Wow - That's quite the list Amy. I think I will attempt celebrating every one of them. I so love a party!

So where to start? I do believe today is the Winter Solstice so that seems a good place to begin. Now I just gotta figure out an appropriate cocktail.

we got 5 or 6" which is a pretty good amount for a single storm in this area. Seems to me the snow plows did a good job - they even cleared the street in front of my house on Friday and that usually gets no attention. It was a good moist snow and all the neighborhood kids were out yesterday playing in it.

I'm ready for Spring smile

I'd go to a guitar store and get an empty guitar box. Wrap that up for him to open and when the disappointment on his face is too much to handle, break out the amp. smile

Nah - that'd be cruel.

Hope the Christmas show goes well!

Not sure... you'll have to ask Topdown on that one... he started this wonderful experience.  Rules on seconds Topdown?

I hate rules - especially for something like this that's just supposed to be fun. I really would like to see the package travel a bit more before it starts making "seconds", but no rule involved. I wouldn't mind getting it again myself to add some more of those chordie picks, but I think the right thing to do would be to give it 24 hours (at least) before requesting. If there is no interest in that time, just keeping it going would be the right thing to do.

It's only been to 10 members so far, surely there are at least a few more chordians that are interested in getting it.

So, seconds are fine. I'd just encourage those that have received it already to wait a bit to give others a chance.

Cool stories Kenny - I appreciate the thought for Tater.

Your hockey pad story reminded me of this story, something the 'Canes do every year for underprivileged kids. Theses hockey guys are really top notch, friendly and approachable in our community, not like real big superstars as I imagine they are treated up north.

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=510156

Gotta love the south - they are calling for a "major snowstorm" to hit us in North Carolina starting tomorrow afternoon lasting through Saturday. Predicting a "possibility" of 3"-5". I'm a damn yankee and laughs at such forecasts (a damn yankee, as opposed to a garden variety yankee is one who moves south and stays here). To be fair, they simply do not have the snow removal equipment as we did up north and the roads can be difficult.

What gets me is the panic at the grocery store. Is it a southern tradition to make french toast at every threatened snowfall or what? Amazing  - every store around will be a mad house and will sell out of milk, eggs and bread right before a snowfall prediction (which usually are wrong anyway).

Forget the bread - I'll be heading to the booze store. And gotta dig our sleds out of the basement. big_smile

I've been waiting for Toney to chime in here, but perhaps he is too proud. That's right, Chordie's own Southpaw used to be a righty prior to a bad boating accident. Here's an article from a few years ago:

Toney Hall was enjoying a day of water-skiing with friends on Claytor Lake in Virginia when, without warning, the boat's steering cable broke.

The boat lurched, tossing Hall into the water. It happened so quickly that Hall was back in the boat before he began to comprehend how this would change his life. Hall had been hit by the boat's propeller.

"It was gruesome," Hall said. "I was freaking out because my left hand was shredded from the elbow down."

Now, 20 years later, Hall is playing guitar and singing at a local restaurant. The audience smiles and shouts out song requests. I watch, awed at the human spirit's resilience.

Hall, of Largo, began playing in bands while still in high school in Virginia.

"The first time I held a guitar I wanted to make it my career," Hall said. "After the accident both of my hands were useless for months."

He underwent two surgeries on his right hand and a grueling 13 reconstructive surgeries on the left. He lost his left thumb and most of the control, feeling and strength of the fingers on the left hand.

His doctors advised him to give up the guitar.

"I've always been motivated by someone telling me I can't do something," Hall said.

Using a mirror to relearn the guitar, Hall struggled for two years as a left-handed player before he even felt adequate.

"It still doesn't feel natural," Hall said. "If I dream about playing guitar or I start to play air guitar with the radio, I play right-handed."

His damaged fingers can't hold a pick in his left hand.

"I tried Popsicle sticks with electrical tape and bandaging a pick to my hand but nothing worked," Hall said. "Finally, I got creative with super glue and created a pick I can use."

Hall's creation is simple. Using a thumb pick, a finger pick and two more picks, he has created a brace that slips onto his strumming fingers.

In 2002, Hall got married. With the blessing of his wife, Rosetta, he left his full-time job to focus on music.

Hall is a stay-at-home parent by day and plays private parties and local restaurants by night. He played 375 gigs in 2007.

He's developed a following, including Cher and Jim Hoffman of Largo.

"Toney's a great musician," Cher said. "He always gets the crowd going."

I couldn't imagine doing it, but it can be done if you're dedicated enough as Toney was / is.

I have downgraded to a thiner plec and am currently using a 0.46mm plec and this is not really helping. Can anyone please help me in figuring out what I'm doing wrong?

In my experience, a pick that thin will worsen any "clicking" sound. Try moving up to a .73mm or heavier. Here's a lesson from Justin that might help.

Thanks for the pick pic MKM - Interesting to see how it has evolved since I originally sent it off. Those bunny picks weren't mine, but I'm happy your daughter found something she liked LOL!

Do you have a gmail account? If so, I can set you up as a collaborator and you can assist in updating the map. I do get the feeling your computer / interwb skills are better than mine smile

Leave me out of the hat Pix, just wanted to say Well Done!

All good ideas Pix. The above issue always bugged me too, until I learned this little keyboard shortcut.

Press the Ctrl key while clicking the link - That will open it up in a new tab.

It's just a workaround - I agree it would be better if the default were to open the link in a new tab instead of tossing you out of chordie.

I'd love to see that video - kickin' and chasing a chicken. My son just asked me "what are you laughing at?" Just thinking about is funny.

I'd love to try that also - looks like a blast. Bungee jumping is another thing that I would love to do. I have done a bit of hang gliding (at Kitty Hawk - no mountains for me), I also had 5 parachute jumps many years ago. Here's a few pics of my 1st jump.

The plane was a 1950's something Cessna - Looks safer to jump out of than land in. You had to crawl out of door, put 1 foot on the metal "step" over the wheel and hold onto the wing strut while going 120 mph at 3,000 feet until the jump master yelled "Jump"

He Dale and welcome to Chordie!

Found the lyrics here:

And here's a you tube video with guitar. Unfortunately, my ear is not good enough to pick up the chords and the mike stand is obscuring the fingering in much of the video. Maybe a member with better transcribing skills will give it a listen and reply.

I've been working on a similar project for Skyhook wireless the past couple of months. Skyhook provides the GPS tech behind the i-phone and other phone based mapping devices. It's not nearly as detailed as the Google street-view (no camera, not every single street).

They sent me detailed maps, a netbook computer and an antennae box that sticks to the rear passenger window in my vehicle. Basically, I drive around on the selected roads and their hardware locates and maps all cell towers and wi-fi networks. It doesn't use the wi-fi signal, just locates them and with that info, the software in your i-phone can determine your location.

I imagine google does a similar thing - hire local drivers for a few weeks or months to drive around their local towns. I've driven nearly all the roads in central North Carolina - not such a bad thing this time of year, watching the leaves change and fall. It always amazes me how quickly one can leave a medium size newer city, such as Raleigh and within a few miles be in rural Americana that hasn't changed in 50+ years.
