What a great idea! Even though bald eagles are plentiful in these parts, it never gets old seeing them. Majestic creatures!

I like BlueJeep's suggestion ... especially if you were thinking of traveling with a high-end guitar. Most of us will be familiar with Dave Carroll's experience, and the song he wrote about it:

This really good, Beamer ... thanks for posting. I never realized how much Myles Kennedy sounds like Bruce Springsteen. Slash's chops on any kind of guitar are impressive indeed!

Topic: Weekly Features (21 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
BadEye started his "Friday Blues Fix" several years ago, and has treated us to several hundred rare treasures. This inspired me to start the weekly "Prog Rock Chill Out" each Saturday morning, and Strummerboy Bill has added further flavor with his highly enjoyable "Monday Morning Classics". This has me thinking that there's 4 more days of the week, that 4 other Chordians could adopt for another weekly selection. A few suggestions might be:
Sunday: Spiritual / Relaxing Instrumentals
Tuesday: Country & Bluegrass
Wednesday: Folk
Thursday: Rock & Roll
It would be very cool to have a new selection for each day of the week, to give a good excuse for a second cup o' coffee each morning. Any takers?

First class choice, Bill ... many thanks! I had their first CD "Neck and Neck" (1990) when it came out, and played it to death. On one of the tracks, Mark & Chet are trading licks and chatting, and Chet makes this comment:
"You're pretty good, but you're no Mark Knopfler."
Excellent find ... didn't know they'd done this live.

Re: Fishing Season - Six Weeks! (40 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
NELA, I can't tell you how jealous I am that your climate allows you to phish year 'round! Our seasons are completely closed for 5 months of the year (October thru March) to allow our main species (trout & salmon) to go about their spawning & migration rituals unmolested. On top of that, our water temps drop so low that the rest of the lake dwelling species just hunker down for the winter, in a hibernation state. There's a few ice fishing species available during the winter months (white & yellow perch, stocked rainbow trout, smelts, etc.) but the ice is dodgy most of the winter, so it's not always safe. The few times I've gone ice fishing, I got bored quite quickly, even though a few fish were caught. Sitting on a stool and dangling through an 8" hole in the ice while trying to keep warm just isn't my cup o' tea. Keep on them Crappie, NELA!

This one's from the 1973 album "Selling England by the Pound". The end features an extended guitar solo by Hackett, where he again demonstrates the unique features of his Fernandes guitar's sustainer system. He really makes it sing ... enjoy!

I'd never heard of Willie, Badeye, so looked him in Wikipedia. It says he passed away in 1953, which would make this recording very old. Thanks for digging it out for us!

Topic: Fishing Season - Six Weeks! (40 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Here in Nova Scotia, our sport-fishing season starts on April 1st ... just 6 weeks away. We've had unseasonably mild weather this winter, and there should be lots of open water (ice free) by then. So guess who's excited? The rituals of tying flies, cleaning gear, checking waders for leaks, etc. is in full swing, and my fishing buddies and I are constantly trading emails and texts about planned trips this Spring. My favorite species to target are trout (speckles & browns) and smallmouth bass, but we also go for shad, striped bass, white perch, and of course Atlantic salmon. There's nothing like hooking into a nice fish ... the tug is the drug, as Dad used to say!
I know there's several other anglers on Chordie (NELA, Zurf, etc). What kinds of pre-season rituals do you go through? What are the seasons, favorite species, etc. in your area?

Re: Finger style (27 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I spent a year trying to learn fingerstyle without much success. Then I realized that although I'm an intermediate guitarist, I am a beginner at fingerstyle. I bought a course called "Anyone can play Fingerstyle Guitar" from Melbay and within 2 weeks I was getting it. That was about 5 years ago and now the majority of what I play is fingerstyle. It opens up a whole new world of guitar playing.
Hi Reverb ... thanks for the very helpful advice. I ordered the Mel Bay DVD course that you recommended and endorsed, and am looking forward to "expanding the horizons" so to speak. Much obliged for your help and encouragement!

Re: Multi-Scale Guitars (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Just for a bit more perspective, here's an explanation and demonstration (following video) of a multi-scale guitar by virtuoso Andy McKee. The broken string gave the opportunity to talk about it, while he replaced a broken string on the fly. Multi-scales are commonly used by finger-stylists Don Ross, Spencer Elliott, Pierre Bensusan, Antoine Dufour ... to name only a few:

I'm lazy. I don't intend to stop playing a standard guitar, but am intrigued by the DADGAD tuning, which a multi-scale is much better suited for. Instead of tuning and re-tuning, I'd like to have a guitar set up for DADGAD so I can pick it up, practice, and put down when frustrated. It'll be a challenge, but for me that's a part of the musical journey that makes it so absorbing.

That's great info, Doug ... many thanks! Don't know if I'll run right and get one, but it's all good to know. I can't recall ever seeing one at a shop, so it's difficult to try one out. RONDO sells one for $400, and that may be the only way ... but it would be an expensive trial if it didn't work out:

Temperature swing!!!
It's -15C here right now (+7F) and supposed to swing to +10C (+50F) by this time tomorrow. Nova Scotia juts into the Atlantic where the Gulf Stream passes just offshore from us, and when the wind direction changes, wild temp swings occur. The vinyl siding will be popping and clicking as it expands, but it'll give a chance to get the driveway down to bare pavement again.

Topic: Multi-Scale Guitars (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
As I've been watching a lot of fingerstyle guitarists and tutorials in recent weeks, I've noticed that a number of them use multi-scale guitars. This is most common with those using DADGAD tunings, or other such lower pitched alternate tunings. The claims are that multi-scales are more ergonomic / comfortable, offer exact intonation on every string, and produce better sounding low-tuned strings due to higher tension levels:
They're sometimes referred to as "fan fret guitars", which is really just a visual description. The more common scale length seems to be 27" > 25", but there are also more extreme variations. I'm wondering if anyone on Chordie owns / plays one, and what's thought of them?

Very cool rig! I like the idea of having a "looper" type of device right at a person's fingertips. And since Fishman is known for consistently top-quality electronics, I doubt they'd have gone to market without making sure it worked first. Intriguing indeed!

Haven't had any GG in the mix for a while, so here's another bit of an oddity from their album "Free Hand". These guys are all mutli-talented and extremely competent with the various instruments they play. They were certainly pushing the creative envelope in the 70's, even for a Prog band. The album cover featured a cameo appearance by "Thing" from the Addam's Family ... or at least it looks a lot like he / she / it.

DAYLIGHT
Twitch in discomfort … roll over again
Bash the pillow, tug the blankets,
Been another long night
Here a fight, there a fright
The window starts glowing
At last … there's daylight.
Tough circumstance … a victim again,
Wrack my brain, chew my nails,
Been a bad patch lately
Here a fear, there a tear
The solution starts showing
At last … there's daylight.
The forest beckons … outside again
Smell the air, hear the voices
Been too long away
Here a bird, there a squirrel
Their joy over-flowing
At last … there's daylight.
