Here's my version of the song. It's a different style from Roger's but I think they both express the same sentiment.

Hey Roger - Thanks for letting me be the inspiration for this.  What a great song!

Thanks you all - I have to put it off for another day due to a late night at the DC United game (2-1 win over Chivas of Guadalajara). But I have chords that I will put down tomorrow.

Hey Zurf - nice to know I have a neighbor here. My favorite walk is just south of big meadow at the Bear Fence Mt. Rock Scramble....such a great view. If you look at my current picture at my myspace page (www.myspace.com/jeffgilpin) you'll see a picture of me and the wife sitting at the highest point of the scramble there.

Take care and chords tomorrow I promise,

I finally added the chords to the lyrics. Again, this song is about an experience a few years ago I had at one of my favorite places in the world, Shenandoah National Park. It doesn't need too much explaining other than this did really happen to me. I neglected to mention that when I go I tend to go with my family but take off ahead and lose the rest of them which is what happened on the day this is about. I hope you all like it.

The Day Hike By Jeff Gilpin

Intro

[C] [D] [Em]

Verse 1

The [Em]path lay ahead [D]off through the trees

[Em]Over and around the [D]bend

So I [Em]followed without [D]thinking

[C]Wondering [D]where it would [Em]end

Verse 2

[Em]I was focused on my [D]motion

[Em]Each step followed by [D]another

As [Em]nature paid no at[D]tention

[C]To this [D]solitary [Em]stroller

Verse 3

[C]Gradually as [D]time passed [Em]on [D]

I [C]started ob[D]serving the [Em]setting [D]

My [G]head [D]cleared from distant [C]worries

Like a [C]fog that's [D]dissi[Em]pating

Verse 4

[Em]Yes I was on a [D]forest path

A [Em]path so safe and [D]true

And [Em]if I stayed here [D]I would be safe

But [C]if I [D]left who [Em]knew

Verse 5

It [Em]was a peculiar [D]decision

To [Em]leave the trail and its [D]safety

[Em]But leave the [D]trail I did

[C]Though the [D]reason why es[Em]capes me

Verse 6

[C]Maybe I [D]saw a [Em]flower [D]

Or per[C]haps a [D]singing [Em]bird [D]

But [G]I went [D]off the [C]safer trail

And [C]I [D]didn’t feel per[Em]turbed

Verse 7

After [Em]15 maybe 20 [D]minutes

[Em]I finally looked a[D]round

And [Em]didn’t recognize [D]where I was

[C]Nor were there [D]people to be [Em]found

Verse 8

So I [Em]walked in one di[D]rection

Which [Em]I was pretty sure would [D]lead

[Em]Back to the path I had [D]ventured off

[C]It was a [D]great plan in[Em]deed

Verse 9

[C]Soon I found a [D]well worn [Em]path [D]

[C]That I [D]thought looked fa[Em]miliar [D]

So [G]I started [D]walking [C]down it

[C]Knowing surely [D]soon I’d [Em]remember

Verse 10

I [Em]hadn’t traveled [D]too far along

When [Em]much to my wonder[D]ment

I [Em]saw a Bobcat [D]padding away

A[C]head on this [D]same path I [Em]went

Verse 11

[Em]I just stared at this [D]feline

[Em]As it traveled out of [D]sight

[Em]Such an unexpected [D]moment

That [C]somehow [D]lifted my [Em]fright

Verse 12

[C]I eventually [D]followed the [Em]path [D]

[C]Down to the [D]feeder [Em]road [D]

[G]Then back to [D]where I [C]parked my car

[C]Where my back[D]pack I did un[Em]load

Verse 13

[Em]As I sat there [D]by my car

I [Em]thought about my [D]day

A[Em]bout my getting [D]off the path

Where [C]some felt [D]I should have [Em]stayed

Verse 14

But [Em]if I had stayed [D]on that path

[Em]I never would have [D]seen

A [Em]little glimpse of [D]forest life

As [C]if from [D]out of a [Em]dream

Verse 15

[C]Life’s a [D]little [Em]like that [D]

[C]One path [D]safe and se[Em]cure [D]

And [G]other paths [D]going [C]who knows where

[C]No one [D]really knows for [Em]sure

Verse  16

[Em]I’ve had my time [D]on both paths

And [Em]both had their [D]highs and lows

[Em]Not at all what I ex[D]pected

[C]Back when my [D]life started to [Em]go

Verse 17

So [Em]all cooled off and [D]rested

And [Em]filled with thoughts such as [D]these

I [Em]got up and headed up the [D]trail again

For a[C]nother [D]walk amongst the [C]trees [Em]

This song was just a bit of fluff I put together before going to bed tonight just because I sleep better after writing a song for some reason. Nothing to serious but a fun little song or at least it was fun for me. Enjoy!

Putting off Shopping By Jeff Gilpin

September 23rd, 2007

Intro

[C] [F] [C] [G] [G7]

Verse 1

[C]Looking at an empty socket

In my overhead [F]light

I got nothing much [C]better to do

Home on a Saturday [G]night

I [C]might go get a few light bulbs

Change out the ones that are [F]dark

So I might [C]take a midnight [G]stroll

Down [F]to the convenient [C]mart [C7]

Chorus 1

Where I could get [F]light bulbs

Or some cold [C]brew

Some [G]nacho chips

Or a [C]diet mountain [C7]dew

A well cooked [F]hot dog

Or a maga[C]zine

Or I guess I[G]don’t

[F]Have to get a [C]thing

Verse 2

Last [C]time I replaced the light bulbs

The place was much too [F]bright

And I really only [C]need them on

Early mornings or at [G]night

So [C]if I sleep in and

go to bed at [F]dusk

I could [C]go for years without [G]light bulbs

And I’ll [F]do it if I [C]must [C7]

Chorus 2

Because I have [F]Peanut butter crackers

I have [C]Teabags and honey

Some [G]stomach ache medicine

For when [C]I’m feeling [C7]funny

[F]Tissue for my nose

And [C]some for my bathroom

I’ll [G]not need to go shopping

At [F]least not anytime [G]soon[C]

Thanks Lena and thanks Roger - I will plan on recording this one as well. I have a little list that has seemed to grown a bit so I better get to it before it gets too big.

This is just a comment from a disgruntled yank that can't see his team play when they are on a historic run, or at least it looks like it to me. Leeds United started the season having been relegated from the Championship to League 1. The FA also gave them a 15 point penalty for they start of the season that might have taken the fight out of a lot of teams. Leeds United has gone on to win the first 7 matches to go from minus 15 to positive 6, that’s a 21 point turn around in the minimal amount of time. I hear nothing of their run over here in the states but is it news in England? If you do not follow football and for some reason there appears to be a little disdain for football fans in some corners of the UK and to those who feel that way please ignore this question but for those of you who do follow football let me know. Even better are there any Leeds Fan’s out there?

Hey Daddy - not saying to solve the problems by looking away but to recharge your spirit, or your drive that gets wittled away over time. Kind of like sharpening a dull knife when it needs it if you know what I mean.

Hey Roger - As you know I'm a sucker for story songs and this was a doozy! I think many of us have run into people who like to "Stretch the Truth" from time to time and it usually sucks when they are found out.

Hey Reb - Nice one indeed. It's fun to play fast ...or as fast as I can at least

To make sure I keep from getting burned out at work I have a few activities that I use to lose my worries, my stress and my negativity. Playing the guitar and writing songs are a few these  activities that I call my look aways. This song is about this type of activity and how important looking away is to being productive at work, handling misfortune, and just being happy. Enough preaching, I hope you all like it.

I was plucking around with this tune for the last couple of days when tonight my wife said that she had a headache and asked me to get her some headache medicine.  I did without really thinking about until I sat back later with the guitar and started thinking of this song idea about all the little things we do for one another every day and how they add up. So here you go and I hope you like it.

The Little Things By Jeff Gilpin

[D] [A] [G] [A] [D] [A] [G] [A] [Bm] [A] [G] [A] [A7]

Verse 1

[D]I was coming up the stairs[A] [G]

Just to see if you were awake[A] [D]

You said you had a head ache[A] [G]

Asked me to get you something to take[A] [Bm]

It’d only take a minute[A] [G]

So I went back down[A] [Bm]

Got you water and a pill[A] [G]

Soon you safe and [A]sound[A7]

Chorus 1

It was just a [D]little thing[A]

But it [G]meant a lot to you[A]

Just a [D]little thing[A]

That [G]I was willing to do[A]

It’s the [Bm]little things

That [G]add up to a [A]lot in the [D]end

Verse 2

[D]I woke up late [A] [G]

Just the other day[A] [D]

No time to make sure[A] [G]

I have everything okay[A] [Bm]

You’d made me coffee[A] [G]

Breakfast and my lunch[A] [Bm]

Left me a little note[A] [G]

Saying you loved me a [A]bunch[A7]

Chorus 2

It was just a [D]little thing[A]

But it [G]meant a lot to me[A]

Just a [D]little thing[A]

[G]You did selflessly[A]

It’s the [Bm]little things

That [G]add up to a [A]lot in the [D]end[D7]

Bridge

[Gb]I do them for you without [Bm]thinking

[Gb]Just like you do them for [Bm]me

Those [Gb]little things can turn a [Bm]bad day good

So [G]let’s keep on doing little things and [A]see

Verse 3

[D]Laying in bed[A] [G]

At the end of the day[A] [D]

We’re telling each other[A] [G]

All we have to say[A] [Bm]

Our good news, our worries[A] [G]

The troubles that we have[A] [Bm]

Some are sad some are funny[A] [G]

But I’m sure [A]glad[A7]

Chorus 3

We share the [D]little thing[A]

That [G]happened to us today[A]

Yeah the [D]little thing[A]

[G]That we have to say [A]

But it’s the [Bm]little things

That [G]add up to a [A]lot in the [G]end[A] [D]

Thanks you all. I had the good fortune of playing it for my daughter over the phone and she got a little teary eyed herself due to the song, frustrations at her job and maybe a tad homesickness. Part of getting older I guess is dealing with the seperations that eventually come.

[C] [D] [G] [Bm] [C] [D] [C] [D] [G] [Bm] [C] [D] [G]

Verse 1

[G]There’s not a lot I wouldn’t [Bm]do

To try and take care of [C]you

Whenever you want me [D]to

[G]I’ll try to be here when you [Bm]call

No job would be too [C]tall

Just let me help you through it [D]all

Chorus

But [C]you’re [D]out on your own far a[G]way

And though I [Bm]talked to you yester[C]day

I didn’t have the words to [D]say

That [C]I’m [D]missing you being a[G]round

Since [Bm]you’ve been gone I [C]found

I’ll [D]never get tired of [G]you

Verse 2

I [G]know we didn’t always get a[Bm]long

Our wills were both very [C]strong

Saying things we both took [D]wrong

Be[G]cause you are so much like [Bm]me

Both cut from the same [C]tree

If you were here I’m sure you’d a[D]gree

Chorus

But [C]you’re [D]out on your own far a[G]way

And though I [Bm]talked to you yester[C]day

I didn’t have the words to [D]say

That [C]I’m [D]missing you being a[G]round

Since [Bm]you’ve been gone I [C]found

I’ll [D]never get tired of [G]you

Verse 3

[G]Babe, you’ll always be my little [Bm]girl

With your shy smile and your [C]curls

Who I would give the [D]world

[G]Don’t stay away to long from [Bm]home

Though I know you’ve got to [C]roam

From the mountains to seas of [D]foam

Chorus

Where [C]you’re [D]out on your own far a[G]way

And though I [Bm]talked to you yester[C]day

I didn’t have the words to [D]say

That [C]I’m [D]missing you being a[G]round

Since [Bm]you’ve been gone I [C]found

I’ll [D]never get tired of [C]you [D] [G]

Coaches Lament By Jeff Gilpin

September 20th, 2007

Intro

[Dm] [G] [Am] [C] [G] [Em] [C] [Am7] [Dm] [G] [Am] [C] [G] [Em] [Am]

Verse 1

[Dm]You try hard to ex[G]plain

But to [Am]no one else but [C]you

[G]No one else to [Em]blame

Not [C]much more that you could [Am7]do

So you [Dm]sit and think a [G]while

Think of [Am]all you could have [C]done

If [G]you tried a different [Em]style

Then maybe you’d have [Am]won

Chorus 1

But you [Dm]didn’t win

Though [G]no one’s to [Am]blame

At the [Em]end of the day

That’s the way it [C]goes [Am7]

Sometime you [Dm]will win

[G]Sometimes you will [Am]lose

And [Em]what will tomorrow [C]hold

Who [Am7]knows

Verse 2

[Dm]Then a moment of glo[G]ry

[Am]You’re king for the [C]day

[G]Every one’s your [Em]friend

Praising [C]all you have to [Am7]say

[Dm]But as time presses [G]on

The [Am]moment start to [C]fade

[G]Friends start to for[Em]get

You no longer have it [Am]made

Chorus 2

But you [Dm]did win

[G]And you had a moment of [Am]fame

And at the [Em]end of that day

Life was [C]okay [Am7]

The times that you [Dm]win

[G]Are forgotten quickly when you [Am]lose

So [Em]what will tomorrow [C]hold

Who to [Am7]say

Verse 3

[Dm]Enjoy it when it’s [G]good

And [Am]don’t dwell when it’s [C]bad

Try [G]not to get too [Em]happy

Or get [C]lost in being [Am7]sad

Be[Dm]cause it’s not losing or [G]winning

But [Am]passing on the [C]game

Some will [G]get it others [Em]won’t

Don’t go in[Am]sane

Chorus 3

Just try to [Dm]teach them

And [G]some will under[Am]stand

You’ll see the [Em]light

[C]Shine in their [Am7]eyes

[Dm]Some you can’t reach

[G]While others you [Am]can

And [Em]some who[C]knows

May give you a sur[Am7]prise

I Can Do That By Jeff Gilpin

September 19th, 2007

Intro

[G7] [C7] [G7] [D7]

Verse 1

[G7]Look at that guy

[G7]Up on the screen

[G7]He ain’t much more

[G7]Different than me

I can [C7]do that

I can do that standing on my [G7]head

He’s [D7]making a face

Now he’s [C7]walking away

That’s [D7]not much more

Then I [C7]do every day

I can [G7]do that [D7]

Verse 2

[G7]Look at him now

[G7]Trying to look cool

[G7]That’s all I did

[G7]All through high school

I can [C7]do that

And I did that for [G7]years

It [D7]ain’t nothing special

Just [C7]me being me

It’s [D7]nothing I’m not

[C7]Doing now for free

I can [G7]do that [D7]

Bridge

Just [C7]look at all those guys up on the screen up there

They’re [G7]not much different than me

They don’t [C7]sing, they don’t dance, and they don’t play guitar

And use [D7]stand-ins for the dangerous things

Verse 3

So [G7]where are those scouts?

I’m [G7]sitting over here

Just [G7]think of the money

I could [G7]make in a year

I can [C7]do that

That’s what I do every [G7]day

It’s just [D7]walking and talking

And [C7]me being me

I’ll [D7]even be someone else

If they [C7]start paying me

So get [D7]those cameras rolling

And [C7]pretty soon you’ll see

That I can [G7]do that [C7] [D7] [G7]

Thanks guys and yes Roger it's kind of rough to play. So here is how I do it. The first and third lines of the verses are normal tempo but the second and fourth are slowed a bit with the lyrics and then sped up at the end with the FCG. I might have to record it to show you which is not a bad idea since it has been a while. Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

My current favorite is SIRIUS' channel 30 coffee house and XM's Channel 50 the Loft. Both are similiar but SIRIUS' Coffee House is more what I like, singer songwriter stuff. I just traded my sirius with the wife's XM so I may change my "tune" later.

[G]Time and a[D]gain [G]I had [D]to [G]fall

[F]Time [C]and a[G]gain [F] [C] [G]

Thank [G]God I had [D]friends to [G]help through [D]it [G]all

Thank [F]God I [C]had [G]friends [F] [C] [G]

Because when I was [B]down

It got [A]pretty [G]rough

And I didn’t [B]want

To get [A]back [G]up

But thanks to some [D]well placed

Kicks in the [C]butt

I made it back [G]up

Verse 2

Sometimes [G]that’s what it [D]takes [G]to get [D]you [G]through

[F]That’s[C] what it [G]takes [F] [C] [G]

We[G] all make mis[D]takes and [G]I made [D]a [G]few

[F]Or [C]more mis[G]takes [F] [C] [G]

There was a [B]time

I thought[A] I was [G]done

Then a helping [B]hand

Sometimes [A]more than [G]one

Helped me to be [D]smart

When I had been [C]dumb

Now I'm far from [G]done

Bridge

Sometimes [B]on sleepless nights

I think [A]of [G]how it could have [D]gone

I [F]could have headed [C]down the path to des[G]pair

But I [B]chose another path

And I [A]don’t [G]think I got it [D]wrong

But it [A]wasn’t just my choice that [C]helped to led me [A]here

Verse 3

I know [G]who all to [D]thank now [G]I [D]made it this [G]far

[F]Who [C]all to [G]thank [F] [C] [G]

Those [G]who’ve seen me [D]through my [G]dar[D]kest [G]hour

[F]They [C]saw me [G]through [F] [C] [G]

Without their [B]help

I would [A]not be [G]here

Looking a[B]head

Not cowe[A]ring in [G]fear

Because of those [D]friend

Who helped me steer [C]clear

Are the ones I’ll always hold [G]dear[D]

Hey David - I'm not from Texas but my parents are and my mother still lives outside of Austin. I have tons of family in the Houston area as well. Pleased to meet you and I'm looking forward to seeing, hearing and playing some of your music.

Welcome!

Hey James - I was just away on a business trip and decided on leaving the laptop at home so as not to have to carry so much. I wish I had taken my guitar though. I'm glad you liked the song. I'm still spoiled and it's great to be back home with the old ball and chain. smile I need to catch up on all the new song postings. There seems to have been a flood of them since I've been away.
