I had the same experience when I was trying to learn the guitar by using the chords I knew on the mandolin and applying it to the giutar. I was told I was cheating by not playing all the strings like most guitar players do. To me this was cool to find out how similar they are which helped me when watching others play I would be able to pick up their chords without actually knowing 100% what they were playing.
