Hey Cam - I agree with StranSongs - Try tuning it by ear with your own acoustic. The A/E aspect should not have any effect. Don't plug it in, tune it acoustically. Have your nephew or wife pluck your in-tune guitar and match the tuning with your nephews. If you get them matched and the nephews guit still sounds like crap, it's the strings. Really old strings will sound like crap even when in tune.

Great vid Wayne. I thought I'd add a link to some bass run exercises that I've found useful:

Loved the harp. A bluegrass tune from selso, unexpected. Great job!

Do a youtube search for "the scottsman" or the "scottsmans kilt", or "the drunken scottsman"...

Funny song I first heard performed by Mike Cross, a fantastic North Carolina artist very popular in my college days. Ring ding didlle a did e o, ring ding diddle all day... big_smile

Beautiful tribute Mark. Forever soldier on!

Here is the link to Mark's song in the songwriting section for those (like me) who like to read along.

Yea Pix - We are gonna bring some rods. I've been to the outer banks many, many times. Truly is paradise right here in our own state. Usually surf fishing is the middle of summer isn't the best and I'm not one to spend a day sittin on a pier. We'll dig up some sand fleas and throw out some cut bait and see what bites. Figure the kids might enjoy reelin' something in.

buvvy - The more I think about it, the more likely some surfing will be part of the week. A bunch of kids are joining us and should be some fun.

Hi Wayne - Although Fender is one of the largest guitar manufacturers (if not the largest), to say "most" guitars are made by them is not quite true. Fender Musical Instrument Corp also owns Guild, Tacoma, Gretsch and other brands (see link below).

I surfed a bit as a kid and that vid makes me want to give it a shot again! I'm Outer Beach bound on Saturday, usually amongst the best waves on the entire east coast there. It's been 20 + years since I've been on a board and I was thinking surf riding a kayak may be all for me this time.

Then again, my 10 year old has never surfed. How cool would it be to rent a couple of boards and teach him. The first time up on a board was one of the biggest thrills I ever had.

Hi Jason and welcome to chordie!

Although metal has not been my thing for many years now, your resume' seems quite impressive. I hope you hang around as I am sure you have much to offer the fine folks here.

Best of luck in the management of your epilepsy.

Jeff

Thanks Cytania,

Today I went over to Greensboro NC  to "Guitar Center", and looked at everything inside of my price range, and a little above to be honest, but about 1/4 of the way around the room a saw a $2.200 Martin, well me being me, I said what the heck, I picked it up, sat down with it, and played it so long that it most likely needs to be rectrung, it sounded so beauitful, so easy to play, even better than a $2.000 dollar Gibson I picked up. So after putting those back, I made my way on artound the room looking at other brands, Ovation, Seagull, Takamine, Breedlove, Ibanez, as well as others, but everything sounded inferior to that Martin, ......

   Cam

Cam - Up to this point in your post, I thought for sure you bought the Martin! I was ready to congratulate you and invite you over for a cookout immediately! smile

Oh well, don't feel bad - I've been to that same GC twice ready to buy and left empty handed both times. Not much of an acoustic selection and what is there have all been well played. If I want a used guitar, I'm going right to CraigsList, not GC.

Not sure what your budget is, but I'm gonna tout Composite Acoustics. They have a new OX series that I have heard great things about and a price point quite a bit lower than previous models (I have a GXi). These guitars sound and play absolutely fantastic and are virtually indestructible. Here's a few links for you to check out. If interested, I'd recommend MacNichol for their 30 day return policy. I'm telling you, my guitar has as much punch as any Martin I've ever heard.

Ken - As the unofficial King of Scotland, I would think you have the power to grant Happy Scotland Day any and every day you choose. If I were in your role, I'd choose every Friday. So Happy Scotland Day to you my friend!

Sorry I missed it. A belated Happy Nela Birthday to you sir!

Hey - I suck at singing and playing individually AND at the same time. As long as I'm having fun, that's all that matters.

Seriously, try playing around with a capo. It sounds like you might be having an issue finding your natural vocal key.

Now...where the heck did I put my keys? It's the key of a dog howlling WHOOOOOOO. smile

A good wipe down with a micro-fiber cloth at every string change should do the trick. A little dampness on the cloth won't hurt and a touch of glass cleaner on any particular stubborn spots should do the trick. Here's a link with some more detailed info:

Seersha - If the strings were very old, that alone could be a major source of your problems. A set of strings typically last me only 2 to 4 weeks at best. But the guitar being in "the back of the shed" certainly couldn't do much good. Humidity and temperature changes will reek havoc on a wood instrument. Feel lucky there are no cracks or other structural issues.

Sounds like Joe is going to give you a free set-up which is a very good thing. This likely will include an adjustment of the truss rod to  provide proper neck relief.  A neck reset would typically cost several hundred dollars.

I bought one of these Washburn Rovers a while back for travel. It serves it's purpose, but due to a few drawbacks and since most of my travel is by car instead of plane, I have hardly used it and prefer traveling with a full sized guitar.

The things I dislike about about the guitar are:

Thin tone - You can't expect much in this regards from such a small bodied guitar, but it truly sounds more like a Uke or Banjo than a real guitar.

I could live with the tone well enough since it was just for practicing in the hotel room. What I really didn't like was the balance (or lack of). Due to the small size, all of these guitars are inherently neck heavy and require the use of a strap even while sitting. This may not bother some folks, but I really didn't care for it and couldn't get used to it.

Welcome to chordie gamegeek. Most recommended and great free site is justin sandercoe. Check the beginners course.

Hang in there past the initial finger pain - that's where most folks give up. You'll build calluses pretty quickly and then the guitar will be a companion for life.
