Jim, Is it better to stink at a  singing or sing at a stinking? smile

But one thing you definitely don't stink at is thinking. More specifically, turning thinking into singing, sometimes with the help of another great "thinker", our  brotha Phill! Together, you two musical thinkers churn out hit after hit: you with the lyrics and he with the music.

I find myself eagerly awaiting the next collaboration of our own "Lennon/McCartney" and wishing for a cd the way some folks wait for the next novel by Lincoln and Child.

I know, I know. I'm just a drummer, (so what do I know?) but I 'd love it if you two would exploit this talent you two have and create a portfolio, make a Kickstart® page and start producing! Too late in life? You're kidding me, right? Morgan Freeman was in his early 50's when he starred as the chauffeur in "Driving Miss Daisy", so there goes that argument.

There are others on our site just like you two and the same goes for them - for all  of you. So much talent and the rest of the world just waiting to hear it and have it shared with them! Wouldn't be bad for Chordie® either. So get up off your duffs and get going! smile

Your one-man cheering section,

Bill

Thansks, Doug and everyone for the advice and votes of confidence. I spoke with "She Who Must Be Obeyed" (Dondra) and she reminded me (gently) that I had promised her a set of earrings, so I guess the software will have to wait a bit, but I sure want to give it a run for the money. I just hope there aren't any additional items I will need to purchase in order to run it on my machine!

I have already chosen a simple tune as a demo. It's an old mac Davis song called "Hard To Be Humble", and what I thought I would do is sing it without the mechanical help and then with the software, and then post it on SoundCloud and let y'all watch and hear it.

Thanks again, my Brothas!

I sometimes go off-key in the middle of a song.

While it only happens about 99.9% of the time, it does happen, and I've been toying with the idea of getting one of those plug-ins that mess with one's voice to keep it "in tune". The one I am looking at is called "Waves Tune Real Time" and is very affordable, but I am wondering what happens if I'm recording myself singing and playing guitar. I suspect one cannot do this, and I'd like someone here to corroborate it.

When I first begin a song, I will hum along with the chord until I am sure I have myself "on-key", and then I begin to play and sing.

I( don't know if the cause is the loss of my cognitive memory function (due to my dementia) or something else, but more often than not, I will veer off-key somewhere within the tune which just wrecks the whole thing. I mean, I can't just stop playing and hum, can I? smile

Okay, so that's part one of this post. Part two is the fact that some (maybe all) of you would consider this cheating. I know. I consider it cheating as well and it bothers me because at least one of my friends here says he can tell when a person uses one of these devices, and if he thinks of it as cheating then that is why it bothers me.

But it doesn't bother me all that much, and here's why: I'm not really looking to make any money off my caterwauling, and if I can improve it and make it more "palatable" to the human ear, then why shouldn't I?

I know the ultimate decision regarding the use of this $49.00 plug-in will be mine to make , but being that y'all are "family", I do care what you think.

So what do you think?

Thanks

When that abrupt ending happened, my imagination provided one second's silence before the crowd's exuberance at what they'd just experienced "brought down the house". In my addled mind, Mr. Dawes received a standing ovation that lasted a good five minutes and he was brought back for that many encores. I know it's an overused adjective, but in this instance, I don 't believe any of my friends would argue my use of it because that word fits that artist's performance and to hell with the synonyms.

I agree with you about the  fingers as well. As I have stated before, a guitarist with fingers such as those would have no trouble navigating his way around a drum kit. It's as if each of those digits has a brain  of its own.

Awesome choice TF wink

Not really sure about this one, my friend. I only know Marillion through  "Kayleigh" which was the hit I heard for the first time in Germany and which I liked very much. Reading from the comments below the tune on YT, they were compared by one person to Pink Floyd and Genesis which I don't really agree with, but..........I think what would help is for me to expose myself......... (no, not that kind! smile ) to more music from this group, so I can at least critique them intelligently.

For now, I like the lyrics and the drama I hear and see from the lead singer, and they're musically tight - I just can't say I like them, TF. For me, even though I can't explain it, a lot of things have to come together and here they just don't.

Sorry. I know these comments are a bit convoluted, but it's the best I can do .

Ever watch a young musician do a cover of a classical work and he or she just "nailed" it to the point that you wish the original composer could hear it so you could watch the hilarious reaction? Such is the case with this tune. Think of that scenario as you watch and listen.

I wonder if "Der Maestro" might run out of the concert hall screaming, "Ach Du Lieber!!!!!!" ? smile

Thanks, BGD. The first time I heard it, I had just finished a scale exercise and when I realized the sounds almost matched, I "trial 'n error'd" it until I found the same notes. smile

........ could you give the following link a click, fast forward to nearly the end and listen to the music you will hear?

I hope you can get YouTube and play this because for some reason I have convinced myself that the lead guitar on the "outro" music of the clip is just playing a scale. Is he?

Thanks!

Just ordered a scissors boom arm and pop filter, after watching a YT video on set-up. If I'm going to record some stuff to post on SoundCloud, might as well do it right, right? Cost for both, just over $20.00 USD on eBay with free shipping. Yeah, I know I could have used a pair of  Dondra's panty hose,  but I think the filter would work better. Besides, I'd like it to look as professional as possible and those two legs of the hose drooping down either side of the mic wouldn't do much for the aesthetics. smile

Bill

Oh ... THAT's how you're supposed to use the pantyhose for pop muffling. Now I know why my wife says I look like a burglar when using a microphone.

Thanks, Bill !!! lol

Glad you got a laugh, my friend! smile

"The frets are splayed"........... They looked straight on the video, but he explained that with saying it's a kind of "optical illusion". I didn't get why the frets needed to be splayed. Wouldn't that affect the tuning of the guitar? I.e. if you pressed down the string at the normal position and then slid your finger toward the other side, wouldn't you get a difference in tone? Anyone?

Thanks

I put two on lay-a-way. One for the Fender accoustic and another one for the Les Paul.

I dropped by the local pawn shop earlier in the week and asked if he had just cases for sale, and you would have thought the whole shop was full of sunlight from the guy's smile. Apparently, the people who buy guitars there don't always need cases, because he showed me a room full of them!  I got both cases - in very nice shape - for $80.00. Am I paying too much?

Still looking for one to fit the Rogue bass. It's currently in a gig bag waiting for a trip to the music store for some flat-wounds and a set-up. It barely fits the gig bag and the zipper is hard to close, but at least it has that much protection.

Thanks

Classical Guitar! Where you been ........ Haydn????

I happen to have your version of "Classical Gas", and although I've never timed it, I sure do love listening to it!

What I am seeing is between the 11th and 12th fret, guys. It's a strip of some kind, maybe? Jim's got it, I think: just a fret marker. There are some other markings near the sound hole; a cross and some other marks, but I was mainly interested in the wide "strip" between the frets.

Thanks, my friends!

I've been seeing some of these from 2010 or so and was wondering what's going on with that?

Not complaining because some are interesting to read. I'm just curious as to how they get resurrected. Searrh engine questions?

I think I could pick out that giggle of his anywhere, TF. That man just loves to play guitar!

What's that thing below the 11th fret? If I've ever seen it elsewhere, it must not have grabbed my attention enough to comment upon it.

Also, did you catch that little bit of "Play guitar like Tommy" spam under the video and before the comments? To that I would have to say "Yeah, right." smile

Thanks for another great feature, my friend!

Boy! That would be a lot of standing on my head, Joe. smile  It actually happens right at the START of the scroll: goes up one and then starts down as it's supposed to. It may be a minor inconvenience to some folks, but to me, it sends me right up the wall (right-side up - up the wall!) smile .

Some of my stuff comes from dreams. I once kept a notepad by my bed so if I woke up and the dream of the song was still intact, I'd quickly makes some notes, turn over and go back to sleep - hoping to get back into the dream if it was a good one, dreading getting back into it if it was a bad one.

Next morning, I'd wake up - remembering that I had written this down, open the notepad, look at it and say to myself, "What in the _____ is this_____????" smile

Only partially kidding. That would happen sometimes. Most of the other times I could get a verse or two written. I've only ever completed maybe two songs from dreams.
