Re: top line versus inexpensive labor ? (8 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hey now, hey now, that's what I call community service.
I really am fired up. Thanks for the insight into what your playing.
It has brought back my memories of the 70's when I was into that whole "California" acoustic/folky/blues scene. The product names are still the same. The prices have inflated just like surfboards.
In 1971 my "legendary"main man shaper's top line custom stick cost $170.00. Now a 10' longboard is $1000.00.
You people are my new best friends.I hate trying out new guitars becase the strings are always old and stiff. I can still get the general idea from the insrument if I spend enough time playing different models, .
I'll stop by the shop today. No Little League Games to announce.
Thanks again... T.C. Canterbury
Hi T.C. and welcome to Chordie. As a little league coach / dad, I'd like to thank you for your efforts in announcing. Volunteers like you allow us to pass this great game on to our kids.
Now, my 2 cents regarding your post - It is not at all unreasonable to request a new set of strings be installed on a guitar you are trying out. If you are looking to spend substantial dollars, make the store (and salesperson) earn your business - request / demand decent strings.

I see you're playing "Melissa" on the 12... How she treating you??
I'm still digging the Alvarez Pix - only downside is changing the strings on a 12 is....... twice the pain.
I really love my CA and since I travel so much, I've got my eye on one of these (newly introduced).
I've been going back and forth between the CA 12 and an electric - maybe a Taylor T5 as my next addition.

Check out "Cash Unearthed." It's a retrospective box set of his ten years with America records.

Thanks for the tip Zurf - I just ordered the box set from Amazon. The download is $30 cheaper, but then I couldn't read the liner notes!

Topic: What is Chickenfoot? (1 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
From Wiki:
Chickenfoot is the title for the supergroup featuring vocalist Sammy Hagar (ex-Van Halen), bassist Michael "Mikey" Anthony (also ex-Van Halen), guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Chad Smith (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers).[1] Chickenfoot are currently in the studio, working on a record that is set to be released around April 2009.
"The style is high-energy, kick-ass rock 'n' roll ... We all bring to the table some unusual influences and then we also share a lot of roots. And I think that's where a true color of a band comes out, just how we react to each other. So, it's definitely rock music. We haven't brought each other together to do a techno record... We'll draw from funk, blues and experimental. We know what we want to get out of it. We want passages in songs that develop and we want everyone's personality to be able to come out. So, it's going to be expansive but it's going to be rough." - Joe Satriani, guitarist Sammy Hagar has reportedly said that Chickenfoot could 'rival Led Zeppelin'. He said "When people hear the music, it's Led Zeppelin, I know that's a bold statement, but it's as good as that." He has also stated a comparison to Van Halen, the band of which he used to front as a vocalist. He said "It's ten times Van Halen, because it's functional - we all like each other."[3]

Topdown,
Loved Jimmy V, and you're right, it hasn't been the same without him, I even read his book he had out way back then, the name of the book escapes me right now, but I remember it was great reading.
Cam
The book was titled "Valvano: They Gave Me a Lifetime Contract, and Then They Declared Me Dead."
Your right - a great read and Jim was a great guy. Inspirational speaker, that's for sure. I think this was even better than his ESPY speach:

And this, I will never forget:

I always loved this quote:
"I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em..."

Frustrated NC State fan here. I was attending State when we won the National Championship in '83. Our basketball program hasn't recovered since Valvano got run out of town. Now I'm an ABC fan - Anybody But Carolina! Not a real big fan of your coach, but I must respect the Duke program. I remember the days when they weren't very competitive in the ACC.

LOL bensonp - I guess I wasn't clear - it's kind of a game. List your tune by artist in A to Z order. Next one would be "B".
Great tune though, I hadn't heard that in years.

Getting bored with my song book, need some new tunes. We did a few of these threads a while back with song title A-Z, so - a new twist. Post a song you play (with link if possible) A-Z by artist.
I'll start:
Allman Brothers - Melissa (on the 12) I play the version on the bottom of the page.

Next - a "B" artist

You probably have to change the file size to meet the criteria (that's what I had to do). It must not be any bigger than 60 x 60 pixels and 10240 bytes (10 KB).

Hi dogberry - the head admin computer guru is installing a major upgrade to the database. He is aware of this bug and I'm sure it will be corrected in short order. The artist sort seems to be functioning properly so in the meantime I suggest you use that.

We play Traditional and newer country, with Traditional and Gospel bluegrass mixed in at the local nursing home and some senior citizen centers in the area. We have a dobro, fiddle, banjo and doghouse bass with my guitar. All of us sing"try to". We probably don't sound as good as some, but the only ones having more fun than us are in the audience.
Ron :-)
That sounds like a ton of fun Ron. I see you are a relatively new member, so I'd like to offer a warm welcome to Chordie!

Re: Good Time Defenders (12 replies, posted in Songwriting)
unhuh - i really liked the song and appreciate the video. Great bluesey tune. Question - what kind of guitar are you paying?
I rarely visit the songwriting forum because I don't have enough imagination to hear how a song should sound by only reading the words / chords.
Suggestion for all who post on this forum - if there is a vid or audio file available for your song, post it in the thread title (i.e." "xyz song" with audio link). I know that I would view those threads every time.

Re: any fisherfolk out there? (29 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hey Zurf - Don't mean to take thread OT, but my next project looks to be taking place in Staunton, VA. Do you know the area? I believe Southpaw also at one time resided in the vicinity.
I love to fish this time of year, early Spring. Throw a minnow on a bobber (that my kind of fishin - one hand on the rod, one free for the beer), catch some crappie, maybe a largemouth. For me it's more about enjoying the sun and a few cold ones - catching fish is totally optional. I've been known to toss out a bare hook after the minnows run out.
Would be cool to join in on a campfire gathering if Staunton is in your area. The project is still a few months from kicking off. Likely late summer early fall before I'm on-site. Any info on the area would be appreciated!

Tomorrow, we are all Irish. Celebrate safely everyone!
A Texan walks into a pub in Ireland and clears his voice to the crowd of drinkers. He says, "I hear you Irish are a bunch of hard drinkers. I'll give $500 American dollars to anybody in here who can drink 10 pints of Guinness back-to-back."
The room is quiet, and no one takes up the Texan's offer. One man even leaves.
Thirty minutes later the same gentleman who left shows back up and taps the Texan on the shoulder. "Is your bet still good?" asks the Irishman.
The Texan says yes and asks the bartender to line up 10 pints of Guinness. Immediately the Irishman tears into all 10 of the pint glasses, drinking them all back-to-back.
The other pub patrons cheer as the Texan sits in amazement. The Texan gives the Irishman the $500 and says, "If ya don't mind me askin', where did you go for that 30 minutes you were gone?"
The Irishman replies, "Oh... I had to go to the pub down the street to see if I could do it first."
