Hello Folks,
After reading all comments, and thanks to all for the replies, would it be reasonable to assume that an overdrive pedal would be more suitable for rhythm style playing than a distortion pedal or other type of pedal?  If I have got this wrong, feel free to set me straight.

Hello tandm3, craig 23, thanks for your comments
jaygordon 75, thanks for your kind advice. The Boss SD-! super overdrive has been suggested to me by others so I will have a closer look at it now that I have some direction.
I will also take up your advice re- guitar knobs all the way up, lots of gain on amp.
Needless to say, I am not too familiar with modern electric guitars and amps etc, having bashed away on accoustics since the late seventies, however I am having a ball trying.
Much appreciated

Hello Doug and thanks for your reply.
I have had several looks at pedals on musiciansfreind.com, theres hundreds of them.
Living in a regional area so far from town is not the only problem I have, I am 60 years of age and if I start trying out all the pedals that are available, I may not live long enough to find the right one. LOL.
Some one may come up with a solution yet, I live in hope.

Hello will236, I am with bensonp on this, learn to use your 2nd,3rd,4th fingers. This is not a bad way to play a G chord as well, it makes the change to a C chord quite easy I found.
You seem to be prgressing very well after only 6 days, take your time and everything will fall into place and you will wonder what you made such a fuss about.

tandm3, thanks for your reply. If you have played for 35 years and the Digi-tech RP 500 is too much for you, then I am not going to go anywhere near it.
Pity we do not live closer, I would love to have a rat around in that box of pedals you mentioned.

Tandm3,  I found your reply quite negitive, not the kind of advice I have come to expect from friendly fellow Chordians. My question was "can anyone point me in the right direction" and went on to describe my music taste and equipment so as to maybe get some advice that is relevant. Your reply, "you have to go to a music store and try some" does not help at all. Incidently, the nearest music store is 185klms from my home, hence my question on Chordie for some help, having done a lot of online research before hand.

Hello and Happy New Year to all.
I plan on buying a distortion/overdrive pedal but there seems to be thousands to choose from.
Can any one point me in the right direction?  My style of music is country, ballads and old time R&R, mainly from the 60s and 70s. I play a Greg Bennet Royale semi-hollow with humbuckers through a Kustom 65 watt amp, and a Maton elec/accoustic through an Ibanez Troubadour 35 watt accoustic amp. Both of these amps have chorus, reverb, echo and effects etc.  I "think" I need a pedal that will allow me to get some different noises from the gear that I have already got whilst still letting me play chords.
Any advice, including which pedals not to get would  be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bushy

Hello all,
I have just read back through the thread after I last posted. I have drifted off the origanal concept and I apologise for that.

Hello all, what an extrordinary world we live in. I work in central Queensland on the gas fields. The temperature over the last week has varied between 40deg C and 45deg C every day. That converts to 104deg F to 113deg F. This weather also requires continual trips to the grog shops, mainly to ensure that dehydration does not become a serious health issue. I will think of you poor devils freezing your butts off if you spare a thought for us down under slowly roasting.
I love this site and all of the great people on it and wish you all the best for the coming season

G'day Pining,  good choice on the maton em225c, I have had one now for 4yrs and it is a keeper for sure. Maton back up and service has been outstanding. Could not be happier. Only thing to be mindfull of is to watch the humidity if you live in such an area that has high humidity. A couple of tubes of a product called MUD, which you can get at most music shops will take care of this when placed in a case with your Maton.

Tommy Emmanuel, a great guitarist and a great Aussie. His brother Phil is no slouch on the guitar either, however not in the same league as Tommy. The guitar he plays is an Aussie made Maton. The Maton company dedicated a guitar to Tommy, why wouldn't they? Check out the Maton website.
thats enough trivia for now

Hello all,  I turned 60 a couple weeks back. Started on guitar back in secondry school about 1964 with a few mates and eventually started a band, I played bass back then. I have had many interuptions to playing over the years but hard at it again, for about 3 years this time around. A record of sorts for me. I am mainly self taught but have had a lot of help from Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and Austin Nicholls. Some of you may have heard of them. Great singing coaches as well. I am mostly into country and rockabilly these days, not too hard on the old joints. Live in Queensland, Australia.  Chordie is sensational.   Cheers Bushy

Willie has toured down here several times since the seventies and has a hugh following. In saying that, I think ole Trigger should be hung in the Australian Country Music Hall Of Fame.

Thanks dguyton, your'e a champ.  This is the sort of info I need. I will give "trainbilly" a try with a bit of reverb in accoustic. I will also have a look at www.mygdec.com/,  thanks for the tip.
Hope you don't mind if I get back to you with any other questions.

Hello Nela and thanks for your reply.  I do play electric guitars through the G-Dec but as this amp is digital, it has no knobs. The amp has multi function buttons to select effects, sounds, loops etc. and a master dial to adust these effects even further. Sound confusing?  You should try this amp.  LOL.  I think we had better wait untill someone that has used one of these amps comes along. Just as confusing is the names of some of the effects, never heard of some of them.  ducking delay?  triangle chorus? touch wah fuzz? alienator? These are all preset in the amp when you buy it, there is hundreds of them.  I am going mad with this amp and if dont get somewhere with it soon, it is going on e-bay

I have had a G-dec amp for a while now and not able to get the sound I am looking for. I mainly play chords with a country/old R&R style. Can any fellow Chordians help steer me in the right direction or offer suggestions as to some settings I might try to get a countryish sound. I only play with friends at their houses or my own home, we are all old timers and a bit bamboozled by this amp, but have a blast just the same.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello Zurf,  these symptoms are typical of either missing out on your daily dose of strumming, or, you have reached puberty.

Hello all, a great mix of ages on here.  I will be 60 in 2 weeks time. Started on guitar when I was in secondry school about 14 or 15 years of age. I have had a lot of stop and starts since then. First off conscription (Viet Nam), marriage, family, work. I now have 1 son and 2 grandaughters playing guitars, the eldest grandaughter plays keyboard as well, so we have some great jams together. Very special, 3 generations having good times together.
Happy days

Hello crizzut, I too have big hands and have had the same problems, as many others have also, I am sure.  Firstly, measure the nut width on your guitars to see if they are the same. The accoustic will probably be wider. Secondly, electric strings are considerably lighter than accoustic and do not need the same amount of pressure applied. You may just have to get used to the different guitars or buy another one that has same nut width as your favourite. Thirdly, check/adjust action on both guitars. I mentioned in another post that I have just bought a Greg Bennet electric, this has the same nut width as my accoustics and is much easier to play than a lot of other guitars I tried out.
Happy days

Thanks to all for your comments. After trying out several hollow body guitars, I settled on a Greg Bennet Royale and picked her up today. Sounds sweet, better sustain than Epi. Wild Kat and better overall than Ibanez and cheaper than both of these. I plugged it into my G-Dec at home, my wife still lives here and my dog did not run away so all is good so far.
I will keep you all posted on progress if you are interested.
Cheers for now

Hi jeremy, I have EXP's on a Ibanez Sage, sound good, hold tune ok, but are hard in the finger tips, they are rough compared to Elixers, which I normally use

I have found, after trying all sorts of things, that Fender Guitar polish and Fender Fret Board Conditioner works best for me. These are cheap and picked up at most music shops. I am not promoting Fender, just promoting a good product. I don't even own a Fender guitar.
