Way back when I  was teaching myself the chords I found the  2,3,4 easier + it was a quick drop to C, F and D.  I rearly use the 1,2,3 unless Im playing Every Rose Has Its Thorn since its mostly G and G6sus4 (or C major with out the index) or I Hear the Music D and G.  Come to think of it, I dont even think about it now, i just go for what is more comfy with the changeout.

I have a fender 12 and an ovation.Strings are going to be your hit and miss.  my present ones are not to bad. but I will go with silk and steel next.  You will have to bone up your hand strength for barr chords. try just using your 1 and 3 fingers for the root 5ths.  if you look up 12 string tuning tips  and playing hints it will help you out. one trick is to tune a 1/2 step down then put a Capo on the first fret. it will make things easier till you get the strenght built up.  I also like to tune a 1/2 step down and no capo. takes away the ringing in the high B and E strings.  on teh fender, keep an eye on the bridge. some of them have been know to pull loose.  This is because sometimes they glue the bridge on over the topcoat.  not a very good idea.  mine has done that and i have not fixed it yet. i just use my ovation LOLOL.  good luck and look up some gordon lightfoot (capo on the 3rd and 5th fret for a lot of the songs) Oh and get a capo for a 12 string, it will make a differance. Also Tom Petty and the Eagles sound great on a 12.

OH and as mentioned, take it and get it set up. it will make a big differance!

I suppose that when a guitar maker is making a guitar, those with lovely inlays and gold hardware and a stunning finish my well be far more expensive. Maybe the extra expense allows the maker more time to make a special instrument because he won't need to make 10 guitars in the time he can spend on this one. On the other hand if the basic design and process is excellent to begin with, a great guitar will still be produced. Leo Fender is the man to thank for great guitars we can afford to own.

The other thing to concider is technology.  I think it was Peavy who was one of the first guys to realize the benefit of CNC production for solid guitar bodies.  As quoted :  Peavey embraced state-of-the-art technology to produce guitars at lower cost, becoming the first manufacturer to use computer-controlled machinery to turn out guitar bodies and precision parts. Years later, Peavey recalled, "When we announced that we were making guitar bodies on computer-controlled machinery, some of the most prominent names in the industry said, 'Impossible. Everybody knows you can't make guitars with a computer.' That was a rather simplistic attitude, we thought, because, in fact, we weren't making guitars on computers. We were using ... computer-controlled machines to make precision guitar parts to tolerances that heretofore manufacturers couldn't even think about approaching. Guitar makers are always talking about handcraftsmanship. What handcraftsmanship is, in many instances, is the ability to fit together parts that are produced with a lot of 'slop' in them."
Take it for what you will Peavy is still a great company and their guitars have evolved greatly. (I dont own any yet but its only $$ stopping me big_smile  )
This would be why PRS, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUmdzFuv8Zs  Gibson (any naysayers can watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkyXEmmFT2U ) there is a good one on Dean also : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRZxwyiZ1xg ).

Thought you guys wouyld like to see how similar they are all made.

Thanks for all the imput. Think I'll take her to Guitar Center and let her take a look. As long as she keeps it in the 200. to 250. range. Who knows, maybe she'll want to use the Peavey I have. I do have a small Peavey amp that came with the guitar. Just thought that if she quits in month or two like kids do I wanted something that would not end up in the closet. (always wanted a acoustic-elec cutaway for grandpa)

At 12, I have to ask, how mature is she? I ask this because being a girl, she is either pretty mature, having made the leap of hormones, and thinks she knows where she wants to go.  Or the other side, still sorta of a little girl and kind of timid.

I only bring this up due to your statement of "that if she quits in month or two like kids do".  My older boy is 12 also, Its a hard age for both . I dont remember it too well but I am fairly certain it was rough on me.  Back to the point, Cade (12) Was interested in guitar at 10 and worked to buy his first one.  That was the deal.  If he really wnated it, than he had to learn the 12 chords I let him use my guitar for.  He had 2 friends at the time who were playing (one is so good it kills me to listen to him) and he got into it.  He bought a AXL strat with his own money.  I held up my end and got lessons for him.  Then it fell off for 2 yrs after he stopped lessons, he hardly touched his guitar.  Now at 12 he is starting again.  I think  taking her to Guitar Center is the best thing you could do.  Her hidden power and desire will reflect on what she is drawn to!  --- Ok sorry I sound like Dr.Phill.  Give her the tools and then if your the teacher, ask her what she wants to learn. I wouldnt go heavy on theory, just teach her the songs she wants to learn.  Dont forget a great tool are all the free backing tracks out there. http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/  great site!

Hope it all goes well! Beamer.

#2,  Get on the bike, and ride while listening to some HEAVY A$$ TUNES till the anger flys out into the wind big_smile
#3 have a beer and mow the grass while listening to some HEAVY A$$ TUNES ! followed by another beer and a cigar. (then the wife is happy too lolol.)

I have no hard data either, but I read about 6 bios, all the guys from the great past.  I do not know how Ozzy, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Ace Frehley, Peter Chris, Slash, Nicki Sixx,  Tommy Lee, and all the others I can not remember are still on this earth!

I think lots of the present crop have learned a little from the past.  Yes, many still like to get their drink on and probably like to chill with some wild wood flower, but they have seen the Heroin travistys, though a few still seem to fall to that, and are doing all right getting off on the music and the attention.  Heck! just give me 30,000 people in front of me. NOW THATS A DRUG ALL BY ITS SELF! As Bobby Doll (Poisons bass player) Says "Playing in front of 30.000 fans.... Its better than sex."

Go with the Ibanez!  its cool looking has the electrics and if heavy strings are a problem,, I used .009 Electric strings on my first ascoustic till I got used to them and put on the acustic bronze. Be the cool grandpa, get her a small pratice amp just so she can really get juced for playing.  Ask her what kind of music she wants to eventually play.  Is she a ballad/Jewl type  or is she a Lzzy Hale/Joan Jett rocker wanna be? ( Im personally for all the above but like the latter! LOLOLOL!

... That ATZ Kilcher on the "Alaska the last frontier" show on Discovery  is the father of one time big pop star JEWEL?
Just thought I would put that tidbit out there lol

Sadly I have to say that I went to a Jewl show 5 yrs ago to spend time with a friend and to check it out.  Sadly I must report that the show absolutley put me to sleep.  The best part was telling a story about her dad at a grammy party.  Then I was out again LOLOL. ( I have to say it was a special kind of torment - much like being stuck in an elevator)

Well My wife and I ended up being comfortable doing nothing but watching 6 hours of  "Alaska, the last frontier"  and having Rootbeer Floats and enjoyed being the only ones in the house most of the day!

It all depends on what you want to play and how you want to play  it.  how you do it becomes YOUR technique.

Clapton has his tech, as does Zakk Wild as does Santana on to Roy Clark. Find what works for you and keep on truckn' lol

Try holding the pick at different lengths from your fingers  and different amounts of mussel grip and then what different angles to the strings.  I guess I never have thought of it since I started with a pick and not finger picking. Wish I could finger pick now.

Real people:  Accept no substitute.  smile

But if you are going to accept a substitute, don't use a computer, use a book.  Try this:  Buy a book.  Start on page 1.  Do not leave page 1 until you understand and can do everything on page 1.   Then move to page 2, and repeat that process.   You can sit on your couch and do this while watching TV.

Last time I tried that I sat on page 1 for 2 weeks. still didnt "get it",  asked a friend finally, took 15 min.  A live person is really a must.  The vids  by everyone we have all mentioned befor are the next best thing in my opinion.  As I said, Rocksmith is just a fun way to get over the usually boreing stuff.  Espicially when you can get the cheat codes to be able to go directly to the skills arcade lol (ask a kid how to find the cheat code to any game and he will get you there LOLOLOLOL)

My guitar has a cheat code?   That is awesome.  smile

Only if you have the game lol  Its kind of like that pic we had circulating around  of the Talent Simulator stomp box  LOLOLOL

That's a damn good idea! I'm way down in the South East corner of the UK, so also pretty tricky to get to and find. The distances involved here are next to nothing compared to the US, but with our antiquated road network, and volume of traffic, it takes just about forever to get anywhere! The other consideration is the weather, which has been pretty poor for the last few summers - it's hard to plan anything more than a few days in advance.
Is there anyone else out there (in the UK) who might be able to host??

if there is a place like jeff had or you can front a good hotel and  reserve a party room, weather is not a issue,,, unless of course it washes your road out.   All most of us need is a empty room, libations, and you guys over there have excelent choices!, and your instruments.  hell get a connecting sweet, lift the beds against the wall, and you have all you need.
