Welcome to Chordie Highly Strung.
Keep practicing. Record yourself now if you can, then again in a month, and again in a month or so. Then when you get frustrated, you can see how fast you've improved. It's kind of like with kids. The parents see them and think, "Well, you've grown some." But relatives come along and haven't seen them in a long while and think "Holy Moses! Who is that GIANT with you?" You know your playing is getting better, but until you compare it to where you were it's hard to know just how much that 1/2 hour a day has done for you.
Good luck. Have fun. Join in.

VERY TRUE! I look back at some of my youtube videos and think... OH GOD that's so bad, I should take it down! But then I remember how long I had been playing at that point, and can SMILE at how far I've come (and the fact that I can realize how horrible it was, when at the time I was happy with it). Even if you don't put it online, just a simple recording with what ever you have, save it, and listen to it in a few months. You'll be sooooo happy and be able to really SEE what you've done!
example... a few months: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDY5fwcBMQM
a year and a half (yes, I hear that horrid squeek, but darn how the strumming and chord changes have come along, far bigger comfort levels): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmUPLnE2 … re=related
AND to not totally hijack this thread... ALL this improvement and talk of it IS exactly the kind of thing that has SAVED MY LIFE! JOEY... good thread!

another couple awesome ones guys... Selso, I hadn't thought of that one, but do know it! It's a GREAT one that would personally fit quite well. My Dad was the one that insisted we go to "church school" and make our communion as well. There's been a few times when he's said words that fit nearly to the tee to this chorus. Hmmm... big question, could I possibly sing a George Strait song... that is the question! LOL!

I actually have Gretchen Wilson's album (CD). I like all her songs, and they are ALL very redneck! "One Bud Wiser", "Skoal Ring", etc... She was a "poor bartender" turned superstar. A normal gal

Welcome to the forum Highly Strung! Stick with it... in 6 months you'll be AMAZED at where you're at! This is a GREAT group of people that are happy to chat it up, or help you out and there is NO stupid question. We were all newbies at some point (I'm just shy of 2 years playing myself )

Rhyme and unequal as it may be, the sentiment is beautiful in it's simplicity Phill. I can relate to those childhood memories, and being proud of a moment where we see our Dad proud of his child.

Re: A good "Daddy" song? (36 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Ok... so I haven't made any decisions yet, but I am leaning upon... Leader of the band, Daddy's hands, and Silver Haired Daddy of mine.
I believe my Dad sings Silver haired Daddy of mine and claims it as the song for his dad (my only grandparent that's still alive) so I'm not so sure if that's a good choice. He sings Ma ma Tried for his mother... when she was still alive, she would get such a HUGE proud smile on her face every time he'd sing that to her. (dang it now I'm welling up)
Jeff, I do remember before when someone brought up the song "Leader of the band" (it was probably you ) and I had printed it out because of the powerful lyrics that reminded me of being a good "Daddy song". One day my Dad saw it in my folder and commented on it, tried to play it, but didn't get very far through it. I have a feeling "Daddy's Hands" will be easier, but he may not know that song at all. So, I guess there I have it. Time to listen up and learn that song huh? Thanks again to everyone! I REALLY enjoyed listening to all of these!!

Topic: A good "Daddy" song? (36 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi all! My dad has some stuff going on with his health and I was thinking recently that I want to find a really good "daddy" song that I can learn that will help me work though my own emotions with it, as well as perhaps be able to play/sing for him. I haven't looked around a whole lot yet, but nothing seems to be popping into my head. "our song" is Desperado ... he loves Jim Croce (as do I), Simon and Garfunkle, Train songs (was an engineer on the Railroad), and all kinds of "guitar playing music" from the 50's, 60's, and early 70's. On his birthday this year he'll be turning 60. What kind of song exactly? I'm not sure, but something that would be like an Ode to Dad, maybe even upbeat, but not necessarily. Any ideas????

I wish I was an expert so I could follow along with the question... I'm not! Perhaps since we've had a little action here someone else will see this now and jump in. If you don't get a response in the next few days however, and you're still looking for a better answer than what you've figured out the music theory section might be a good place to attempt a repost. If you do, just mention it in here and I'll close this thread. Good luck NELA! I'm quite sure you know more than I do about this stuff!!

Re: Help making this song playable for me? (19 replies, posted in Song requests)
It's working great! Music theory.... so I'm playing it -5 which is G, Em, Am etc... capo on 2nd fret... So, my G is really an A, is this in the key of A now? (yes, this is as close as my feeble attempt at music theory gets). I'm seriously thinking I need to start figuring this out more so that at the least, when/if I ever play with my Dad I can tell him what key to play it in so I can sing along, )or at least we can be playing the same stuff (he doesn't use a capo but knows his notes/chords enough to change keys! Thanks!

Re: Help making this song playable for me? (19 replies, posted in Song requests)
dfoskey... I actually JUST did this before seeing your post. I didn't even try before because I "thought" as written would be the easiest I would find, but actually -5 semitones is easier for me. I can jump into that a lot easier! I am so thrilled to be able to continue to "cheat" my way though the guitar. LOL! I WILL be picking up a few different chords though in the process... never fear, I shall continue to learn at my snail pace On the other hand, this doesn't sound too bad without a few of the changes that I'm not familiar with since my voice can drown some of that out for now! Ha!

Re: Strumming Patterns with song books (21 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hey folks... this is a very old thread and likely some of the original posters aren't here any longer (haven't posted more than once and it was a while ago).
Anyhow... as for Chordie adding strum patterns to songs... it just doesn't work that way. Chordie doesn't host any of the songs here. Chordie is more of a search engine that indexes songs from other sites around the web and pulls the chordpro formatting to make it look all pretty for you and work with it by transposing etc. Sooooo, if the original author that posted this somewhere else on the web includes a strum pattern, great, if not, there's nothing much chordie can do. I have noticed that some songs have been commented on (scroll to the very bottom of the song) and people have included notes for strum patterns, or minor corrections here and there. Not all of them of course, but some.
If you have a song that you're dying to get a strum pattern for... you could always post in the "song requests" section asking for that help with a link to a recording of the song (perhaps on youtube) for another member to listen to and give you their suggestion on a strum pattern. We're all here learning together!!

Thank you guys for the inspiration and the "you can do it"! I will give it a few go's and see what I can do... I guess it will have to start out as a very SLOW ballad till I can get those changes down LOL! I have always loved this song... even when I was a little kid and had NO CLUE what it meant! Ha ha!

Hi Alex! Welcome to the forums! Please take a moment to read the stickies at the top of each section and familiarize yourself with the forums. I'm thrilled to see you jumping right in with a little info about yourself. For future reference you posted this in the "music theory" section and as an intro it would have been better in the Chat section. No worries, the mod in this section may move it for you.
I've been signing in front of people for as long as I can remember but I still need a few drinks to relax enough to do it... add the guitar and the worries about screwing up get even bigger, so I'm sure there's a lot of nerves in there. Play something you know well, VERY WELL, and bring the music along set out in front of you just in case! GOOD LUCK!!

I'm looking at Jim Croce's "Lover's Cross" and there's just tooooo many chords and changes for me. I have the basic chord shapes down, can't (don't want to?) play barre chords, and darn can't change that fast fluidly to save my life (unless I was just going back and forth between C and G! ha ha!)
Here's the song on Chordie: http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … 65187.html
Can anyone re-arrange this in a way that's a little more easily played by someone at my level? I think a bunch of you have a pretty good handle on what "my level" is so although I'm just making some assumptions here, I'm really hoping you can help me out! I LOVE a lot of his songs... I can't play any of them, but was hoping this might be a stepping stone. If there's not really a way to do it without losing everything that IS this song... I'll take a "no" almost as graciously as I'll take a "yes"!
Thanks!!!!

Hi Henry! I'm no good myself at figuring out songs, and if you've already searched everywhere online I can't do much for you. If you could post a link to a youtube video or something of the sorts for another member to listen to however, it's possible someone here with a little time on his/her hands could help you out!

Sox, if you're looking for Tears in Heaven, it can be found in the Chordie Index by simply searching from the artist page.
In the future, please create your own thread when looking for songs. Hijacking another's post by posting info/requests which are not on the topic at hand is not looked upon favorably. Thank you!
