I agree that the campground was very nice. I've been to quite a few in my lifetime being near enough to the Adirondacks. The thing that impressed me most was NO MOSQUITOS! I loved that part! Having the river rushing by while sleeping was a big plus. The people at the site were fun loving and no one was obtrusive. The ground was even. The people running the campground made everyone feel at home. There was enough nearby to do if one wanted to... or... you could just cook cow and have drinks and relax.
COOL! Thanks for sharing! That is one beautiful animal.
Welcome to chordie!!!
I prefer medium strings, I don't care for the way lights sound on my guitar. I strum pretty hard and do a lot of chopping too. I find the longer I play at any sitting the harder I tend to apply tension while fretting, which isn't necessary just a bad habit. I like my nails painted and my hands soft, but I like my guitar callouses even more.
YAY! I'm sure you did great Jeff! I'm surprised that it was your first time though. I did see a youtube vid from a small chordie get together and you play quite well. I know what you mean about nerves, and it does get easier with time. I agree with Roger, somehow I think getting used to singing into a mic may just make all the difference in the world. Good for you, and cudos to Toney for "tricking" you into it! That's what good friends are for!
You know, I was really surprised when I saw his last show. I had remembered a couple years back where he had done a show all about his show. Someone had asked how long he planned to be speaking during the 60 minute segment. He said he would be sharing his opinion as long as there were people willing to listen to it. I am thinking he must have known that his time was coming to have called it quits with 60 minutes. While I didn't always agree with him, I always found him enlightening and a pleasure to watch and listen to his straightforward viewpoints! RIP Mr. Rooney!
I'm sure I must have bad wrist position as well. I have double jointed thumbs and so I do NOT put my thumb on the back of the guitar neck because then it pops out of joint and hurts... but by NOT doing this, I'm sure my wrist is in a bad position in the end. I also find, the longer I play at any given time, the harder I tend to push with my fretting fingers (even though it's not necessary). I have to constantly check my pressure, else my fingers get sore quicker. I have a feeling the whole thumb thing would probably solve this problem but I digress... I have a double jointed thumb.
Hey Scott! Welcome to Chordie! You'll notice there's a bunch of good people here willing to help and to accept your help from newbies to those that have been playing forever.

I will be sure to let you know how it goes Roger, once I'm able to get down to one of the open mic's. Unfortunately, it's hunting season here right now... so the hubster's been busy playing in the woods chasing deer around after work. I'm really excited to go play in public again though. I won't say I want to make money, but I do want to play because I enjoy it and want others to enjoy listening to it! Again, thank you to everyone for the pats on the back.
GREAT job Jim! Well... for setting it up, and I'm sure you'll do great. I enjoy listening to your recordings although I don't always comment. I have no doubt the seniors will enjoy it too.
Happy Birthday and NGD! Being a little thrifty (even if it's because you HAVE to) is still fun when you get something new! Enjoy!!
The song I wrote for my anniversary is written in the third person. It IS about us, but I did write it to be telling a story about two people so it could be sung by someone other than me. I have high doubts that anyone but myself will ever sing it though.
Running Bear
Tom Dooley
I think a lot of story songs are written in the third person - I like story songs. I wonder though about writing from the man's perspective instead of the woman's. I tend to switch songs' lyrics up when they're "man" songs so that they sound right when I, a female, sing them.
Well, welcome to the forums Kajir!
Leaving on a Jet Plane - John Denver. A nice easy three chord song
Thanks guys!! It was a really awesome feeling!
I played the new song I wrote - Broken on the Floor, Killing Me Softly, and my version of Lover's Cross... then when they wanted more, I did Black is the Color, my version of Your Man, Running Bear (for the couple older fellows still in the room who were beeming smiles at my "old songs"), and I think one more but I can't even remember right now! LOL!
Well, I am hard on myself because I have some issues... been being told my whole life that singing and music is for the LOVE of it, was persuaded NOT to go to college for music when I was a teenager, and well, I'm just fighting all that bologna that was jammed into my head at an early age. All I ever wanted to do was sing, but I guess Mom and Dad didn't want a "starving musician" for a daughter. So... I did step out of my comfort zone and I liked it, and I WILL do it again and next time I won't be as nervous. I'm getting MUCH better with the nerves!!! I think the "hired guy" hosts an open mic on Thursdays at a local bar, but I don't think too many people do much more than use him as a human karaokie machine. I think I may just go check that out and bring my guitar.
I received a phone call the other night, one I've received a few times in fact. "We're having a party this Saturday, we've hired so and so to play his GEEtar and want you to come. Have a few drinks, have some food and a good time, and maybe you can play a few songs while he's taking his breaks. He'll have his whole set up here, mics and all. Won't you come on over?" I said I'd try, as I always say... but... this time I actually went! Ha, they were surprised when I walked in the door with my guitar. I sat there having a few drinks enjoying myself for quite a bit. Surprisingly, the "hired guy" pretty much just strummed and sang like I do... I wasn't feeling like I was out of my league for the first time ever. Finally, toward the end of the evening the "hired guy" took his break and introduced me. So, up I went and it was not only fun but everyone seemed to enjoy it! Since he only had one mic and my guitar has no electronics he offered me his Ibanez which played very nicely! I only picked out three songs, but they wanted more so I dug out a few more songs and kept playing till I saw the "hired guy" wandering around the room, then offered him back his guitar and mic, and of course thanked him (and helped him pick up a little when all was said and done - we talked guitars for a bit!). The best compliments I received were: Do you play out? You should play out! -- and of course, you're beautiful AND you have a beautiful voice! It was really awesome to get all the great compliments and encouragement. All the old timers left shortly after I started playing (it was apparently bed time), and I guess they were saying that they wished I'd have started the night off... apparently they liked me a little more than the "hired guy"! Such a great feeling to be complimented so highly. I could get used to it... although... I'm not so sure I'm ready to be famous LOL!
First... I'm a mom.
I'm also a cosmetologist... but because I prefer the artistry and chemistry portion of hair/skin/nails and I live in the sticks and am a mom first and foremost, I don't make much money at it. People want their hair done on a moments notice, they are loyal to their hairdresser, yet they think a cosmetologist is a moron and doesn't deserve to be paid well for their craft. Yep, they actually think that prices are negotiable. I think most waitresses make more money than hairdressers (and waitresses are paid less per hour). I found my shoulder really didn't like the job so much... so I just dabble in hair a little at home with some close friends and relatives.
I could sell a bikini to a 300 pound Eskimo.
I like to draw, but I don't think I draw well. My husband is a tattoo artist (and Ironworker) and he's been trying to talk me into picking up a tattoo gun for over a year now.
I'm self taught with electronic gadgets... and I love them. The down side to this is that every time anyone I know has a computer issue, they call me. I appreciate their vote of confidence, but I also believe some people just plain should NOT own a computer. LOL! I've had a couple websites like Chordie, although they weren't about guitars... more so babies and pregnancy and the like. If you have a question about pregnancy, I probably know the answer. I've considered becoming a doula (someone paid to be in the labor/delivery room with you... like a coach), but I won't. I've just been asked me to be on call for a friend's pregnancy, again. Having a baby is an amazing experience... watching the birth and being there to make sure the nurses and doctors are listening is entirely different and also an amazing experience as many of you daddies know!
I am awesome at reading fine print; comprehending contracts and legal documents and such. I like to say I get that from my Dad. We both agree that we have an odd knack for it and maybe that means we should both have seriously looked into getting into law or politics ... but we both agree that it would end up consuming us and turning us into mean hated people. We both also loved reading the writings of Shakespeare while in high school where MOST people had a difficult time following along. Interestingly enough, my Son is in the same boat right now. My dad was very heavily involved in his Union (Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers - he was a choo choo train driver), I too got involved in a Union I was in at one point. I didn't like how it put a big huge red target on my back with the company. Either my father or myself are the ones everyone in the family comes to when they have something that they need interpreted into layman's terms, or when they have to write a letter to a company or deal with lawyers. I do my own taxes, my husbands business taxes, my business taxes, and my mom's taxes and will probably do my sister's taxes and business taxes this next year. We've all tested out the "tax experts" and I tend to find the little things that they miss that everyone can claim LEGALLY
I have a 4 year old little girl that is high functioning autistic. I've just recently begun delving into that "world" - from therapies and doctors, to the educational and health laws and regulations around this disability. I think I've found a good place to put my "skills" to use in a way that will benefit me (my family) personally.
I sew a little. By a little, I mean only for special occasions. I made my wedding dress, and every year I make my kids Halloween Costumes. OH, and every now and then people ask me to hem something for them. I seem to be the person everyone likes to have there while they're getting ready for their own wedding. I can do their hair and makeup and fix their last minute clothing issues.
I like to bake. I cook all the time, but I really ENJOY baking. Breads, sweet rolls, cookies, etc. I don't care for pie dough though.
I own a hammer, 2 screwdrivers, a wrench, a pair of needle nose pliers, duct tape, plumbers tape, and twine. I can temporarily fix things, and I enjoy doing so. I ran my own internal phone line in the house. I do know how to change the oil in my car, although I choose not to do so. I put in and take out the window A/C units every year. I did the wall treatments in two of the rooms in our house. If we had the money, I'd have the entire house renovated. I'd figure out how to do plumbing etc. I'm NOT the girlie girl afraid to break a nail... yet at the same time, I kinda am.
Lastly... I'm a mom.
--- interestingly enough, I do NOT own a mug or t-shirt that claims I'm the best mom ever --- So, I suppose it's possible that I'm not the best mom, but it's what I love to "do" the most!
I googled it and didn't find anything Mike. Are you still looking?
no clue, but I found a few youtube videos for it... maybe another really awesome member can figure it out if you're still looking Cork. Here's one link:

Welcome to Chordie Darlene! Did you figure it out, or are you still having issues/questions? Feel free to ask, and don't feel silly... we've all been beginners to the site as well as guitar and this is a great group of folks here at Chordie.

Happy birthday to everyone who has a birthday this year!
Congratulations to those who are celebrating right now.
- Zurf
That's one way to make sure you don't miss anyone ... I'm with Zurf, Happy Birthday to anyone and everyone having a Birthday this year!
Good to see you pop in here Lena! I wish I could help, no dobro's here though. Come back again soon, perhaps someone's working on it already!
Good tips above! I'll third justinguitar.com as well. Remember, your fingers will hurt so just slow down a little but keep at it until the callouses are built up and you'll be grooving along in a couple months! Welcome to chordie!
Happy pre-b.day Nao!
Zurf, you're going to gain back all that weight you lost by having all these birthday celebrations! LOL!
