NELA wrote:Years ago, at the Chandlier Islands, I went wade phishing for speckle trout and redfish. Now, in doing this, we never used waders - just a pair of shorts and no shoes. As you would catch a fish you would put it on a 10' long stringer and tie that to a belt loop on your shorts. The knot you would use had to be a slip knot that would come loose when a shark hit the phish you had put on the stringer. If / when a shark got after your phish you would know it as they would jerk you off your feet. And that's the reason you wore shorts without any shoes. It's much easier to pull your shorts off and wash the poop outta them than it is a pair of chest waders.
I've done this type of phishing all along the Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas coast and there's nothing like fighting a 30" trout or a big redfish while standing chest deep in water.
Nela
NELA, you sure know how to tell a fishing story; and that's a beauty. I can't imagine wearing live bait on my person, while wading shark-infested waters. That's really living on the edge.
We have to wear waders and polar fleece underneath, 'cuz our water doesn't reach a comfortable temperature until at least June. It'll be barely above freezing for the first few weeks. Our trout are the freshwater species, related to either Arctic Char (our speckled trout) or Atantic Salmon (our brown trout). We do have rainbows and grey trout as well, but they're not as plentiful as the other two. The bigguns'll go the mouths of the rivers (estuaries) in the summer, to stay cool and find food, but they're not really a salt water fish like the specks you're talking about. I've seen some of those being caught on the TV fishing shows, and they're a pretty fish, for sure:
This is my absolute favorite Flex Seal commercial:

MKM, you reminded about some of the different terms we use either side of the border (soda = pop), and this commercial reminds me a gal I taught in a class years ago, who was from Philadelphia. She always said soda, and she also said "water" exactly the same way pitchman Phil Swift says it in this commercial. This one's a hoot!
The "Head Pickle Rhymer" strikes again ... whatta hoot! Lots of stuff I can relate to from past adventures, but the pirate angle makes it even better. Love it!
Hahaha ... I think you're on to something, BadEye.
Thanks for the big grin I'm wearing right now! There's picture of a nice brown at around 0:33 that reminds of this one I caught about 10 years ago. The larger male browns sure ain't pretty, but fight like pitbulls:
This guy came from the Wallace River up in the Wentworth Valley, BadEye ... you likely know the area.
KIR mentioned Joni Mitchell ... an amazing talent. Her song "Twisted" is one of the quirkiest songs ever, really showcases her vocal abilities, and is super-fun to memorize and sing.
Flex Seal ... I never even thought of that ... what a great idea! Greg's waders were covered by warranty (ORVIS) so they sent him a new pair. And there's nothing like a can o' cocktail weenies, beef jerky, my wife's cinnamon buns, and hot cocoa in a thermos to keep a feller on the water when the fish are biting.
His guitar is as big as he is! I just had a look through Gibson's jazz box lineup, and don't see anything much like this in their current offering. Good tune, BadEye ... reminded me (style-wise) of a lot of Matt Minglewood's material.
It's now just two weeks to go ... I'm going insane! My best fishing buddy just texted me last evening, to say that his new waders have arrived. That good news, so I won't have to listen to him gripe about his soggy butt this year! Our Spring weather is shaping up to make it the best season opener we've seen in a couple of years, so I've got it bad.
Great work, Russell ...
So good to hear from you (been a while) and obviously the creative juices are still flowing. Nicely done!
keepitreal wrote:Don't know how I missed this one, but it's awesome. Reminds me of something the late John Denver may sing. Perhaps as spring is upon us you could do a follow up.
That's an awesome idea, KIR! I'm going to tuck this idea away until our leaves start to come out, and I'm enjoying my first early morning coffee on the deck. That's usually early-May in our climate. There should be lots of sights, smells, and sounds to work with.
Great suggestion ... I'm excited!
mekidsmom wrote:Alright... I'll attempt to do Thursday, since it's here and I'm here. I'm thinking I better just stick with gals in general!
Featuring a collection of the many great women in music would be excellent, and us guys have not given them their proper place in the limelight. You've got a huge talent pool to draw from, and likely hundreds that I've never heard of.
You go, MKM ... you go!
Right on, Amy ... right on! What a great idea for a weekly thread, and a stellar way to start it. I'd never heard of Ingrid, and found myself smiling all the way through. Super stuff!
Lots of personal hurt behind your poem, Beestie ... get well soon!
NELA ... been hoping your rain is starting to subside, and your waterways are getting back in prime fishing condition. I'd love the idea of going fishing everyday for 2 or 3 months, except that I'm still employed full-time. We squeeze it in on Saturday's, and I've got a couple extra days booked off for the the start of April. A couple guys I fish with have been counting down the days as well, so we're itching to get on the rivers and casting for trout. I don't use worms, as I find that fly fishing is more effective for trout.
Tight lines, my friend!

Obviously ... and that's Alice Cooper next to Carrell, not Neil Peart. The Carrell <-> Cooper resemblance is the point, and here's a pic showing the Peart <-> Hanks resemblance:
Jethro Tull "A New Day Yesterday" New York, 1970

With the Prog Rock column now having moved from Saturday to Wednesday, this old JT tune seemed appropriately titled. This one's from their 1969 album "Stand Up". Those who had the original vinyl with the jacket will remember the fold-out of the band inside, as they stand up when it's opened. I don't recall what I was smoking the day I bought this, but it seemed really cool at the time ... in a birthday card sort of way.
Looks like a solid combo, Beamer. I haven't got any first-hand experience with GFS pickups, but everything I've heard about them has been positive.
May the tone be with you!
It's often funny how someone's doppleganger is in a completely different "line of work", and it makes for a good smile if we imagine them switching roles. Another example is the striking resemblance between Rush's drummer Neil Peart, and actor Tom Hanks. And I've always found this one funny:
Nice tones out of your Strat, Graham ... and love the "Music is my life" T-shirt. What does the rest of it say?
Nice one, Peatle ... the "butterfly nets" imagery at the start really kick-starts the imagination.
Good work, Beamer! There almost seems to be an anger behind the happy, but I guess knowing it's a punk style of song, that's to be expected. Could be a couple of growling dive bombs or pick-edge slides in where the expletives are?
Here's a quote from "The Guardian" newspaper:
"Keith Emerson, the keyboardist with the progressive rock supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer, has died at the age of 71. Emerson was known as one of the most successful and experimental musicians of his era, with most of his work with the band being released in the 1970s. Police found Emerson’s body at his home in Santa Monica, California. Sergeant Rudy Camarena said it appeared Emerson had taken his own life."

Nice choice, Badeye! I'll freely admit that I'm not really a C&W fan, but Waylon (and a lot of other C&W guitarists) can pick with the best of them.
No better way than Jerry and the guys to kick off your thread, BGD! That's a sweet looking custom guitar he's got there, with what look to be P90's for pickups ... all tricked out!
Thanks for this ... looking forward to more!
