Yep. When it is tabbed in that manner you only play one string. If you are meant to play more than one string at the same time it would show the numbers like this, one above the other.....

--------- meaning you would fret the two strings at the fourth and play them.

After a few lessons you'll have the basics under your belt and will pick up a lot of things yourself anyway. A decent tutor will help you avoid any bad habits or mistakes you will be making along the way though.
I get one lesson every week, £15 for 45 mins one on one teaching which I reckon is decent value (especially since I'm the last pupil of the day and usually wind up getting over an hour!) <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile"> For me it's been invaluable cos I probably would have chucked it as soon as I came to my first major hurdle...which was the F chord...My tutor showed me a simple cheat too overcome it in the short term and I kept playing on.
I guess it's an individual choice, but I would go with the tutor and still try and pick up as much as I could elsewhere as well.
Assuming that Bass works in the same way as a six string the E will be the top string as you play, i.e the one nearest your chin (hope it's not too close though).
For the first part you would fret at the 5th on the top string, play it once, then fret the 1st string and play that one. Drop down a string and fret at the 3rd fret play it and back up too the E string at the 3rd fret. The X3 means you do all that 3 times before going on to the next part. Try it with your pinkie for the 5th, Index finger for the 1st and ring finger for the two frets at the 3rd.
So; E is the string nearest yer chin, G is the string nearest yer thing (assuming yer a bloke) <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_wink.gif" border=0 alt="Wink"> You only need to play one string at a time for this example and sorry, but nope, I can't read a rhythmn there.....only cos I don't know the song though.
Have a listen too the song and I'll bet you can work out the rhythmn now you know where your fingers are going.

The numbers you see represent the fret position for your finger on the string indicated. e.g if there is a number 5 like so ----5---- you should press down on the 5th fret, a number ----3---- press down on the 3rd fret and play that string. I wouldn't know how to play that particular song though.

The chord I was looking for is Em/A. Well, it is in the song where I borrowed it from! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing"> It's basically one finger on the 2nd fret of the D string, playing all strings except the low E.

Yep, I've had a look through this site. As has been mentioned, a good chunk of it is free although you could pay a fee and get more lessons etc. Not sure exactly how much more you get if you do part with your hard earned, but from what I've seen of the site so far I have too say it is well worth checking out......I mean I've just learned a little bit of The Clash - Should I stay or should I go.....that's got to make it worthwhile.<img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

At the moment I've got Iggy And The Stooges, Oasis and Pink Floyd in the cooking pot along with the an assortment of riffs that I'm monkeying around with; White Stripes, U2, SLF, The Doors, Wolfmother, OCS, The Cure. Basicaly whatever my tutor gives me too learn at the moment.

This will only be about the 7th time I've seen 'em (first one was the last year Henry played with 'em, '89 or '90 I think?), every one at the Barras apart from one a few years ago at the Grand Hall in Killie. Like you say, they just get better every year.

I've only been playing around 9 months Ash and could never figure out strumming patterns. All the advice given on the forum regarding this problem has always been too listen to the song and practise. Pretty soon it gets easier to work out. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">
A good piece of advice I've read on here a few times as well is; unless you want a faithfull reproduction of the song the strum pattern will only be your interpretation of the tune and therefore maybe not as important to 'nail' as you might be thinking.

It's a Mexican Strat that I play and I have to say I've found it very good value for money. It plays well, stays in tune pretty good and is comfortable to play whether it's hanging round my neck or resting on my lap.
Dunno if you could get a better one for £400 or not(or are you talking dollars?), I daresay you could if you looked around, but in my humble opinion the Mexican Strat is a damned fine guitar for the money. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">
