Yep, predicted a 6AM earthquake in NZ, then across the time zones. No NZ quake yet, and nothing to report. Another whack-job bites the dust.

I have a Cort, semi-acoustic, 3/4 sized, with a cutaway body. Excellent acoustics, very sensitive pickups and very playable, and priced under 500.00. Cort makes some fantastic semi-acoustic guitars.

Is "bad" a key? If so, I got that one nailed.

My usual key, learning a new song, is "OFF".

I'm not sure this qualifies as a drinking song, but it gets sung a lot when the liquor has been flowing. "Cover of the Rolling Stone"
After 8 beers or so around a campfire, that song, and "Mama's Got a Squeeze Bos" get sung and played, loudly, and, well drunkenly. Do they qualify as drinking songs? Personally, I only do them when I'm nearly snoggered.

Whitewater55, were you referring to "Bottle of Wine Fruit of the Vine"?

Yes, indeedy, I was. It was a big hit in the late 60's or early 70's. Can't recall the band that recorded it, though.
I play it regularly on my pub nights.
"I Like Beer" is simply awesome, especially the sing-a-long chorus.

I am primarily a guitarist, although I dabble in Mandolin now and then. I got a Uke as a gift, and my wife, who is not an instrumentalist, expressed an interest in learning Uke to accompany me when I mess about.

Is there a tuning for uke that will allow for 1 finger/barre chording, to simplify playing major chords? It sounds like a really stupid question when I ask it, but I just now found a tuning guide/chord chart for uke, and I know that with standard tuning, my wife will be unable to learn it. We're both in our 60's with arthritis and all. Any help out there?

Thanks in advance.
Randy

A girl with no arms and no legs is sitting on a blanket on the beach. Summertime, with couples in love everywhere. She's a bit blue, though. She's 30 years old, with no arms or legs!

As she watches a couple kissing, she thinks to herself, "geez, I'm 30, and I've never been kissed by a man", only her thoughts are spoken aloud. A young man walking by hers her lament, bends down and tenderly kisses her lips, and walks away.

A few minutes later, she sees another couple, embracing on a blanket. She thinks to herself how she has never been held in a man's arms, and again, her thoughts come out of her mouth. Another young man, walking by, hears her, feels compassion, and tenderly lifts her into his arms and holds her close. He lays her back down and walks on.

Shortly afterward, she spies a real hunk walking by, and the wheels are turning! She fairly shouts: "I'm 30 years old with no arms and no legs, and I've never been screwed!" Mr. Beefcake hears her, of course.

He bends down, picks her up, sails her into the surf and yells: "Now you're screwed!"

The chord charts, listed with each song, show your finger placement for each chord.

A good place to begin, if you're just interested in strumming, is to learn the G, C and D chords. Just position your fingers according to the chord picture, and strum the chord until there is no buzzing sound, just nice, clean notes. It's gonna hurt like hell for a few days as your fingers learn to be bent into shapes they are unnacustomed to. Your fingertips will get sore, too.

Once you can make these three chords, practice changing from G to D and back, until you can do it without thinking. Then add in the C chord, and do the same. With these three chords, you can play a host of "simple" songs.

This is a good starting point, at least.

Good luck, and don't get discouraged, just keep at it. It will get easier in a few weeks time.

Welcome to Chordie Srpetty. If you are young and stick to learning the guitar someday
you will be saying: "Where the heck did all these guitars come from ?" Trust me it will
happen. Not saying it's a bad thing just sayin.

Fast fret. I used it many moons ago when first learning on acoustic as it it made the
strings kinda slippery or smooth. On fingers yet to be calloused well it can help ease
the pain somewhat. Not sure what kind of applicators are out there now. I'll bet there
are different brands also.  Best of luck,  Mike

Thanks for the welcome and the info, Mike.  As for time to acquire guitars, it depends on whether or not 46 is young.

That's young from my perspective!

Ya, Zurg, know what you mean. I own 5 guitars, a mandolin, 2 ukes and a host of percussion stuff, from Indian drums to tamborines, assorted stands, amps, tons of music books and music stands, mics, etc. etc and, of course etcetera!

My wife is very tolerant - have a room to house all of it.

Just bought an '80's Vantage 12 string for $100.00 ! I should say, my wife bought it for me, after a long search in Kijiji. The Vantage is a real solidly-built machine, compared to my broken Gianini 12-string, and its deeper body really resonates. Haven't had a 12-string for several years, and I didn't realize how much I missed that "wall of sound" when playing and singing. Anyone else own a Vantage? Japanese, no longer manufacturing, I think, but well made with a lovely matte finish, not too gaudy and stays in tune forever. Can't be beat for a hundred bucks!

A man walks into an ice-cream parlour, and orders a double-scoop chocolate cone.

The server says, "Sorry, we are out of chocolate, can I get you anything else?"

Man says, "Yes, give me a pint of chocolate ice cream, please."

Server says, "Sir, we are out of chocolate, would you like something else?"

Man thinks for a minute and says, "Give me a gallon of chocolate ice cream!"

Server asks, "Sir can you spell the van in vanilla?"

Guy says, "Sure, V A N"

Server:  "OK, can you spell the straw in strawberry?"

Man: "Sure, S T R A W"

Server: "Good, now, can you spell the frick in chocolate?"

Man: "There is no 'frick' in chocolate!"

Server: "That's what I've been frickin' telling ya!"

Does anyone know of a decent luthier in the Detroit/Southeast Michigan area?

My old Giannini 12-string cracked across the top, below the bridge. I know, it will be an expensive repair, but the guitar has enormous sentimental value to me, and I need a good luthier to probably replace the entire top.

Thanks all,
Randy

I predict Mubarak will step down on around day 20, which would be Valentine's Day, or thereabouts. He will be forced to step down. I think that the U.S. and E.U. will cut the flow of money to Mubarak's regime and freeze Egyptian assets on the 13th or so. This will force Mubarek out. Hopefully, the Egytian parliament will then name the Speaker as the interim president, as is written into their constitution, and the political games will begin for a September election in Egypt.

Unless, of course, in the next few days, the military simply decides to find a suitable staff officer and appoint him president in a coup. This, I think, is a low probabilty, but, the military IS the actual government. Mubarak is still in power because the military has yet to choose sides. They are the wild card in the mix.

I don't think that the Muslim Brotherhood is altogether to be feared by the west. Egypt is a secular country, and the vast majority of Egyptians prefer it that way. Anyway, interesting times indeed.

There is no way in hell that I would take a $1000.00 guitar on a canoe trip. There are 100,000 ways to wreck an expensive guitar, canoe camping. My personal favourite is a real el-cheapo, chinese made, 1/2 size classical-style acoustic. It plays well, has good bottom and if it gets broken on a trip, it's now a $25.00 bundle of kindling, and no tears shed.

The entire Arab world is in turmoil. The U.S. should be able to make some historic inroads into previously hostile countries, although it is a tricky situation. Mubarak should just leave, since the Egyptian constitution allows for peaceful transition via the "speaker of the house", who is supposed to become interim president until the next election cycle.

That being said, the guy (Mubarak), obviously doen't like "30 and out", and things will get much uglier there before they get better. Yemen is in the same boat, and the leaders in Syria and Jordan are shitting bricks right now, too. These are world-changing events unfolding, like the Jewish curse, we are living in "interesting" times.

I am having a devil of a time replicating (on guitar) CSNY's "Teach Your Children" - the tune I can sing, but the guitar work I can't quite match. I'll get it eventually.

Just finished learning "Don Quiote" (Lightfoot). Him and his damned capo 2nd fret!
