I have been playing guitar on a regular basis for over 30 years without ever taking a professional lesson. I have on the other hand learned from friends and people I have jammed with over the years also from watching other people play even wathing  music vidieos. I have been seriously considering taking lesson lately not to develop or change my style of playing but to improve certain skils. I have come to beleive that with some lessons from someone who is better than you can only benifit. Hey I figure use what you like and disreguard the rest. Aftrer all if you are paying an instructor he is working for you which makes you the boss

Mrjay, I was aware that fender took Guild over but I did not know that they were being constructed in China. Thats a kick in the head. Anyway when at Steve's the other day I played their top Guild and it's one of the few that really impressed me. I knew for sure right then that even though I was going to be investing in a martin I had no choice but to get my Guild restored. I am just wondering how I going to pay for it all. I am going to check out your guitar on the Guild webpage. Talk to you later

Yes all guitars player must pass the dreaded barre chord learning process. All that I can say one day when you can do it with absolutly no effort you will think back and say oh yea they were kinda hard to learn and laugh

hey Michel , I grew up in Rockville, Maryland a suburb of Washington DC. My parents were French Canadians. Met a girl she was going to move to Maryland and I somehow ended up here In Quebec. That websight for DeBussy gives no street adress. Do You have it. It's not that they were that friendly at Steve's, the guy basicly left me alone and told me help myself. When I had questions he did not seem to know a whole lot

Never mind about directions  I found how to get there

Hey Jersydevil I was wondering why you suggest to stay away from autograph models. Is it about the money or is there another reason. Just curious. I own the Gibson Lucille and I am quite happy with it. I have noticed however that besides BB I have yet to see any other musicians playing one

I recently tried out a taylor electic/acoustic at a guitar shop over the weekend (not plugged in) and it sounded like a regular acoustic to me. Can't really say if there is a difference when plugged in

I agree with Detman. There is nothing like a quality instrument to encourage one to practice more and enjoy the process of improving ones skills. When I first started thats what I did. I figured if I invested that much money I was damn sure going to learn how to play. By the way it was a Fender Stratocastor $280.00 big money back then in 1973

Hey Michel, I am kinda new in Montreal and not exactly sure when I hear the tearm South Shore. I am in Longueuil, where would that be in terms of getting to the South Shore and locating Claude DeBussy and which town or part of Montreal would that be. I have been to one of the Archambaults actualy a bunch of times. The thing about them is they don't seem th want to budge on their prices. I did notice a wide range of Normans and other Quebec made guitars. I think I will drop by and test drive some  of those Normans. I will let yiu know what I think. One guitar I have had my eye on there is a resonator guitar. Ever hear of Goldtone by Paul Beird. It sems pretty nice although I don't really have much experience with Resonators. A Resonator is a dream guitar for sometime later in the future for me.

Wow mrjay I never mentioned that I was at Steve's, but thats exactly where I was. If you get a chance check out that Eric CLapon Bellezza Nera and tell me what you think. It's very cool hearing from people in the same neighborhood . My acoustic is sick and she needs to see the doctor (luthier) The guy at steve's gave me the name of what he claims to be the best in Montreal a Mr LaPort, anyway I think I will get some opionns from some of those guys at the Montrael Guitar how .....Thanks.                                                                                                                   Oh yea I agree with you on the Boucher. They did not do much for me . I found them to be twangy. Some guy came in when I was playing and he would just not stop talking about how great they were. That whole made in Quebec thing I guess

yo detman since you are the only guitat player you might ask the keyboard player to get together just you and him and work at figuring the chords to the songs. have him play his chord and slide a bar chord up and down the neck until you hit the right chord. You can the transform it to an open chord. One thing I would suggest also is that at the next preformance you bring a tape recorder and record the songs. With the recorded music you can practice and figure out chords replaying as much and as often as needed. People often tell me that I am lucky to be such a good guitar player. I attribute that to only one thing. The amount of hours and hours I have practiced . I honestly beleive that anyone with that many hours of practice would be as good or better than me on the guitar. Keep Pushinhg and it will come

Also it is quite common when playing electric. Everyone wants to be louder than the other, thus drowning out the other guy. Place you amp so that you are standing directly in front of it and not pointing directly at the other musicians. This sould help so that at least you can hear yourself

I made my way to the big guitar store in town here for the first time. I then made my way to the room with the high end acoustic guitars. The man told me to help myself and that I could play to my hearts content. There were martins, taylors, gibsons and enen some guilds (guild is what I have now)Also a canadian brand Boucher. Hanging up real high was that dream guitar I had always dreamed about. (less than 500 made)I had no clue they were still available new. I stood on a bench and pulled it down. It was a martin, the Bellezza Nera. An Eric Clapton Signiture model designed by EC himself himself. A mere $5,000.00 away. Anyway for some reason his idea of the perfect neck was very wide. Too wide for me, although the sound and action were what I would call absolutly perfect I came to realize that this guitar was not made for me. It just goes to show the importance of trying out a guitar before investing your money. I spent an hour and a half playing all the different guitars. One model that really surprised me was the Gibson Blues King. A small body guitar with quality  sound and a very impressive punch for  $ 2,000.00. And of course the martins in a wide price range,  depending on how much bling bling you want. I am ready to put a down payment and put one on layaway I just want to make sure itis the right one for me. I still have not made up my mind. Correction I have narrowed it down. It will be a martin.

hey Alttex I have a question for you. Are there sites like chordie geared for learning the piano. I ask because we have a piano in our livingroom and I would like to take it up. I have been playing guitar for 32 years perhaps the same would apply for learning the piano

nzlectric I don't know what kind of music you are into but what comes to mind for me as far as some easy struming might be some eagles, perhaps peaceful easy feeling or lyin eyes

I must agree with Roger. I have my guitars on a stand  (both acoustic and electric) in the living room and it is just so much easier to pick up the acoustic whe the urge to play hits me

I would say the best way to explain would be rhythm being chords and lead would be single notes and as far as a band goes there is really no better way to improve ones skills than putting to gether a band and putting together songs practicing on a regular basis. You will know when you have enough songs down to unveil the new band

To truly get the most out of the whole guitar experience I beleive one needs to have both. When I have someone over and they just happen to be a fellow guitar player I will offer them my acoustic and I can cut loose  on lead of course on the electric, unless they are better than me I will let them play the electric. For the most part for me my electric is for jammin with others or jammin with recorded music
