The squeak is natural! You're bound to hear it live, or on natural-sounding recordings. Some producers really hate it, because they don't see it as "part of the music". For me, some songs just aren't the same without it.

The problem there is that Paul McCartney still freely admits that he can't fingerpick 'properly'. What you really ought to do, if you want to do some non-Beatles stuff, is learn to Travis pick- just Google that and there ought to be a few how-to's. Once you can do that and keep your time, you can start to experiment and make it sound much more modern.
