Craziest contraption I ever saw ... and made mostly of wood, by the looks of things. It looks like a xylophone / glockenspiel, done the hard way.

With now only four weeks to go, I got fishin' fever somethin' fierce. I just went cover-to-cover through the latest issue of "Fly Fusion" magazine, and I honestly can't tell what a single article was about. I just did it to ward off the heebie-jeebies I'm having from excitement. As Dad used to say, "The tug is the drug!"

Congrats on your new RV, Dirty Ed! No matter how old we get, there's always a little boy / girl inside that needs to get out and play once in a while. Otherwise, just like real kids, they'll drive you nuts. Hope you both have lots of fun adventures together!

I agree with you KIR about Epiphone's product line. They're essentially Gibson products built in the Orient to lower labour costs. Some components aren't quite the same as Gibson's but for an average Joe like me they're first rate. I've had my Epiphone Les Paul for almost 3 years, and although I've tried a number of them I haven't played a Gibson that I like any better.

Here's what Epiphone is offering for their March promotional draw, a very nice Limited Edition EJ-160E acoustic. I think it should belong to a Chordian:

I'd be honored if you did, UJB ... and feel free to edit as needed to make the syllables work your melody. I changed a line in the last verse, to better reflect what I "on the sidewalk" feel for people like this. Many thanks!

Re: EIGHTY FLOORS (8 replies, posted in Poems)
this has to be one of the best poems i've seen in a very long time.
while i was reading i kept substituting "DOWN" for "BELOW" and on the last verse "HIGH" for "ABOVE". i hope you don't mind me making suggestions?
apart from that your use of words is fantastic.
Phill, I most certainly don't mind suggestions ... everything in life is a work in progress (like poetry) and where would any of us be without collaboration? What I had pictured for this was a wealthy executive looking out the glass windows of his 80th floor office, at the masses on the sidewalks down below, and them looking back up at him in the 4th verse. Either down/below or high/above would work. In my little brain, the words "down" and "high" suggest that everyone's inside the building, which is a slightly different perspective than what I saw when I wrote this.
Glad everyone liked it ... thanks for the kind words & suggestions! :-)

Most of us know that true wealth isn't measured in dollars & cents, and there are many sad examples of people who never learned that essential life lesson. I recently read of two people quietly conversing during a wealthy man's funeral, when one of them asked a question of the other:
Question: "I wonder how much he left behind?"
Answer: "All of it."
EIGHTY FLOORS
Looks at those insects, 80 floors below …
He gloats with sociopathic pride.
He grunts and he growls and defiantly snorts,
There must be a tactic, there must be a way,
There must be an angle, to increase my pay,
From the pockets of those insects 80 floors below.
Look at those insects, 80 floors below …
He seethes with psychopathic hate.
He schemes and he plans and ambitiously snorts,
It's mine for the taking, they're just in the way,
It's my net worth, time to seize the day,
From the pettiness of those insects 80 floors below.
Look at those insects, 80 floors below …
He frowns with germophobic dread.
He hides and he cowers and fearfully snorts,
I can't go outside, I can't have a friend,
I might catch something, I'm alone till the end.
Horrified by those insects 80 floors below.
Look at that insect, 80 floors above …
They sigh with sympathetic calm.
All he worships has only made him blind,
He's not known love, he's not known joy,
I feel bad for him, he's truly quite poor,
So sad, so alone, 80 floors above.

Pink Floyd "Mother" London, 1990

Here's an oldie from PF's 1979 album "The Wall". This performance has a refreshing raw edge to it, and Gilmour's solo parts are penetrating. Roger's cynicism and anti-authority rhetoric continued to cascade, and there's so much hatred seething from this album, it's almost hard to listen to at times. The song has a few awkward time signatures (such as 5/8 and 9/8) which Nick Mason found hard to drum. The album version features session drummer Jeff Porcaro behind the kit, but Nick eventually got it all squared away for performance purposes. All said and done, it's still a brilliant musical achievement.

Hello Paco ... and a big Canadian welcome to Chordie!
Everyone learns at the their own pace, and as you practice your "finger memory" will start to become automatic ... it's that simple. There's always going to be a measure of frustration with what we can't do, as even the most advanced players will admit. That's what keeps "wind in the sails" and striving to improve a bit each week!
Some others have made several great song suggestions to work with, and you'll be making progress in no time. The regular participants here in the Forums are very supportive and non-competitive, and we'd all appreciate you taking an active part, and keeping us informed of your progress.

Whatever labels are used, it would be cool if there was a weekly music feature for each day of the week. Doug's comment reminds me of a standing joke about the Canada Revenue Agency (our version of the IRS). If you call them 3 times for a tax law interpretation, you'll get 5 opinions.

Re: Taylor or Martin or? (19 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I'm a firm believer that the name brand means a lot less than the quality of the guitar itself. Pretty well every brand makes guitars from entry-level to top-of-the-line, and are priced accordingly. Coming from a +30-year retail background, I know firsthand that the companies with the highest profiles, celebrity endorsements, extensive marketing campaigns, etc. simply must build those expenses into the cost of their product.
Great quality guitars are made by Takamine, Larrivee, Eastman, Guild, Norman, Seagull, Simon & Patrick, Yamaha, Cordoba, Epiphone, Sigma, etc., as well as by Gibson, Taylor, and Martin. My 12-string is a Takamine, which I like very much. Most of them also make lower priced guitars so they don't miss that market, so the brand-name sticker can't really be the criteria to base a purchase on.
Regardless of brand, an all-solid-wood guitar (no plywood) is going to give you that deep & rich tone you're looking for, much better than a plywood one. At the least, an all-solid-wood top with laminate sides & back will be a more economic second choice. That's how my Takamine is made, and although I like it, it is a bit "shallow in the deep end" if you get my meaning. Next to that, the guitar has to "fit" you in terms of size, neck shape / width, etc. Do a bit of self-education on guitar construction, find ones that are well-made, and then let your ears and hands do the talking. As UJB has already said, the Epiphone Masterworks are an all-solid-wood construction that are priced reasonably, as are the Yamaha "A" series.
Happy hunting!

Re: Fishing Season - Six Weeks! (40 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Read. I read, read, read, read, read. I read about streams. About boat ramps. I read about techniques. I read about how to present this fly or that lure. I read about paddling skills. I read about which rivers are polluted (a sad addition to the material). I read the regulations. I read magazines, books, fishing reports, solunar tables, and blogs. When I finally get to the water, I forget everything I read.

This sound way too familiar, Zurf! I also spend a lot of time on Google Earth looking for new places to try.
