Easier than that, play a dm7 and mute your d string. smile

I have a weird-ass brain. To me that takes a lot of extra steps...also if I'm  always thinking of things around the Ionian I can't get the textures of different modes.

For instance, I didn't really noodle much with the major pent much until recently. Prior to that I was playing in a lot of minor keys and playing music that required flat 3rds, so I just ignored the major. I started playing the major pent by thinking of "minor pent a b3 down the neck" and my solos just SUUUUUCKED. I had to stop what I was doing and learn the major pent as the major pent, without relating it to the minor pent.

Maybe its an inflexibility in my head. smile

@Jerome isnt that an overly complicated way of thinking about it?

I know how the resolutions work, was just confused by your reasoning. smile

Limiting oneself to the V7-I resolutions only apply if you're working exclusively in the major scale. In the mixolydian scale, you also have a dominant 7th chord on the tonic chord. If you're playing around with the blues scale (b3 and b7) you also have a dominant 7 chord on the IV.

I'm confused by your logic. c7 and F have nothing to do with the key of D in this context...maybe I'm just misunderstanding how you are thinking of this?

I drink both. I tend to avoid coffee in the summer, in favor of sun tea.

Russel, what do you mean by 1 to 4 in the key of d?

Learn the minor pentatonic scale, blues scale, mixolydian scale and dorian scale, each in A, E, G, C, D, and F.

Ear training and basic music theory. For instance, most chords have tonic (I) to subdominant (IV) to dominant (V) motion of some form or another. There are tons of substitute chords that can represent tonics, subdominants and dominants....that's where the ear training and theory come in to play. smile

You should try using two mics, one off the cone and one in the room.

The melody is the part of the song that you sing....the notes that go with the lyrics.

Jerome I did Medi Weight Loss Clinics - don't feel like givin' em a link so you can google it. Works great but the lack of eating just isn't sustainable.

Wow this is a hot topic here at Chordie - had no idea!!!

Man, growing old is a pain in the ass, isn't it?  I recently did a whole lot of weight loss - went from 260+ down to 195ish thanks to a medical weight loss plan. Once I got down there, though, I looked like hell. No muscle mass, real boney, no bueno. I gained back up to about 220 and then got frustrated, hit the yo-yo diet bs, worked myself down a few, up a few, down a few, and rather than stabilizing at 210 (as was plan) I made my way back to 230.

Tangent: I love beer and food. I hate running. Back on track....

I was looking at a variety of weight loss systems and was thinkin' about going back to the Dr. for more appetite suppressants, when several things occurred to me:

1. I'm a big dude. Not a lazy fatass or anything, just a bigger dude.
2. I used to love lifting heavy, heavy weights and haven't done it in 13 years.
3. Cardio can suck it.
4. I love beer and food.

Long story short, I decided that if I cant be a teenie ripped guy, I can be a decently-shaped ridiculously strong guy. I started improving my diet and lifting heavy again - real heavy! In 6 weeks I've put over 2" on my bicep but my chest has come down 2". My waist is oh-so-slightly smaller and I've put on 12 pounds but my body fat % is falling. All signs point to "yes."

So I've redefined what I want my own version of healthy to be. If I can muster up enough endurance to run from a big dog or a mugger, enough strength to lift a car off a baby, and look at myself in the mirror and say "not bad, BGD," maybe I don't need to be tiny with a 30" waist.

What I'd like to do is put muscle on for a while, take fat off. Put muscle on, take fat off. Put muscle on, take fat off. I'll let you know how it works...and please keep me accountable Chordie! I just set my personal record for flat bench press @ 325 lbs., but I also did 275 and 300 that day. I think I can push it up to 400 lbs. in the next 45 days. (I started at about 190 6 weeks ago, so that isn't so bad.) I'm currently leg sledding 1130 lbs. I'd love to max that machine out at 1300 lbs. and start hitting squats in a big way. (Don't be that impressed - the machine gives a ton of mechanical advantage to the pressor.)

Will keep you posted!

-Joe

If you're reading classical music that could indicate which finger to use on your picking hand (instead of PIMA). If you want something other than classical guitar music, try reading jazz melodies (buy a fake book), or violin/viola/cello parts. smile

Can we disable hyperlinking for junior members? That would disincentivize spammers and not impact the forum too much. Just a thought

Nah, I have all the guitars I need. And mine was built in the late 60s so it's quite a bit older than 30.

28 years ago this month I got my first steel string guitar that I still own and play nearly every day.
