Why the hell does it even matter?

It matters because GittarDocPhil says it does. He wants to know who people like to perhaps enlighten himself or others onto something wonderful and fantastic that others might be missing out on. Don't think of his request as a popularity contest but instead think of it as a showcase of brilliance.

Hello GittarDocPhil my friend,
I'm really into; Steve Vai, Warren Haynes, Carlos Santana, Eric Johnson,
                         Trey Anastasio, Jerry Douglas, Pat Metheny, George Benson,
                           Joe Satriani, Gary Rossington, Brad Paisley, John Mayer,
                             etc....., the list grows and changes every day.

My wife love's the fact that I started playing guitar. She's after me all the time to play a few for her. After all she bought  it for me for a Xmas present and was probably the best present ever.  Wow this guitar helped me quit smoking ciggeretts, one year Oct. 15. Cut down on watching television too. We love kitchens jams with friends, fiddles, and guitars. This is an interesting thread.

Ah, we are the lucky few Badeye,
My wife too loves the fact that I'm a guitar player. As a matter of fact when we found out she was pregnant with our son she not only gave me the wonderful gift of being a father but she also bought me the guitar I've wanted for 25+ years.(Gibson J-45) My guitar playing helps to enable  us to keep our son out of daycare. She works during the day and I work at night. My practice time during the day has been reduced to whenever the little guy naps but it's enough time to be sufficient. Good luck with the cigarettes, I'm goin' through a nicotine battle too(snuff,Copenhagen). Had a scare at the dentists office and gave up the snuff stuff 7 months ago. I dipped for 27 years so I kinda feel your pain. Music is great withdraw therapy for many things.

Kurt wrote his own music (mostly), Esteban plays other peoples music(mostly). Kurt was the voice of a generation, Esteban has a really good band backing his decent guitar playing. The question here should be this; Who's more significant to music, one who is innovative or one who is imitative?

Many times in the early stage of my gigs young children will be there with their parents. I do a medley of ScoobyDoo, Sesame Street, and Sponge Bob Square Pants. The kids absolutely love and I feel like the dork of all dorks but as long as the kids are happy.........

A few other 'silly' songs are Carma Chameleon By Boy George, I Am Woman by Helen Reddy, TV themes; Jefferesons(Movin'On Up), Fat Albert(Hey, Hey,Hey), Come On Feel The Noize by Quiet Riot, Ace Of Spades by Motorhead, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Highway to Hell, It's a Long Way From The Top if You Wanna Rock-n-Roll by Ac/Dc. The previous 5 songs are silly only because I do them with only my acoustic guitar and surprisingly they most always go over well. Good topic.......

You really need to play the specific guitar that you're planning on purchasing. Guitars are made one at a time and each individual guitar has a personality of it's own. At one time I had 3 Takamine EG330LH's and each one of them felt, and played differently.

Ovations are very nice guitars and you'll most likely be happy with anything from them. I still recommend playing the guitar before you buy it. Don't be concearned with bothering the sales associates at your local music store either. It's their job and you, the customer, are ultimately their boss.

Happy Shopping,

Hazen,
It really depends on what kind of setting you'll be playing to justify a need for a monitor. If you're limited for space and can't locate your amp behind you(Not too close because feedback from your mic will occur) then I would consider monitor(s).Personally, I use 2 amps, one behind my left and one behind my right, a minimum of 6 feet is generally far enough to eliminate feedback. Is the amp you're looking at a Behringer? If so, you might want to consider purchasing (2) 45 watt Ultracoustic Behringers instead of the single 100 watt amp. You're getting 90 watts with the two amps and you'll be able to distribute your sound to a wider area. I use the 45 watt Behr. with a 50 watt Marshall Soloist and they pump!I control them with an unpowered Mackie mixer w/ digital reverb.

I'm all about minimizing the amount of gear I have to lug around so if I can find a way to replace things such as monitors and the like, I'm all over it. The previously mentioned placement of amps behind, off your shoulders, works very good for me. Hope this info was helpful and not too confusing. I just awoke and my oration isn't crankin' yet.

Peace,

Roger,
I feel priviledged to be mentioned in such a fine song. Very nice chord progression and your lyric cadence is right on the mark. We do have a great bunch of people here on Chordie. Great idea on your part putting to music our saga of musical electronic friendships. Look foward to hearing more of your music.

Karaoke is the devil for live music. It takes jobs away from true musicians. I guess it has a place somewhere but I wish an island someplace far, far, away could be created for Karaoke "singers". I know this seems shallow in essence but it's my true inner feeling. BOYCOT KARAOKE!!!!! It must cease to exist. Thank you and have a fantastic day.

I'll break it down like this; As far as live performances go Hendrix was the better "showman" but SRV was technically superior. I was lucky enough to see SRV twice in concert. Once in 1983 ( Roanoke, VA) and in 1990  (Washington DC). SRV conveyed emotion through his music that made me cry. He's the only guitarist that has done this for me personally. I have seen numerous live recordings of Hendrix to base this statement on.  In the studio is a different story. I have the "Band of Gypsies" DVD that Hendrix's original recording engineer, Eddie Kramer, plays indidvidually some of the amazing things that Hendrix was creating, some of which still, some 35 years later, have guitarists scratching their head and saying what the........SRV was more than a blues player as Hendrix was more than an experimentalist loud acid rocker. To say who the better player was is impossible for me to say.
I agree with Badeye, nice topic for discussion DocPhil.

James,

Enough with artistic imagery and 'left up to personal interpretation' stuff. You gotta let us know what you did.
I once drove my motorcycle into a telephone pole while looking back at a station wagon full of young gals from Tennessee. Lucky for me the folks who lived by the pole I hit were doing some remodelling to their home and had some sheet rock tilted against the pole I ran into. I escaped with only minor injuries to myself and motorcycle but my pride was almost totaled.
There, I told you mine now you tell us yours!

Have a Great Day,

I heard tale of a Mr.Django Reinhart fellow and a long, long, time ago(30's & 40's) he was one of, if not the heralded guitarists of his time. Upon further research I found that Mr.Reinhart achieved much of his success after sustaining a serioius hand injury. This had personal appeal to me for in 1987 I also met with a similar unlucky fate. Django's was from a fire, mine was from a boat propeller. I feel a connection somehow, not in our levels of playing, but in our will to play after enduring near tragic injuries. Here is a song from the late, great. Django Reinhart that has, thus far, been my most challenging song to learn;

Give it a try, take it slow and be persistant, it'll give you a broader mental vision of the fretboard.

I just remembered this after reading Dado's post in " local band" "let hear about your gigs" where he was talking about having a dog not appreciating his music lol

And although looking at the subject heading for this thread it has nothing to do with women being chained to the sink lol

When I was camping about 10 years ago, lovely day, white clouds ( not the normal grey/black we are used to in scotland) with the sun somewhere up there making it quite bright, I was sitting on the bonnet of my car strumming a few chords. I was not playing anything in particular if anything at all. I might have been sitting just making a noise, i really canny remember now.
A herd of cows started to pass, or most passed but the younger cows, not quite calves but a bit younger than the bigger ones stopped and began to look at me. There was a bout 4 or 5 of them listening to me.
At this point I began to play a song, Knocking on heavens door I think it was. They began to walk toward me as I played while the rest of the heard moved on. When I stopped they young cows stopped coming towards me and started to face the rest of the herd. I began to play and they started coming forward again.
I done this three or four times, stopping and watch them move on then play and watch them come toward me.
I stopped when I thought they were getting too close. Not that I am scared of them but thought at the time, how close will they actually get if I keep playing? would they have came face to face? would they have kept a certain distance? I didnt really want to find out since I would have no idea what to do if they came face to face, especially if they started to drop their guts out on my camping area.

So, next time yer in a filed whether yer camping or not and there are cows in it, try playing your guitar, especially if there are young calves in, see if they take an interest.

Ken

Ken,
Everyone knows cows love mooooooooo-sic.
Sorry in advance,
Toney

Sirius Satelite Radio;
Channel 17, Jam Band Central and Channel 32, Grateful Dead Headquarters are my favorites for music but I'm usually practicing on the guitar or piano or trombone so music on the radio is a conflict. I find myself listening to Howard Stern and Bubba The Love Sponge. Avant-garde humorists, both of them!! Hey now! Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo............

OK, I have about 6 kids in my Youth Groups at church that want to learn how to play guitar.  I thought I'd start a little begining guitar class, but this is the kicker; I'm self taught, so I know how I did it, but I don't know if that's the best way to teach my kids (mostly 13-15 year olds).  I don't plan on this thing getting to advanced (if it does, I'm certainly not the guy to teach!), but I would like to teach them some of the basics.
If any of my fellow chordians have any ideas / tips / stories / web sites / anything that might help me out, I could sure use it.
Thanks!

Wow!, What a task you have at hand!!! Lets break it down in simple terms;
Begin with an introduction to the guitar and all of it's parts. They'll need to know what the parts are so they can be told which parts to use(body, neck, fretboard, stock, bridge, nut, tuning pegs, string names, etc.)

Next, show your students how to tune their guitars and make sure everyone is tuned together in 440 A. This is the 3rd A note on the piano (starting from the bass notes).

After parts education and tuning technique I would start with a few basic chords like G, C, and D. Show where to place fingers on the fretboard to assemble these chords. Take it slow and work on one chord at a time. Don't forget how hard is was for you when you first began to play.

Next, I'd work on some various strumming patterns like; all down, all up, down up down, etc.......

Another project I like to do when I have several students is to create our own song lyrically and using the simple basic chords of which we're working with. Go around the room and let each student add to the previous lyric until you have a dozen or so lines. Then break them down into thirds and build your own original tune.

Just some ideas..........Good luck

I Had the Vox Valvetronix AD30VT 30w 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp for 4 days and it started making cracking noise, then a hum, and then it popped. Turn it off as fast as i good and you could smell the electronics (tubes) or whatever.

I bought it from Music 123 and called the customer service today (Sunday) and talked to a live person (Jason) and he sent me a return UPS postage to send it back, as least they seem to stand behind their products. Will let you know how fast and how it goes with the new one. This really sucks since this is my first amp and I'm just a beginner.

Sound like you may have just gotten a "dud". I've had mine( VoxAD15) for over a year and play it daily. I've yet to have any sort of problem at all. Music 123 is great for making "wrongs right." Best of luck with your replacement. Those things happen sometimes, don't get discouraged.
