ABWH    "Birthright"    Japan, 1989

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SifyjnFYeKM

Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman, and Steve Howe are 4/5's of the classic YES lineup. They could well have released this concert DVD as YES, excepting that absent bassist Chris Squire owned the rights to the name at the time. It wouldn't be the first time that some squabbling amongst band members has complicated things. Nevertheless, this concert represents some of the group's finest work, and incorporates some of their older classic material, with their newer, fresher music at the time. Although the concert was filmed in Japan in September 1989, the DVD wasn't released until late-1993:

NOTE: This is from the same concert as yesterday's "Tuesday's Flying Fingers" submission.

Yes, the "F" is often a challenge, and the exercise given above (C > F > C > F, etc.) is a great one.

Another thing that may help, is changing the angle of the guitar neck to your body. Try raising the neck upwards so that it forms a steeper angle to your body, instead of sticking almost straight out to the side. This allows your whole hand and forearm to have a more comfortable / natural position on the fretboard. It's also helpful to hold the body of the guitar slightly tipped back towards you. You'll notice that all classical guitarists hold their guitar in this way, and it's a much more ergonomic position ... like this:

This was pointed out to me years ago, and by allowing the fretting hand to take a more natural angle to the fretboard, a whole lot of things get much easier ... including the dreaded "F" chord.

Steve Howe   "The Clap / Mood For a Day"   (original compositions)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ZmIFR4Sc0

Howe names a number of guitarists as influences, more notably Chet Atkins as is obvious. In an interview, he said he took from Chet "the idea that one guitarist could play any kind of guitar style." (November 2000)

Needless to say, we are watching the American presidential campaign unfold with great interest.

If Mr. Trump were to win, I can't imagine two "free-world" leaders being any further apart than he and our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This is apart from revealing any personal political leanings or commentary ... they are polar opposites in so many ways.

One observation I've made over the years, is that most political leaders don't speak for most of the people under their governance.

'Nuff said.

I was delighted to see that Manchester United have signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He and Mourinho are two of the biggest egos in football ... they deserve each other, and will likely flourish together.

Fascinating stuff, to be sure.

I can't recall a conscious moment in my entire life, when there hasn't been a tune going in my mind. Sometimes it'll get audible, and I'll be singing, humming, or whistling it. Heard or unheard ... the music is always there. It might be something I've heard recently or not, something I play or don't, and even something I like or dislike. The one constant is the presence of music.

That book sounds like a "must read", DE ... thanks for telling us about it.

Go Wales! I agree with TIG that a Wales ~ Iceland final would be terrific.

I was at a concert in the mid-70's, and the main act was Nazareth. In a mismatch of towering proportions, the organizers had Seals & Crofts as the openers!

http://agtcs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Bill-Gates-Head-Scratcher.png

Good band, but definitely not aimed at a raucous Nazareth audience. They managed 2 1/2 songs before we collectively (about 10,000 in attendance) booed them off the stage. They were midway through "Summer Breeze", and we wanted "Hair of the Dog".

Another way to make music ... never a bad thing. Tuning a rig like that must be anguish.

An elderly aunt we used to visit (when I was a kid) had one of these. She would always haul it out and serenade us, and I recall that it was barely better than horrible. Her playing and timing were awful, and her voice sounded like a grackle.

For unfinished wood necks, I prefer to keep them clean and untreated. A mild solution of white vinegar and warm water removes skin oils & salts, or a quick wipe with Murphy's Oil Soap works well ... very sparingly. For painted necks (enamels, nitro-cellulose, lacquer, etc.) I like a bit of Armor All once in a while. Keeps them clean and smooth.

Three Friends    "Alucard"    Paris, 2014

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqjl9SmOgNE

Most will readily recognize the name "Alucard", which was used in the 1943 film "Son of Dracula", and is obviously Dracula spelled backwards. Actor Lon Chaney introduced himself by this title, and we all know where that went. I think the vocal arrangement really captures the old horror movie drama from those classic B&W days.

Another enjoyable piece by Michael, with some innovative percussion ideas to capture some of the song's elements.

Good question, and I don't have a complete answer for you. I only use single drop D for a few songs, and "Walk Away Renee" isn't one I've tried. There is version Chordie's engine has found, which appears to be in standard tuning:

Happy NAD!

The Valvetronix are a very nice series of amps. I had VT80, which my brother now has. Part of his drum kit has some electronic Roland components, so they're running through it now. Nice find ... I hope you never get tired of it, but wheel see about that over time. Just be sure to tread softly.

Thanks for this.

It would be great to be able to attend concerts like that, and stay in touch firsthand with favorite groups & musicians. I'm happy for you, UJB, that you have the opportunity to do this.

Is this the group Dead & Company that came out of the former Grateful Dead? Would love to hear more about it, especially what you do with them! That's awesome stuff, UJB.

Now that's cool ...

A whole bunch of creativity with some basic instruments. Love it! She's got a super voice, and that amazing groove on the standup bass moves it all along so smoothly. Gotta say, MKM, I'm really loving your choices in this weekly feature. Thanks for stepping up and staying with it.

How are getting along with your looper, UJB?

I expect it's a lot less intimidating than when it first came out of the box. I'm a real fan of Boss gear, as they seem to have designed it for simplicity and ease of use.

My vote will go for the Boss ME-80, or it's other family members. Most of the other brands have digital screens which require scrolling through, which is time consuming & awkward in a live setting. The Boss has very visible knobs for altering each effect, which can be done quickly and in low light. The foot switches are also larger and easy to use, and not those little buttons. And the effects are very high quality ... like having a bank of their individual stomp boxes right there.
