Re: Thinking about a new Computer (30 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
As with everything else, my computer has slowed down after 3+ years of good service and I am thinking about a new one. In the past, when buying a computer, I never worried about the sound card. If it had one, good. Now that I enjoy recording and posting songs to YouTube, should I be looking for a computer with a better sound card than the average one that comes with cheap computers? Would a better sound card enhance my recording sessions at all? Would it be worth it to spend a few more dollars for one with a much better sound card? Or if I bought a separate sound card and installed it, what would I look for? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
My laptop is pushing 5 yrs and is still kicking,, Are you using your computer to store all your music vids,,ect?? How full is your C drive? Any computer who's memory is over 50% will have a noticeable slow down. Here is my suggestion:
1. Hey a new sound card would probably be a good thing. (if you really want one)
2. If your over 50% on the C drive, then buy a external drive and move all but the basic files from your c drive. 1 to 2 terra bite drives are pretty reasonable in price nowdays and gives you the ins. of if your puter crashes,, you dont loose all your files (Ii also store the program files for my adaucity, 30 + movies and my whole music collection, which take up a lot of space on my external also)
3. Have you ever run Ccleaner? (windows only) its a free program and really helps. then do a defrag. I like to use Defraggler (same company as Ccleaner) and its free also. Just look them up from file hippo or google, but the web sites take you either to filehippo or another download site.
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
http://www.piriform.com/defraggler
Im pretty sure you have a good anti virus /malware program so I wont go into my opinoins there.
This would be by far cheaper than a new puter and your speed will return.
Just my opinion.

Re: new usb mic. (12 replies, posted in Recording)
Thanks a lot for the help guys, Rodger you understood my post correctly, i did think i should get sound! that is the information i needed. I have since down loaded and installed Audacity, now, if i can figure out how to use it i think i will be allright. The mic does not have a switch Pete but, when i saw your post i had to look. Jerome your post was very helpful also, I'm just going to record for now, and if i decide to have live sound i will use one of my dynamic mics into my mixer. I hope someday to be able to help others as you guys are helping me, it is very very much appreciated. b
in audacity you will need to look in the box by the mic and make shure you have it selected correctly, along with your inputs for either stereo or mono http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/i … indows.png Have you read this? http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/ for how to set up and use? its worth the time to read it, helped me a lot. Not a hard program to bungle through. I have a Berhinger condensor mic run into my berhinger 8 channel mixer on the phantom power and into the sound card.
good luck and feel free to e-mail me if I can help more.
Beamer.

M.B. A fuzz peadle ca be picked up pretty cheep. and I will say,, if you dive into electric, hold on tight and love the ride. you can stay pretty and sweet or open up your dard and aggressive side. checkout the Crue version of helter skelter... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpk3llYo … ature=fvst and a good inexpensive pedal,, http://www.walmart.com/ip/17655963?adid … mp;veh=sem and you can go site to store on this. well made low price effects, or this and it has all the basics you need for great fun, and you can not beat the price. + you can use your acoustic with a sound hole pick up and the EQ and reverb will be boss! http://www.walmart.com/ip/Behringer-Ped … gMethod=rr

No pics yet, but its certainly a beauty! it has a classical style head stock. Taking it to a music store to find out exactly what model I have and its value (value to me is priceless) but I would like to know what its worth.

When I wrote my intro I told the story of my neighbor who played a Ovation 12 string. She had told me since I was a kid that one day when she could no longer play it I would inherit it. That day has come. She can no longer fret the 12 and said that If I could make it to WV It was mine. The closest I can get will be NC this week. She agreed that my oldest brother could come to town and pick it up. (its only a 2.5 hour drive for him from Columbus Ohio) and he is coming to NC to see me and his niece and nephews. So by Sunday I will be holding it in my hands, barring she didn't change her mind.
I will post a picture as soon as I can. I am also betting on having to do a good cleaning of case and frets, new strings and such. Ill be taking it to the music store I bought my first 4 guitars from to get it checked out and to see exactly what I have. I cant wait to play it!

Re: improving vocals? (13 replies, posted in Recording)
You can get a good Mic for 25 bucks from Behringer. Here is a related thread
http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=20040
Lots of good info in this thread.
As for recording yourself to the computer,, you don't need expensive software.
you can use Reaper trial version for free and it does not expire (info thanks to Jerome Oneil) http://www.reaper.fm/download.php and the guide is a PDF right under the download link.
or Audacity (its easier to use and pretty good for what you want to do and its free also)
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
and a thread for that http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=18944
You just plug your Mic right into the sound card, or you can spend bigger dollars on a USB mic
Hope that helps

Re: Lacking enthusiasm for playing (16 replies, posted in Electric)
What time zone / Local are you in? Join the skype jams. It will make playing fun for you again. The one weekend I was able to meet up with 2 other people, I realized that my insecurity of my voice not being good or that my playing was not that great, flew out the window!!
I go through wanting to get rid of all my stuff every so often. I just sit it down for a while.
Don't worry about it. Have fun with it, and the best way is to find someone who helps you to have fun by playing with you, not over you. This is a very hard thing to find (till I came here).
trust me, and it gets frustrating! Ill bet you have met a few guys but they play great and don't want to help you along other than saying " you need a metronome" or practice more. or they just want to show you all the riffs they know. I meet kids who outplay me all the time.(I have been playing since HS and im 44). I just keep doing what makes me happy and screw the rest of them if they don't see the joy and fun I get out of it.
KEEP PLAYING. Do not try to be a guitar hero, just play.

Re: What are the best strings? (31 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Bun, J3 may not like the GHS, but the boomers have been my Go to string for ever. I have used 9s and 10s. Acoustic,,, Diadairo is usually the winner and the 11s. I have used EB also for both types. I also hated a set from Musicians friend, sorta like the Rounds J3 mentioned. they were a musicians special or something similar. total crap.
