Man, I remember when I wanted to play so bad, but my fingers hurt so bad!!  At work, I'd press my fingers against the corner of my desk all day hoping that would speed up the process...don't know if it worked but the tips of my left hand now are like stone...and they're flat, which is sort of crazy.
I tried the emery board thing, but it made my fingertips too smooth and they wouldn't hold the string very well...if that makes any sense.  If I get a ridge or something that's bugging me, I cut it off with a fingernail clipper.
I'm not even touching #5!

I'm with Zurf; any lead part to any song ever.  Always thought it would be cool to play the intro to Crazy on You by Heart...never even tried.  I'd like to play the riff to Pretty Woman...might be able to do that one if I practiced.

I have the Hartke 30 watt bass amp and I like it.  Led me to buy the Hartke 60 watt for my electric....man that thing can sound dirty!

welcome to the site hcullis!
someone much smarter than I will answer about fifth chords...something about only playing the first and fifth notes of a chord, sometimes the third.  Mostly used in rock / metal music--mostly on electric.
I hate tabs--I think they have value for lead parts, but if you're just learning, I'd suggest just learning the chords.
And sweet child of mine, for the most part, is a lot of D C G...easy song...no barre chords--good one to learn if you're just starting out.  You can look up the whole thing in the song section.
I don't think I've been much help here--but welcome to the site!

My favorite T-shirt says "Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult"...so I'm with you kath--the whole age thing is a state of mind.

OK, it's not a lyric, but I'll throw it out there anyway--Shakespeare's sonnet "My Mistress eyes are nothing like the sun"....talks about how imperfect she is...how normal she is, but she's still the most wonderful thing ever in his eyes.

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red:
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak,--yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go,
My mistress when she walks, treads on the ground;
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

One of my favorite lines of all time is from a Milton sonnet---Milton had gone blind & was no longer able to look upon his love...but he could dream....and he would see her in his dreams....and then he would wake up....and this is the line;
"I woke, she fled, and the day braught back my night".

I love that line...remember it from my college days....1983 to be exact.

I love new strings!  I had a dry toasted bagel for lunch yesterday, so I still had $7 in my pocket to pick up some new strings on the way home.  Just me taking care of my guitar...put some lemon oil on the fretboard...shined her up real good, then played some "unplugged" stuff....Just Like Heaven by the Cure...Numb by Linkin Park....ahhh it was a great night.

OK, this doesn't answer the question, but SouthPaw, your lyric reminded me of this gem:
"You done stomped on my heart,
and mashed that sucker flat
baby you just sort-a
stomped on my aorta
You started steppin' out with guys
I felt us drift apart
and every step you took
was a stomp upon my heart".

So.....sad.......

My wife is 46, started playing bass a year ago, now I find her with my guitar as often as her bass.  Heck, we're both 46 and we started a band about 6 months ago...like the old saying goes "growing old manditory, growing up optional."

I think I've broken a law; I've never even tried to play house of the rising sun...probably going to loose my chordie card over that one.
David, I tried Country Roads in the begining, but there is a Bm in the bridge that I couldn't do for three years.
The first song I rememeber really working on was The River--Bruce Springsteen...I used to DREAM of playing it all the way through without messing up.
Leaving on a Jet Plane was one of my first as well.
Oh, and here's a confession--Highway 101 song that I love, "Whiskey, If you were a Woman"--a guy singing that song just isn't right, but I'd do it at the top of my lungs...as long as no one was listning.

Hey I can play two of those chords!

I got this Zoom effects pedal, and I look down at it, click through some settings look all serious, then people really think I know what I'm doing.  I keep it on the same two stupid settings, but I'm always clicking the thing--a diversionary tactic to get their mind off my lack of skill.  "He's clicking the pedal...he MUST be good!".  Then I play a D , Dsus, D2 in rapid succession to really wow the crowd ("the crowd" consists of my two australian shepherds...actually only one sticks around, the other has no sense of music)

Hey, you can always do what I do--play whatever you can and just tell people you're "making it your own"...artists do that, they put their own spin on things...works every time!
Good Luck!

Bobbi is a good name....wasn't one of the Hee-Haw girls named Bobbi?....no, Barbie--Barbie Benton...man, there's a name from the past.
Just so you know, this line of thought took me to a "hee haw girls" google search--to find NAMES of course, not pictures.  No good possibilities...one of the girls was named Mackenzie--good name, but I don't know if it works for a guitar...

I just went through the same thing deaken---
I had settled on the smallest line 6 which had some umph for $100.  Crate has a 30 watt at $100 which was in the running.  The Marshall 30 watt was $120 I think, but only had one channel if I remember right.
But if you need to play over a drum kit--espicially rock / metal, a dink amp isn't going to get it done.  I went with the 60 watt Hartke for $199 (talked him down to $191 with my incredible negotiating skills) at Sam Ash--has a tube pre-amp so you'll get some serious nasty gain out of the thing--I love it, the thing gets very dirty. You'll want to get a footswitch as well--run you another $20.
Might want to check out www.craigslist.com and see what you come up with used.  Amps can take so much abuse I just shyed away from going the used route.
Good luck!

Alvee, I tried the wedgies, but because of the impression for your thumb, I got the sense that pick wasn't bending the same on the upstroke--I get one out of the "pick box" every now and then, but just can't get used to them.  I'm still stuck on the Tortex .58's...I think that is a dunlop product too.  Use a heavier one...the yellow one whatever that is, for my electric.  Has anyone tried the Ultex pics?  I like how they sound but the lightest .6 feels real stiff to me.  Think I'm going to try the Clayton pics because they come in this cammo pattern that looks pretty cool...hey, there's a good reason to buy 'em.
Dunlop has a lot of strong products I think--my favorite capo is a dunlop and I love it.  All my guitar cleaner / wax stuff is dunlop...good stuff.

We play this song in our worship band that kills me--something like a Cm7, then a G#m or something like that...then I slide the barre up to 6 to get an Eb, then I'm back to a Bbsus that I like to play at the first fret....driving song with absolutely no breaks--I have to sit down, prop my feet up on the stool, and just gut it out.  After a couple run-throughs, then the service, I'm in tears.  I want to shake my hand so bad to get the cramping out, but that's probably bad form.

OK, going to throw this out there--my friends don't like this, but I think it would be a great band name--a line from the 9 inch nails song "Hurt"...

Empire of Dirt

OK I said it.  Even if it doesn't work for a name, it's a great image.

I always thought you could come up with a good band name by starting with "Ministry of __________"

Ministry of Deception
Ministry of Thought
Minsistry of......I don't know, whatever you're into

Moddish, I have the very same guitar!  Had her 5 years, and I've had naming her too.  With the tone, and the fact that she's soft....the wood will show everything...she wants to be named Molly--it just fits.  But the problem is, my daughters best friends name is Molly, and if they found out I named my guitar Molly...well it could be considered wierd.  So I guess her name is molly....but it's a secret.

...see someone play, and you can't believe you're playing the same insturment.  I mean, I'm happy if I can hit my D to Bm changes with any consistancy, and then you see something like this:

This guy plays the Simpson's theme on classical guitar--amazing stuff.

Humbled, I will now go back to work.

Guitardoc!  Hope all is well at your end of the woods...with a Cybertwin, how could it not be!

I play my accustic thru a 30 watt Crate which I love.  If I upgrade, think I'll go for the Fishman Loudbox--I hear great things about that amp.

Play my electric thru a 60 watt Hartke--which I think gives you a lot of amp for your money.  I know there are a ton of amps with a higher quality sound, but for $200 you can't beat it.  If I could have any amp...other than your cybertwin, I'd probably go with a Genz-Benz El Diablo or Mesa / Boogie Stiletto.

new band called Red--End of Silence is their debut album.  Hard to clasify them; hard core / rock with some insustrial / alt / classical (they are not afraid of strings) thrown in for good measure.
GuitarDoc--you need to play them through your fender cybertwin--the windows would shake my friend!

This topic is exactly why I love this site--look at all the ages, the cultures, all sitting around playing guitar...man that would be so cool if we had one huge jam!
Anyway, just turned 46, wanted to play guitar since I was a kid, but I never got one until my wife surprised me for my 40th birthday & I've picked it up every day since.  Self taught.  I'm a trainer in the Human Resources field, but dream of quitting and being in ministry with kids full time....what else...3 kids, two are out of the house so there's only one left to tell me to "turn that music down!".  My wife is very supportive, plays bass, and is learning to play a little guitar too.  She's a Youth Pastor at a church here outside of Cincinnati.
Have a good weekend all!

Gota do Monster Mash...it's the law.
It's in the Chordie Index...C F D I think.
What about the Adams Family theme song? That could work

mherbert--those are classic!

I always thought The Dead Kennedy's was a little over the top.
Just heard of a band called the Snot Rockets which has a nice ring....
