Such an amazing talent ... great choice, Bill. A lot of modern versions of classic Christmas tunes range from horrible to extra-cheezie, but this is very classy.

I'll give Cordoba high marks for quality. The one I bought a few months ago has been hard to put down. Very well built, nice details, great sound, and plays beautifully.

Beamer ...
Your ultrasound course must be really engaging, if thinking up band names is where your mind wanders ... I've taken courses like that also (zzzzzzzzzzzzzz).
And as MKM says, I plug my acoustics through the pedal board all the time. The 12-string played with some flanger + reverb sounds awesome.
ZZ Top ... DragonBall Z ... Acoustic Z Impedance ... nice ring to it.

Topic: NEW HORIZONS (8 replies, posted in Poems)
On the news this morning, there was something about the "New Horizons" probe that recently flew past Pluto, followed right away by a new release on the growing problem of child poverty in North America. Seems to me that blowing $700,000,000 on a chance for a few photos of a distance chunk of ice, is an intolerable cruelty to those in need right here at home.
NEW HORIZONS
The photos are out and the rumours confirmed,
There's a new horizon waiting out yonder,
The reports are in and the info's returned,
Opportunities endless, too many to ponder.
CHORUS: The place? It's called Pluto.
The price? Not yet fixed.
The purpose?
None that I can see.
But there's no need for sunscreen,
And there's no neighbour's dog barking,
And it seems like a movie dream,
And there's lots of free parking.
CHORUS: The place? It's called Pluto.
The price? Not yet fixed.
The purpose?
None that I can see.
A new horizon, that's just 'round the bend,
Puttin' my eyes on a close-to-home chance,
To lift up the drooping heart of a friend,
And sub-zero Pluto? Not worth a glance.
CHORUS: The place? It's called Pluto.
The price? Not yet fixed.
The purpose?
None that I can see.
Seven hundred million, the cost of this probe,
While hungry children cry themselves to sleep,
There are new horizons right here on this globe,
If we just start to care … Pluto will keep.
CHORUS: The place? It's called Pluto.
The price? Not yet fixed.
The purpose?
None that I can see.

Every so often, a "dream team" group of musicians will combine their talents for a project like this, and produce compositions which are decidedly different than other works they've been involved with. Featured in LTE's concert are 4 of the very best at their respective instruments:
Guitar - John Petrucci (Dream Theatre, Explorers Club, G3, Nightmare Cinema, etc.)
Drums - Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre, Transatlantic, Neal Morse Band, OSI, Twisted Sister, etc.)
Bass - Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Stick Men, Upper Extremities, Alice Cooper, etc.)
Keys - Jordan Rudess (Dream Theatre, Dixie Dregs, David Bowie, Jupiter, Neal Morse, etc.)
The individual skill of each guy is incredible; and the whole is even greater than the sum of the parts. Enjoy!

I'd like to make a suggestion:
It's a long shot, but if one of us does manage to win this critter, I'd personally like to send it to our friend Bill Craig in Georgia. Personally, I've got all the guitars I need, and it would be consistent with the character of this great group here at Chordie to show Bill this small kindness. I sincerely hope as many Chordians who can will enter the Epiphone contest. The link is posted in TIGLJK's post above, and the deadline for ordering is (fittingly) Bill's birthday.

What a terrific photo of a lovely couple!
Bill ... it's been said before, but you have won our hearts with your kindness, thoughtful involvement in our forums, encouragement for other guitarists, all of it flavored with your own humility and charm.
Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday, and Happy New Year!

You're a brave man!

I agree, NELA. We have a few lakes around here that open for Ice Fishing on January 1st. The hope is that they won't be frozen over before then, so's I can dump the kayak in and go for it. Most of them have either / or Rainbow Trout, White Perch, or Chain Pickerel. The first two are delicious, but chain-sides (like a small pike) are disgustingly boney, and not worth the trouble. I love White Perch:

Wouldn't it be great if a Chordian won this thing? I hope everyone takes a few minutes to enter, as per the link posted by TIGLJK.
And don't under-estimate yourself, KIR, or over-estimate the guitar. It's probably a $1,000 guitar because it's an import. If it were a real Gibson, one would have to move that price by a full decimal space, would be my guess.

Re: Question for you (19 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I don't think I've ever given one a name, other than referred to them as the brand on the headstock. That would get confusing if I had as many guitars as JJJ. It would be like having 9 kids all named "George".

i always lusted after a rickenbacker like john lennon's, it was so disappointing when i tried one. i now fancy one like mark knopfler got made for him by an american luthier, he was so delighted by it that he wrote a song about him....only i cant remember his name...it's my age you know?
John Monteleone ... terrific story behind the beautiful song, and the beautiful guitar.

Well it looks like we've seen the last of Rush's best years. Health concerns have been especially plaguing drummer Neil Peart, as well as guitarist Alex Lifeson. Here's a very thorough report from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, just last Monday:

Thank goodness for YouTube. With a career spanning 4 decades, we can still continue to enjoy their music for years to come.
Thanks soooo much, Neil, Alex, and Geddy!

Re: Hollow-Body Tryout (9 replies, posted in Electric)
Thanks ... I definitely need a bigger / deeper body to get a more full sound from it. I tried one of the low end Gretsch's ($1,000) and those black-top Filter-Tron pickups didn't really turn my crank. I fooled around with a few at the shop today, and it's narrowed down to these two:
1) Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin c/w P-90 pickups:
2) Epiphone ES-175 Premium c/w Gibson Classic '57 pickups
Both are around $1,000, and both sound / play terrific. Even though the P90's and the 57's are completely different pickup, they both sound very good. Gotta save some more dough first, but it'll likely be one of these two ... although I am leaning towards the Epiphone. Doing tryouts / comparisons is half the fun of getting a new guitar!

Topic: Hollow-Body Tryout (9 replies, posted in Electric)
I've been eye-balling a pretty Ibanez AG95 hollow-body for a while, and decided to rent one for the weekend for a tryout:
This is smaller-bodied than the average jazz box, and also has a floating bridge which isn't pinned. And the sound quality aligned with these factors. It's very thin sounding, with a shallow bottom end and very little resonance. It also has a very low level of sustain, and required retuning several times. I'm taking it back today, and will have to keep searching, I guess. I'm thinking a bigger / deeper body with a centre-block, and the next tryout will likely be an Epiphone ES-175. They have a new version on the market, and it has genuine Gibson Classic '57 pickups in it ... here's hoping. I'd like to keep it under $1,000, so can't afford a Gretsch ... which would be my preference.
