is vital

great. just when i start telling myself grabbing is bad its now ok again. no one thing i have learned from other people and mainly this forum is that once you can play having an individual style of playing aint a bad thing as long as it sounds good. however, saying that ive progressed a heck of a lot since i stopped grabbing at it so my advice is avoid it at first. learn to play the conformist way and introduce it later. although i do feel i havnt practiced for ages thanks to any of my time being taken over by work and the mrs. any tips on that problem <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">

hi all. just started learning the marvellous guitar however do lack of time and funds im teaching myself and am getting through pretty well through sheer determination.however when praticing chords my thunb seems to wander off towards the top of the guitar orslip overthe top. ive watched other people play to try and answer this yet they all have different rules regarding the thumb. in general( and when practinsing basic chords E A d etc)where does my thumb go and how do i keep it there. plus any other practice tips would be much greatly appreciated.i seem to have hit a lull and really want get better.cheers guys
