Howdy all....possibly a daft post but I'm putting it up anyway. Basically there's a song I'm dying to learn (Shine by David Gray) and it's apparently played in "Open E" tuning.

According to the guy who's tabbed it, the tuning should be:    E B E G# B E

Now, I'm not sure where to begin with this. I play everything in standard EADGBE and I'm the king of the capo. However I really want to move on and understand hpw to use other tunings.

If anyone can provide an idiots guide on how to retune to this format it'd be much appreciated by this idiot tongue

I know this may be in the wrong forum or something but just wanted to let you guys see this chap. Especially my American and Canadian friends who may not have heard of him as yet......in the same way that plenty of Brits probably haven't either tongue

The name of the act is: Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly

He's fantastic in my opinion and I've got a couple of his albums which I can't recommend enough. I also saw him at T in The Park last summer and his performance was so moving he actually brought a tear to me eye (although I had been overdoing it a wee bit and was slightly "Tired and emotional").

Hope you enjoy. Would love to hear what you guys think of it.

Aye, yeah he does record in his bathroom. Guess the acoustics are just better in there.

As for my latest Youtube offering, I'd used quickcapture and it didn't really work that well. It chopped about a 2mins off the end of the song so I just deleted it.  Got a new laptop and I haven't quite sussed out the webcam and / or what best mics to use etc. Will get it sorted in due course and stick some more songs on there. Got a few bursting to get out. Including a David Sneddon classic for all you Paisley minded folks out there :-p

Holy moley guys....seems I'm not the only one who likes this song. It's received over 1000 hits on Youtube in 8 days....maybe not that many in the scheme of things, but as far as my songs on Youtube go, this is epic.

A huge thank you to all of you who have looked / rated / commented. I hope you liked the song as much as I enjoyed playing it.

Errrrm...lowering the tone a bit but, my fave:

How do man of many names 8-)

Just checked out your ourstage song and liked it a lot. Catchy and very easy to listen to. Liked the build up at about 2.20....very good.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work there too. I've added myself as a fan (as I suggest everyone else should too) so good luck and keep on writing

.....talk about life imitating art!!

I'd written this song and was feeling suitably smug about my fictional writings and then I bump into....my ex...in the street....not seen her for 2 years (after 10 years together).

Glad to report she didn't "walk on by" but methinks there may be an extra verse to follow at some point tongue

I'm going to go write a song about winning the lottery now wink

I take it you've searched for the song on here and found the tab etc? I found that pretty helpful. It's not actually too difficult, you just pick between a couple of strings at a time and the changes aren't too controversial either.

All the best.

Found this guys......hopefully it helps.

G
Closed off from love
I didn’t need the pain
Cadd9
Once or twice was enough
And it was all in vain
G
Time starts to pass       D
Before you know it you’re frozen

G
But something happened
For the very first time with you
Cadd9
My heart melts into the ground
Found something true
G
And everyone’s looking round
                   D
Thinking I’m going crazy

G
But I don’t care what they say
I’m in love with you
C add9
They try to pull me away
But they don’t know the truth
G
MY heart’s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
D
You cut me open and I

G
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
C add9
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
G
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
D
You cut me open

G
Trying hard not to hear
But they talk so loud
C add9
Their piercing sounds fill my ears
Try to fill me with doubt
G
Yet I know that the goal
                   D
Is to keep me from falling

G
But nothing’s greater
Than the rush that comes with your embrace
C add9
And in this world of loneliness
I see your face
G
Yet everyone around me       D
Thinks that I’m going crazy, maybe, maybe

G
But I don’t care what they say
I’m in love with you
C add9
They try to pull me away
But they don’t know the truth
G
My heart’s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
D
You cut me open and I

G
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
C add9
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
G
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
D
You cut me open

G
And it’s draining all of me
C add9
Oh they find it hard to believe
G
I’ll be wearing these scars
D
For everyone to see

G
I don’t care what they say
I’m in love with you
C add9
They try to pull me away
But they don’t know the truth
G
My heart’s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
D
You cut me open and I

G
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
C add9
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
G
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love

You cut me open and I

G
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love

I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love

What a brilliant expression!!

On the topic of cleaning clothing I did hear a good money saving tip.

Basically, take your shirts etc to the charity shop and donate them. They will then have them washed and ironed. You can subsequently buy them back for 50p / 50c which will work out considerably cheaper than the dry cleaner!! wink

I've posted things like this before so apologies for boring anyone.....but I'm looking for similarly minded music geeks (I'm pretty confident there are a few of them on here) to share this with.

Basically one of my friends sets me little musical challenges every so often of songs to learn. Her most recent one to me on Tuesday was to learn "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" by The Script.

I've since done this but the biggest thing is that this song got me genuinely excited....I was cursing the fact I had to go to work or go to bed because all I wanted to do was play it some more and finally nail that next bit that had been throwing me and so on. I looove when a song gets you like this. Last one was  KT Tunstall song....but this one was unexpected as it's a bit sugary for my tastes normally. Comes across well on acoustic though and I think it's maybe one of my best covers now. It's definitely going in the set list for my next BBQ.

Have a look if you like but unlike some of my other posts, this isn't about self promotion, more about sharing the feeling of when a song gets in your head and you just HAVE to play it and play it!! Great fun!

I agree about the trial and error to find chords but I would also suggest you make a rough vocal recording of how you want the melody to sound whilst you still have it in your head....I quite often find that when I start looking for the right chords I lose track of the original melody a bit. Not always the worst thing and quite an organic way to develop a song but always worth keeping one eye on your original idea.

Ooh, Chris Martin - Coldplay...he's another one!

P.S I actually like Jay-Z and Kanye West.....think they're two of the more talented members of the RAP fraternity and bring a slightly different slant to rap music. Again, maybe just my opinion, but that's what's fun about music.....

I may shake the walls of Chordie, but on hearing how they behaved at a recent Scottish festival I would like to suggest the 'Pistols. John Lydon et al.....apparently demanded china cups for their tea and refused to walk 20 yards from the backstage area to the stage and demanded land rovers be brought in to transport them.

That's pretention of the highest order. Not very punk either. Idiots!!

As for Bono and the Gallaghers.....I wouldn't say they're especially pretentious although I can see why some don't like them. I guess it depends on your perspective as to when someone crosses from "Showman" to pretentious halfwit.

Speaking of which.....step forward Jonny Borrell of Razorlight. What an idiot that guy is!!!

A wee song I've written about a chance meeting with your ex. Nothing kicks you in the whatnots like that sort of situation so I tried to capture that in this song. You can judge whether or not I managed it.

Simple chords although there are one or two wee hammers in the actual song but you can figure that out for yourselves wink

Let me know what you think. The finished product (or early incarnation of it anyway) is on my Myspace page.

Great song Bud...But I've got to say I would've gone with My Little Angel instead that one blew me away. Nicely done!!!!

Cheers Geo, very kind of you. That was one of the first songs I ever wrote. Think it was actually the 2nd that ever made it to a finished article. As such I find it a bit old and maybe a bit simplistic, although that's maybe a good thing.....who knows?!

Anyway, glad you liked and thanks for the nice comment.
