Here is another great site for you for strumming patterns and practice ... www.justinguitar.com
I learned strumming patterns from Justin in about 15-20 minutes and it was great

Happy playing!

Everyone else will echo this same advice ...  www.justinguitar.com ... everything and anything you need will be right there ... Justin is great with his instruction and I've utilized his site very much ... you can't go wrong; tabs, chords, scales, strumming patterns, songs, etc ... it's all there for you

I've tried the Epiphone Dot Deluxe Flametop Semi-Hollow (copy of Gibson ES335) and it sounded very good ... I had always been curious as to the sounds of a semi-hollow and decided to give it a try ... I went to GuitarCenter and plugged a Gibson ES335 it into a Marshall MG30DFX and was blown away by the sound ... not being able to afford a $2500+ price tag I tried out the Epiphone version ($449) and it sounded great ... mind you not as beautiful as the Gibson but it still sounded great ... my next guitar purchase will be that one ... the tones were wonderful and perfect for your U2, Cult type rock tones

I'd highly recommend it ... I'm not that big on the dot inlays since I prefer the Gibson Traps better but all-in-all, it sounds great

Alan

Yeah the Poconos are beautiful ... but best seasons are in the fall (October-November) ... the mountains and valleys are incredible and there are so many lakes and streams it's unreal

Texas isn't the same that's for sure!

That's one of my favorite shows to watch and that particular show in Scotland was great ... I didnt realize the weather was so dramatic up that far!  I never went up to Edinburgh for New Years like a lot of young military people did when I was stationed in England ... but every one of them said they had a blast up there

All these places in Ireland and Scotland makes me wish I still lived in England ... at least then it would have been cheap for me to take a road trip up north or hop on a plane and cross the pond to Ireland ... the pictures of the old homes and buildings reminds me of places in England that I visited

I have Irish roots on my fathers side and we traced them back to west/central Ireland if I remember correctly ... then again, my Dad also said we had roots in Scotland as well so who knows!

I'm glad I could bring back memories for everyone ... it's nice to go off the beaten path and reminisce smile

Here's a link from the Poconos in Pennsylvania if you'd like to take a look if you ever visit the U.S.

I play a lot of powerchord stuff ... so far the only thing I've been able to do with any conversion is changing open chords to powerchords ... for acoustic stuff it's rare that doing that type of switch works ... as for your minors, 7th's, etc. I haven't been able to convert those to powerchords

Aside from powerchords, I often use cheater chords when I can't barre something ... for example on an Iron Maiden song called Prodigal Son, the chord progression during one section goes like this:  A / B / C / B / E and then A / B / C/ B / D ... I do the A chord open then instead of doing a Barre B and C, I slide the open A formation down two frets (4th fret) and do the open B version then slide the same A pattern down one fret to the 5th fret for another open C ... technically it's a barre but I don't barre it ... it's still close enough in pitch that it works

When I can finally do barre chords on acoustic without it sounding like crap, I'll make the switch .. but in the mean time, you go with what works for you smile

Thanks Craig ... I wasn't sure in how effective they were ... I didn't know they came in effects processors either ... thanks for the heads up

Alvee - I remember going by the White Cliffs of Dover ... very pretty out that way ... I'm pretty sure I ventured over by Portsmouth, Great Yartmouth, Cambridge and Thetford ... I loved the atmosphere in Cambridge ... if I would have known they had a football club I would have went to a few matches

GP I agree ... growing up in the Pocono Mts. in PA was great ... and I miss it constantly

Ken ... have you ventured out into the Scottish Highlands where Bear Gryls did his show on Discovery Channel?  That place was wildd from what I saw ... such serious weather change!

I do want to visit Ireland one day ... when I get stationed in Germany in a few years I'll be sure to make the tripe

I agree SP ... NOTHING beats eating over an open flame in the wild ... I miss it ... eating an MRE over an open flame isnt the same!

Just curious since a lot of us are from different parts of the globe in the forum I was wondering what is everyone's favorite vacation/holiday spot they've been to?

For me, nothing beats going back home to Pennsylvania in the fall

Does anyone own a noise suppressor (like the Boss NS-2) or any other type of noise gate?  I just bought a Marshall MG30DFX and I noticed when I'm not playing, I get light feedback or hum.

How effective are they in reducing feedback noise?  With my Line6 amp I don't get any feedback or hum.

Thoughts?

www.justinguitar.com is a great site to learn from ... many of us here have utilized Justin's site ... he'll help you with strum patterns (it's how I learned) ... muting the strings just takes practice, you'll get there

Yeehaw

The majority of the time, I'll play the chord listed and not look at the suggested finger positioning ... sometimes people use what I call "hybrid" formations of certain chords ... play the chord that is listed and if it sounds right, go with it ... if it doesnt sound right, try the "hybrid" formation ... you can always use the chord chart here on Chordie to find different formations of the same chord

In regards to the 4 / 7 you see by chord formations, this tells you what fret to play the chord on

Let me know what you think ... I'm actually selling mine for $199 on Craigslist here in San Antonio ... I'm not playing as much metal as I thought and my Gibson Les Paul does well with Hard Rock tones

Hey Valor

If you're looking for a rock/metal sound, Schecter makes a VERY affordable and great sounding metal guitar ... the Omen 6 ($299)

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Schecter-Om … 1149925.gc

I've had this guitar for about a year now and it's great ... the only draw back I've seen so far is the headstock is a little heavy but other than that, you'd be VERY satisfied with it ... the pickups are Schecter brand humbuckers and they're pretty nice ... my suggestion is to swap them out later for EMG 81/89's

Good pick-up on Drivin' N' Cryin' Pix ... great song not many know about

Pix ... I've worked on these already ... they're good to go ... I figured different styles would be a good variety for the beginners

I speak from experience when it comes to the iPod ... I've owned 4+ iPods ... the reason?  The hard drive in them tends to crap out after a year or so ... I had a 60G / 30G / and 2 - 4Gs ... in all of them the hard drive went and the only way to get it fixed is to send it to Apple and have them repair it which is more than the iPod is worth ...

I've been meaning to try the Zune but my current iPod shuffle hasn't crapped out on me yet but WHEN it does, I'm going with the Zune next

Hi Naomi

I'm not sure if this is the answer your looking for but I'll try ... a lot of times when I'm doing a strumming pattern and there is a quick change between chords I'll either do an "open" strum of all the strings for a transition into the next chord or I'll do a palm mute of the chord I'm playing into and then do the actual chord

I love sustained chords for acoustic; primarily Asus and Dsus ... I'm also partial to 2-note Powerchords (thinner sounding) as opposed to 3-note Powerchords (fuller sounding)
