Plastic surgery for the sake of vanity has to be one of the most decadent indulgences of the modern Effluent society. And those who make money from it are no more than medical prostitutes. They should take up guitar playing and sing badly, and get over themselves. If you're ugly and can make music you'll be happy!

I loved Split Enz in the 70's - saw them in concert in 73(?), loved the over the stop stage antics and gear - but then i was stoned as well at the time .
Still like the Finn bros music.

MELLOW YELLOW by Donovan
"Electrical banana is going to be a sudden grace
Electrical banana is bound to be the very next phase"

It beats me - but then its from the era when everyone was stoned

I don't mind tuning the 6 string by ear, but the 12 string is a nightmare. I know the principal is the same, but timewise its just faster and more accurate to use a tuner, and i believe i have a good ear for pitch.

upyerkilt - as you say, here in NZ its always soccer for the round ball. Football here is rugby, which is the national religion after taking the piss out of Aussies. It was a national day of mourning when we got booted out of the World Cup, the only consolation was SO WERE THE AUSSIES.

Hey Doc! Like my little saying below says: War never decides who is right only who is left. Imagine if all those colonial wars had a different result....the Irish musical Riverdance is a great illustration of how the music from different parts of the world are often intertwined in their origins and influences. I'm in New Zealand which was settled by Polynesians, discovered by the Dutch, claimed by the English, and now a smorgasbord of everything else. We are what our history has given us, including our music

isnt it funny how different guitars haev a diffent take on diffent chords. a D on the 12 string is magic because of the  in your face octave resonance, but on my 6 the Em is my favourite cos its soft and bluesy. Good subject - never thought of having favourite chords before. probably a bit like favourite keys to sing in - do you match your guitar to your voice or yur voice to your favourite key to play?

It is somewhat unfair to compare vocal qualities of todays singers with 30-40 years ago. Alot of the diff lies in the technolgy of sound production today that enhances, blends, reduces and falsifies true vocal ability. The early days were all about raw talent, uncluttered by the techo guys. Same goes for instrumental sound.

Mine was an Angelica acoustic, that i bought off a flatmate in '76, she and i played well together for about 5 years, till one day she fell under a passing car. I cried the day the music died.

I love Runrig, for that awsome celtic rock/folk blend.I saw them at Stirling castle in 2004(?) but sadly missed their Loch Ness concert lasy year. Being down in NZ makes a trip over there a wee bit costly.

I'm trying persuade them to a tour down under with some of their folky stablemates they gig with, but no luck yet.

Dunedin New Zealand, Aotearoa in the mother tongue, land of the long white cloud, 4 million people, a few Australians and 50 million sheep. We are upside down on this planet earth which provides and interesting perspective on what goes on...

I too am a 12 fan. they can produce that big acoustic resonance some songs need. They don't suit all types of or music oe styles of playing - not so good for picking since you have twice as many strings that are close together. Tuning and restringing is also more of a hassle , but hey! it's defintely worth it.   great fro playing some of that great music with 12 string accompaniment such as Pink fLOYD.

A great way to "condition" your fingers for instant but smooth hardness - lick the fingertips them place them on the surface of a hot iron until you friggin can't stand it or they are well done!

Hi, I'm a 50 something who has played a variety of accoustic guitars, none of them hugely expensive, and agree its practice, enthusiasm and getting your own style that suits your instrument, that enables you to get a good sound, not the big dollars! I've had an old Vester electic accoustic for many years that had a warm resonance, and I've just bought a Walden 12 string for that added something a 6 just can't do for some music.
