Whether finger picking or using a pick, I use a guide finger... I let my pinkie barely rest on the pickguard just below the bottom string. Doing this gives me a reference point and eventually you'll know right were each string is.  If finger picking it's also helpful to designate a string to a certain finger. I use my thumb for the bass note of the chord and sometimes the string under that depending on the chord and pattern, my pointer gets the d string, middle gets the g string, ring finger gets the b string. Sometimes I use the ring for the e as well and sometimes I'll pull the pinkie I use as an anchor... It just depends on the piece.

Work at it slowly and accurately. Trying to go too fast just causes you to hit the wrong string and everytime you do that you're teaching that finger to hit the wrong string. Muscle memory works both ways so be sure to hit it right and then work on building up speed.

Also you said you're watching the fretboard. I'd recommend trying to break that habit. If you're depending on your eyes to find the string you're not really going to build good muscle memory.  Try practicing some in the dark, it really helps to break the habit of watching the fretboard.

Just some thoughts...

It relaxes me man. If I'm home and the honey does are caught up or she's just not pushing me to hard at the moment to do them, then more than likely I'm doodling on a guitar... Most Sundays I relax and play most of the day anyway... Right now I'm fumbling through Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straights... Been messing around with it since I heard you play it at the campfire smile

Lime Tree by Trevor Hall...  Got the chords and such but I'm trying to get the drum beats worked out so I can play them on the guitar body while playing the chords at the same time.  Hard to get it all timed just right....

I'm not religous but am respectful of it and I always judge what I type by that...  If I wouldn't say it in a church, I don't say it here...  However chordie does have a censoring feature and most unacceptable language has been cataloged. So if someone tries to post a word that's been deemed unfit it is changed automatically when the post is made.

Some forums allow direct upload but unfortunatly Chordie does not... So you'll need to upload it to a hoasting site like Flickr, photobucket, etc...
Then you can take that html and insert it...      [ ] html here [ ]

You're going to need to sand all the old glue off and be sure the bracing is all fully intact... You really need to remove the top for this repair. Depending on the year, Seagulls have a radiused top so that needs addressing also.  Titebond is the glue to use unless you have access to hide glue. Deep reach clamps can be used or they have screw clamps that mount inside the guitar and brace against the back that can be utilized for the bracing. Gorilla glue is a no no. Not only does it require the addition of moisture to bond properly but during curing it expands like foam creating voids in the joint that won't transfer the vibratons correctly. Spruce cleats will handle the cracks....

Still looking for the chart but wanted to add that what you're feeling probably has more to do with the strings stiffness than it's tension... This differes from brand and type also... You just have to experiment to find what works best with your style and set up...

Also when considering strings it's always best to consult the manufacturer. Guitar tops (the good ones) are tuned to a certain tension and perform best in that range. Most think that mediums will always sound better than lights and lights better than xtra lights, etc... but that's not always true. Let's take the guitar I'm holding now ,a '73 yairi DY77, it's tuned/built to use light gauge strings and if I were to put mediums on it, not only would the top become overdrivin and become muddy sounding but it would also void the warranty and likely cause damage! There's actually a label in this guitar that gives you the proper string gauge and warning that if you excede that it will void warranty and likely cause damage...   Just something to keep in mind...

Now back to looking for that chart smile I keep finding topics online with people discussing the chart but can't actually find IT...lol

Different strings do have different tensions... Even in the same brand they are different... For instance martin marquee lights have less tension then standard martins of the same diameter. I have a tension chart posted somewhere in Guitars and Accesories that lists the most popular brands and their tensions when strung to pitch... I'll see if I can find it and post a link here for ya.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ9QmSKL4GA  Here you go smile  I recommend checking out all the vids in his free 12 step lessons... Lots of great tidbits in them! I learned from his videos...

The other most common symbols you'll see in tab are  /, h, & p

/ this indicates a slide...  For instance 3/5 would mean to pick the note on the 3rd fret and then slide to the 5th

h means hammer on...  So 3h5 would mean to hit the note on the 3rd fret and then using another finger you hammer on (fret quickly) to the  5th.

p is a pull off... take 5p3.  You'd play the note on the 5th fret and then release it with the 3rd fret already.

We had a post similar to this a year or 2 ago but I couldn't find it to resurrect it so I figured I'd just start a new one...

Hopefully we can keep this going and have a place to put a face to some of the names here. smile

Feel free to post up a pic of yourself or of you jamming with others!  If you have trouble uploading pics you can email them to chordiephotoalbum@yahoo.com and I'll get them posted for you.

Here's a pic of 3 chordians to start it off.

This was taken by my wife during one of our weelky jam sessons...

I'm on the left, Truckstop is in the middle and headstrong is on the right..  They don't visit the forums much but are dedicated chordians none the less..  Truckstop has been hanging around a bit more lately and will probably start posting soon....
