Some of my younger friends are are probably saying "Who???"

Or maybe not. I find our younger generation ("X"?) is a lot more hip to The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, etc. than we think. But many of us who were teens at the time of the "British Invasion" tend to forget about the DC5, who had a unique sound, using the saxophone freely, and as far as I know the guys all got along unlike The Beatles

Anyway, I've scoured the net, but am wondering if there might be an "unauthorized" biography out there somewhere? So can any of you recommend a source - maybe in the UK - I can investigate?

Thanks!

Bill

Hi, gitaardocphil!

It's an honor to meet you and my answer to your question would be my Takamine Jasmine accoustic-electric.

In 1990, I was forced to move back to the US from Germany (my home) because my work visa had run out and the company I worked for went bankrupt.

I had to start all over at 40 and all alone, so with the little bit of money I had left I put the Tak on lay-a-way and when I finally was able to get her out, she became my friend in that little one-room apartment I was able to afford.

She's no longer "electric" (her innards having come loose) but she's still my favorite of all my guitars.

Thanks for that very interesting question!

Just looking at that list up top, and noticing that many of those (some names I don't recognize) guitarists are British. Don't know what it is about you "Limeys" smile smile (< see the smileys?) but y'all tend to live longer than the rest of us for some reason. Example: Keef and Sir Paul just to name a couple.

That makes me think that those on the list will be with us for some time to come.

As for some names not on the list and who have gone on to join that rock band in the sky, add Danny Gatton to the list.

Sorry if I seem to be rambling. I've not had my meds yet. smile

Bill

Big PS: If there is (and I dearly hope so) a "Musician's Heaven" (would have said "Rock 'n Roll Heaven", but I don't want to exclude the other genres), who'd be in charge of placing which musician with which band or would it be a "rotation" kinda thing?

I'm not all that religious, preferring "Paschal's Wager" to any kind of organized religion, but it would sure be great to have Mr. Atkins teach me how to use that thumb. smile

Whatever you do, never jokingly refer to them as being a "tough" crowd. One of the bands I was in had a night like you describe, vic and our lead singer joked about them not dancing: "We do do requests, folks!" "Did someone die?" and just downhill from there until we finally had an empty room. During the break we told him, "Hey man, shut up with that crap!" (Not saying you're doing that, vic. It's just anecdotal.)

We never got asked back.

In another band I was in, we'd use a slow night to just play for ourselves. It wasn't obvious to the crowd, but maybe the singer wanted to try a different key, or the lead might wanna lay in some licks he'd been meaning to try. I know you're a solo act and for you it's different, but just play for yourself or try some friendly patter. So what if they don't seem to be listening? That's on them not you.

Got anything on YouTube? My buds here might be getting tired of me asking that, but I really wanna go and listen, so let me know and don't let those sucky nights get you down. We've all had them. smile

Couldn't find the effects "tree" Beamer. Your link took me to  some pedals, but I didn't see them all grouped where one could click and hear what they sound like. Could you help me out with this, please? Also, looking forward to your picture. smile

Thanks!

I have since moved my Jasmine in here (the office) and it's sitting to my right in its stand, ready to play, and I have done so.

--------------------------------

Since I wrote that, I put all four of my guitars (2 basses and 2 6 strings) in here with me, along with  2 amps (the LINE 6 and the Fender G-DEC.) I'll move the bar stool in here tomorrow and I'll be set for my lessons. I'll shoot y'all a couple of pics so you can see how crowded it is now that the "girls" are back here with me. The other three were missing Jasmine, so that's settled too. smile

But.... no more excuses for the short "wanna do it" span. Now it's not "wanna" it's "gonna". Got my 4th Jamplay lesson tomorrow. I'm starting from scratch and hopefully will unlearn some bad habits in the process. It will also give me the chance to actually sit and play comfortably along with my friend Peter Benson, who has some great stuff on YouTube.

Thanks

To me the informal conversation seems friendlier, and even entertaining.

I noticed that pretty much the first week I was here (this time), Doug. It isn't just the friendly-sounding names, but what those folks say and how they say it which makes this place so special. I think I described it as charismatic and giving one the wish he could sit on that porch you mention, drinking a favorite beer and listening to the crickets on a warm late Spring evening near a Louisiana Bayou.....

Thanks

Hoowee, proofed!!! smile You sound like Peter Wolf of J. Geils! smile

Reading about your favorite bands, singers etc., made me think of myself, so the fact you're 65 and like pretty much who/what I do, makes you fit right in, in my book anyway. I'm new here (this time) myself,  so I can't speak for anyone else, but like you, I am impressed with the camaraderie and charisma I found here. When I am here, I can picture myself sitting in some Chordie member's music room, having a beer and knocking out some tunes and laughing and playing up a storm. wink

I'll leave the rest of the welcome to our host "what's in charge" and will just say I'm glad you're here, have fun and get ready for some great fellowship, as you say.

All the best, proofed!

Okay, BGD, I'll be sure to do that and now I know why there's very little difference going from flat to sharp on the G. I should have suspected that when I just barely had to turn the peg to get it in tune. Action adjustment won't fix that bad boy, will it, BGD? smile Any idea what it might cost me?

I know I say it a lot, but I'm totally grateful for your help, my friend. You and everyone here have been terrific in the help department.  We don't live near each other, but if I did live near you, you'd never have to buy another drink for the rest of your life, BGD! smile

That goes for everyone else as well.

Joe,

Ah! The LAST thread. Okay, got it.

Today, I'm like the first caveman who ever saw a wheel.

"Damn", I'm saying to myself. "That can be used for something!" smile

Almost there, but just not quite "getting it".

I appreciate you folks putting up with me. smile

Thanks, zguitar (can I call you "Z"? It just sounds cool to me smile ). I think I'd better let someone who knows what he's doing handle it. When it comes to doing anything which involve the hands and fingers, I fly off the handle very easily. So to preserve what little sanity I have left, I'll take it to a fellow musician who runs a shop. smile

Thank you as well, BDG. I am very fortunate indeed to have joined a board that has so many caring folks on it. It's also why I like to answer asap. First of all, you were kind enough to take up your time, and second, if I let it go too long I will forget to answer and even what (and that) I asked. smile

So, Ahm-a thankin' Y'all!

Thanks, topdown for your help. I might have inadverdently and eventually stumbled upon it, but this way is much quicker. Thanks for taking the time to answer,:)

I have one more question: Is there a setting I am missing which allows me to reply without having to quote the person I'd like to reply to?

Sorry for the trouble, but I do appreciate each and every one here who helps this ol' Geezer! smile

Dear Doug

Would it be possible to add a feature called "My Recent Posts"? I guess I post so much that I can't remember in which topic area my post is in (This is a part of my problem: short-term memory loss) and I wind up searching them all.

It may be that this already exists and if so, could you point me there, please?

Thanks, Doug

Sorry it took a while, BDG, and I hope this is what you want, because I really don't want to go back to Photobucket today. I don't know if it's the user population, but the site is a spam whore, and locked up with me to the point where I yelled "GD" (the whole word), which got me me a slap upside the head. smile

Is there a better place for photos?

Anyway, hope you can see a good shot of the neck and head and THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your assistance!

Growing up in Villa Rica, GA, I was tasked with helping my bro with homework, feeding him and getting him ready for bed and stuff.

We lived in an ante-bellum house which had absolutely NO insulation, which meant that in Winter, one was apt to see ice forming on the walls. We had an old pot-bellied stove we fed wood to heat up the dining room and kitchen. The rest of the house had gas heaters in every room.

I used to get a kick out of scaring my little brother half to death by putting so much wood into the stove it would turn the outside of it red-hot. He'd start bawling and threaten to tell Mom and Dad. I just said "Yeah, yeah, yeah".  Kids didn't say "whatever" back then. smile

Anyway, it must have done some good because next Spring our Dad put in a gas heater there as well. smile

Our weather here is the same as it was yesterday, but we're expecting rain tonight and tomorrow with a nightime low of 28. The weather guy won't commit to snow.

Bill

I have two.

One is called a "Boss" Fuzz Tone, and one is a chorus pedal I had originally bought for my then accoustic/electric (now just accoustic) Tak Jasmine, so I know what those two do.

But what are a few for an old dweeb like me to have fun with? You don't have to go into detail and/or you can just point me to a site and/or book called "An Idiot's Guide To Effects Pedals". Just a primer and/or suggestions would be fine. Whatever's the least amount of trouble and/or effort on your part.

Thanks

ROCK AND/OR ROLL!! wink

Is there such a thing as an action which can't be adjusted? I am enclosing a link to my Galveston accoustic/electric bass. I have never had the action adjusted and its strings are hard to push down. As you can see, it doesn't have a thumbwheel, just its little white bridge. The bass only cost me $200.00 (made in Korea).

Can someone explain adjusting "action" to me and can it be done on this guitar?

Wow! A '46. Will he have to do any body work as well, joe? Guess, it's a "none of your business, Bill"-kind of question, but I'm dying to know its value.

About my repair shop guy? His attitude was showing when I first walked in and I should have taken that as a sign to get the hell out, but I'm a peaceful soul and thought that maybe he was having a bad day. After giving it some thought, joe, I wonder if he had anything at all to do with music and just "farmed" the work out?

One can usually tell when one's speaking to a fellow musician. I just missed the cues, I guess

Hope you're having a nice Sunday, my friend!
