Way to go Zurf!  I, for one, have battled my weight my entire life and am sooooooo proud of anyone who makes positive strides to get theirs under control.  Any decrease, no matter how small is great and I applaud you for your persistence.  Keep up the efforts for they reward YOU in the end game.

I now have a musical instrument that suits me, but I have yet to find a kayak that would seem suitable for "a little thing" like me!  Ha, all 6'3" and 350 lbs of me!  Just a little thing, huh?   So, I just keep floating in my ten year old Coleman Crawdad flatbottom and dragging it across the riffles.  You didn't need that new guitar anyway Dirty Ed, as you make just wonderful music with what you have!

I still stand by the comment that I don't play well. Just as MKM thinks her voice covers for her picking inadequacies, I think my songs hide my guitar playing shortcomings. Bass Viking will attest that among the guitar players at our smallmouth fishing "rodeos" I wouldn't rate very high. However, I thank everyone for their kind words.  DE

No way am I taking that bait Dirty Ed!  While I must admit to having witnesses some talented folks in the groups we have both been around, YOU, my friend do not take a back seat to anybody.  If you are or have made mistakes, your confidence and your own words so overshadow them that others (especially newbies like me) sit mesmerized by that which you offer both with your playing and especially your original tunes.

By the way, I just got a new book called "Battle Cry of Freedom", a book which chronicles and provides an analysis of the civil war.   See, you even got me studying history for the first time in forty years.  Suffice to say, when I grow up, I want to be like Dirty Ed!  LOL

I am so envious and sorry that I didn't try to make it to this with what seems like ALL OF YOU FINE FOLKS!  Great pictures Amy!  I did make it to a fishing rodeo Dirty Ed had here in Ohio and can attest that the time around the "campfire" each night was absolutely amazing, inspirational and educational.  Dirty Ed has some great songs that I am sure he shared; especially Pistol Don!  Glad everybody had a great time.  Wish I had been there!  Maybe another time!  Good job Zurf putting it together.

Good luck with the interview; hope all goes well with your options.  Sounds like deadstring can show you the options in that neck of the woods.

Welcome back aboard!  Get them fingers toughened back up and enjoy your music.  I know someone who purchased what I could best describe as a traveling guitar; a very small bodied instrument that fits in the overhead compartment of a plane as well.  It doensn't have the sounds of bigger instruments, but he claims it keeps him sane and out of trouble on nights when he is out of town.  Maybe you should look into something like that.

Am I the only one from England here???????

From my experience; aren't most of us originally from England or one of your neighboring countries?  LOL  Chordie is such a big family and the internet makes us all neighbors, regardless of the miles between us!

I think it is wonderful!  I also thought about doing what others have said on here about making arrangements and going to local nursing homes and putting on the music for the residents.  My mother-in-law was a resident and many of the folks would really appreciate the entertainment of something like this!  Let us know how, when, where!  You never know who might just show up!  Go get them!

Last week I hosted a camping/fishing/picking get-together on a local stream, similar to the ones Zurf has planned for July and August.  Played from about dark to 2 am Wednesday through Saturday.  The format is similar to the one NELA mentioned - everyone gets a turn and can either play or pass.  If others know the song being played they join in. At times we had as many as 8 guitar pickers, also a couple mandolin players and a harmonica blower. Each evening was different, with Friday night really special.

After rising at 6 am each day, doing a float (with adult beverages being consumed), cooking an evening meal (with adult beverages being consumed) and then playing music until about 2 am (with adult beverages being consumed)....... I was ready to go back to work Monday to rest.

We had a couple dozen campers in attendance, mostly Ohio folks, but a few from MI, KY, PA and VA  showed up to add to the mix.  All-in-all it was a great time. Most of the music was folk/country/bluegrass but a few rock songs managed to sneak in too.

Bass Viking (Big Jim) showed up and easily fit right into the group - I hope he posts to give his impression of the event as it was his first time to join us.

DE

First, hats off to Dirty Ed for all the work he did to put this event on!  I really enjoyed what little time I was able to spend; camped two nights, floated and fished one day and joined in on the jam for two nights.  Although I still consider myself a newbie, I was welcomed openly and after passing a couple times early when it came to me, I then jumped in and did my thing (whatever that is!)  When I first told them to "go ahead" and pass me by until I got comfortable, I was told that I must quit calling people a "Goat Head". I LOVED IT!  Some very talented pickers and musicians graced the presence of all of us.  Dirty Ed is one tremendous songwriter and doesn't give himself enough credit for his talent.  All in all it was a special moment that I relished and wish to do again.  Anytime I can get around others who have talent and let me join in I think I not only learn things, but I grow a little more confident.  Great time; I recommend it to anybody!     "Big Jim"

I still think of myself as a beginner; someone who just wanted to get good enough to entertain myself and my grandkids.  Then I went to an open mic and got kind of caught up in the whole thing.  I continue to pick it up nearly every day and I am getting better, but I still think I am a beginner.

I must be getting a little better because the last few times I have been with others sitting around kind of jamming I am getting more and more comments about how good they think I am doing for no longer than I have been at it.  Bottom line is: I like it!

I love to fish for bass and my high school mascot was a viking, so bass viking.  Somebody else once said it was because I was such a big guy and they called me the big ass viking and it just got shortened to b ass viking.  I actually started using it on a local sports forum and have just stuck with it on most all my internet sites.

Hey Gabby; Welcome to a great site where the folks are always helpful and very few every say anything that isn't positive.  Great to see one of our next generations continuing with the music.  Don't be afraid to ask for help from these fine folks at anytime.  Trouts, Bass, Guppys.......sounds like we have the start of an aquarium going on here on Chordie.   Welcome, Enjoy!  Nice to meet you!

Thanks everybody for the feedback!  I especially like that others who heard it then went and tried it themselves.  I do that alot when I hear what others do.  Maybe we should have a thread where others can do the same song and we can see how others interpret and do the same song.  I learn from watching/listening to others and feedback is always important.  I appeciate everybody's comments!

It has been the wettest spring in history here in Ohio, so while messing with the guitar this morning I came across this song and it kind of summed up my feelings;  who'll stop the rain?   I am still not very good at this, but I do enjoy it as much as any hobby I have.  Let me know what anybody thinks as I am still searching for feedback as to how I am doing.  Thanks for the listen and any responses.

OMG... I don't think I can sing this song without crying!  LOL!  I LOVE this song! Hmmm...
are you playing this?  http://chordie.com/chord.pere/www.guita … 41574.html
I think I could totally pull this one off in a week, I may just have to try it out!  Thank you for sharing!  smile
I do think I'll keep learning the "Leader of the Band" though too.  I have a LOT of songs to work on now.  Here I was in a slump, but no more.

Hey Amy!  Yep, that is exactly what I was playing!  Good Luck, I think it is a great song and would do what you want!

Hey Zurf, if you are using the camper as a remote work area or even just for recreation, you should check with an accountant to see if you could write off the cost of it as a second home or mobile office.  Not sure what work you do of if this would qualify, but it is worth a question to someone who knows about these things.  I remember someone once telling me they did this but not sure of the particulars.  Worth a look-see!

What a great memory to have recorded.  I really loved how your little girl got into it and even your son, camera shy as he was, jumped in on the chorus.  What great fun!  Good job!

From what I have heard of myself, I think I do better following harmonizing with someone else.  Never really ever thought of myself as a vocalist!  It's all fun for me though!

With it being warm and sunny here yesterday,  (upper 50's)  I spent about an hour sitting in the sun with guitar on the front porch playing and just soaking up the rays.  Watched a little football, my Ohio State basketball team and then a little Bluejackets hockey, then, my sisters and brother-in-law came down and we played cards, games etc with some good snacks and some icy cold beverages until the wee hours.

The last few times my grandaughter had been around the house she had asked me to get my guitar out and play some tunes for her.  She seemed to be showing an interest, so I got out my 30 year old Fender accoustic, put a strap and some new strings on it, bought an electronic tuner, packed it all in the case and took it to her for a Christmas present.  Took her a chord chart and showed her just a couple of two chord songs and how to play them.

I am amazed at how responsive she was to this gift, especially when she heard it was my first guitar, kind of passing on a legacy of sorts.  My son says she hasn't hardly put it down since Christmas day.  She posted several times on Facebook about what a great gift I had given her.   She is supposed to come up and stay for a couple of days so "we" can "practice" as she calls it.  I never thought a 13 year old who is hung up on Justin Bieber would get so excited, but I am so glad she it.  I really hadn't had the guitar out of the case for months since I had bought a new guitar earlier this year so I just thought it would be a nice gift and it turns out that it seems like it is.  Just doing my thing to keep the music going and it gives me something else to create some commonality between my grandaughter and I.

Hey CC:  As long as you are enjoying it, why not?  Everybody here had been extremely good and helpful whenever I see anybody needing it.  Alot of us are just beginners or in some continued stage of learning and ask questions all the time.  And yes, we often get a little long-winded too.  Welcome, hope you have a good time with everything and everybody here.  Next to picking up my guitar each day, I make sure I visit this site at least daily, if not more often.  Enjoy!
Bass Viking     or     Big Jim     or    whatever,    just don't call me late to dinner!

As a new guitarist I think you will find a wealth of information and a tremendous amount of support from those on this site.  Don't be afraid to ask anything because it is pretty likely that somebody on here knows the answer and will share their experiences.   I only have been trying to play for about a year or so and still find everyone here very helpful.   Welcome aboard!

Proud of you two for doing something that I have needed to do for a long time; losing weight.  I never seem to be able to "get started" or to be able to "maintain" any type of routine.  Hats off to you guys for what you are doing.  I hope you keep it up.
