While watching The Henry Rollins Show tonight I saw a very interesting, bizarrely unique band. They call themselves the Mars Volta. Almost experimental but some structural balance and melodic unison was evident at times. They're definately not your average 'me too Lou or plain Jane' type of band. I liked it, alot!

Hey to everyone. I am a guitar, mandoline, banjo player and have suddenly developed carpel tunnel in my left hand being a righty this is most disturbing. It seems to be getting somewhat better but I'm interested in your feedback and ideas. I'm considering acupuncture being a veteran I don't really think the VA can do anything. When chording was so easy I have to fight to make my fingers work AHGGG! Anyone help??? marcalan
First off, go see a doctor. This is a must.
Secondly, you can switch to a lighter guage string on your guitar or even play a classical or folk guitar with nylon strings. I live and perform with severe chronic arthritis in my hands so I understand your situation. Sometimes when my condition gets real bad I'll tune my guitar down a step and capo the 2nd fret. This can get a bit confusing if you don't keep your concentration but it is effective. Less tension on the strings equates to less force needed from hand to fretboard. Good luck....

This site has been one of the greatest tools for learning songs I've came in contact with. I've never been involved in forums on the computer of any kind, until Chordie. There are so many artists here who get what I get, are into what I'm into, and most importantly are ambitious and strongly desire to improve their skills as musicians. I've learned a great deal from Chordie and hopefully I've been helpful to others with some information I've given.
I'm a 41 year old husband and father of two who plays music professionally in the beautiful sunshine state of Florida. My ultimate goal is to be a studio musician who works from home and make enough money to have 10 more kids.(well maybe 5 to be realistic)My lovely wife's not in agreement with me on this one, yet. Nothing in life has given me happiness like I've received from being a Dad. I've had my share of the spotlight and I think I'd be just as, if not happier helping others create and record their own music.(maybe my kids?!?!)
Although I've yet to pyhsically meet most of the people I've established contact with on Chordie, I consider many of you friends. I thank you Per for creating and operating this wonderful site. Chordie is cool!

Re: Wall mounted (12 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I don't want to be a messenger, but I was told, in 2 different guitar stores, that these things, to hang your guitar on the wall, can influence a GIBSON by causing a head stock crack.
The main reason for this is due to accidental bumping into by staff or patrons. If you have your guitar hung in a low traffic area you should be fine. I would also strongly recommend a hanger that's padded where the head stock rests. The good absolutely outweighs the bad with wall hangers for your guitar.

Re: PHISH (11 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
No, sorry gitaardocphil, it is incorrect to write that 50% of their songs are covers. Phish, like almost every band to ever play a show anywhere, anyplace, anytime, would throw in the ocassional 'cover song'. 90% or more of the songs Phish played in concert or recorded in the studio were their own creations. Here are a few links to confirm this statement;

Re: Wall mounted (12 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Wall hanging one's guitar is the best place for storing, so long as the wall on which it is hung is in a climate controlled room. Not too hot, not too cold, humidity controlled, and away from direct sunlight. These conditions can do severe harm to the finish of a guitar. Wall hanging the guitar keeps the neck straight and eliminates the potential for neck warping due to leaning the guitar against a wall or lying it down in an unsupportive case. Also make sure, real sure, that the hangers are securely place in the wall. Preferably into a stud(thick weight supporting lumber) or reenforced with sturdy plastic plugs. Finally, clips, or fasteners to secure the guitar at the top of the hanger are always a good idea.

they didnt even laugh when i told them i write songs
That's cool Selso. Isn't it refreshing when iconic types of people are very real and grounded. I think it's especially ironic that Cake covers a Bread song.(Guitar Man)

Dear AdamAss4,
Really sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience with Chordie. We really are nice folkes here and genuinely regret any dischord this ordeal has created. I hope resolution of some sort to your liking is forthcoming in the very near future. You seem like a wonderfully pleasant person and I personally would love to meet you someday, maybe have some tea and cookies and talk about nice things, like puppies, cotton candy, teddy bears, and carousels. You have yourself a wonderful day.
Kindest Regards,

A life lesson I'd like to share; In my early teens I was having a difficult time dealing with issues that life was handing me. Things like; my parents splitting up, losing my friends as we changed schools, sexual relationships, drug and alcohol experimentation, the facade of religion, and local law enforcement encounters. Pretty much the usual stuff a teen ager goes through.
Something happened that changed my life right then and there. I did some volunteer work with multi-handicapped children. To see the struggles these 'heros' went through day to day, hour by hour, made my issues seem so small. The exposure to these wonderful little human beings and their tenacity and positive outlook on life changed my life immediately. I'm not saying one should minimize one's own issues that cause pain but just think for a moment how bad things actually are and how much worse things could be.

I'm refering to the band not the food. I like both. I really like the sound of these guys. They've been around for a while and have had some commercial success with songs like; 'Going The Distance,' covers of 'I Will Survive' and 'Guitar Man'. Here's some further notes on CAKE;
Cake (often written CAKE) is a band from Sacramento, California, formed in 1991. They have had several hits throughout the 1990s and 2000s from their five recorded albums.
Although their music is often classified as alternative or indie rock, it combines multiple musical genres, such as funk, ska, pop, jazz, rap, and country. Cake's music features droll lyrics rife with word play and syncopation (laconically-voiced in a rap-like style by lead vocalist/guitarist John McCrea?), catchy distorted guitar riffs (courtesy, until 1998, of guitarist Greg Brown and, until 1997, bass player Victor Damiani), and a solo trumpet (played by Vince DiFiore?). Their unique musical style has been compared to They Might Be Giants, Talking Heads, and Camper Van Beethoven.
Damiani left the band in 1997, replaced by Gabe Nelson. Greg Brown left in 1998, replaced by Xan McCurdy?. Brown and Damiani continued to work together when they formed the band Deathray. Todd Roper left the band to focus on parenthood after ...years active 1991 – Present

Did Jerry Garcia lived very good being a musician? I mean financially?
Yes, very good. His estate still generates massive income. In the early days of the Grateful Dead the band struggled for a short time financially. But as time went on and their popularity grew the $$ started rolling in. Jerry Garcia was a very wise businessman as well as an incredibly talented and gifted musician.

Re: WHO IS CONSIDERED TODAY AS THE BEST GUITARIST? (26 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Take a look at this guy - Tommy Emmanuel. Probably the best unknown guitarist I've ever seen/heard.
http://www.spikedhumor.com/articles/665 … _Song.html
You can also go to YouTube, or Spiked Humor and search on his name.
I'd heard of this guy previously from numerous people. I have to say, after watching a dozen or so of his live performance footage, I am truely impressed with Tommy Emmanuel. He's a fantastic player with technical prowess and personality too. Very refreshing to see a new member of the 'elite' list of guitarists. Just remember though for every single amazing player we actually see or hear there are many others out there just as good if not better than the best of the best. It sure is fun when we find a 'diamond in the rough' like Tommy Emmanuel. Thanks for the link, I really enjoyed it !!!

Re: PHISH (11 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Jerry was the lead guitarist and sang lead vocals on many of the Grateful Deads tunes. 3 part vocal harmonies were in almost every G.D. song so Jerry sang harmony on many songs as well. Garcia was also the groups most outspoken member and more times than not he handled most of the press/media questions. Jerry also contributed to many of the lyric writing tasks with Robert Hunter(not a member of the band, just their lyricist). Jerry was many times the face of the band and his fuzzy,burly appearance was the prototype for the Grateful Deads mascot dancing bears. Garcia was a gracious, intelligent, gentle, human beeing with a stong, savy sense for the business side of music. He also has a largely succesful line of neck ties as well. Here's a link to shine a little more light on the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia;

Re: PHISH (11 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Phish, in my opinion, was very deserving of the huge success they achieved. They are 4 virtuosos on their respective instruments. They came along in the right time as well. I'll expand; When Jerry Garcia died the Grateful Dead pretty much was over. The Dead still play and are wonderful but the magic of the Grateful Dead vanished with Garcia's passing. Phish also incorporated many of the wonderful elements of a Grateful Dead show such as unusual covers(they do an all-vocal cover of Freebird), long, wonderful variated jams with soloing from each member of the band,beautiful light shows, catchy simple recognizeable songs and mind blowing intricate masterpieces. They snatched up the 2nd generation 'Dead Heads' and ran with it. Why Phish split up is just too bizarre for me to even start to understand. The solo stuff Trey Anastasio does is cool and all but it's nothing on the level of the stuff he did with Phish.
Many people associate Phish's music/concerts with drug use. Sure there was probably some drug use goin' on at their shows but doesn't that happen at most all shows? I bet even some 'Christian' rock shows have a few people puffin' on some 'hippie lettuce' or lickin' small pieces of paper. I only hope the possibility of drug use at their shows doesn't turn away a potential listener of their 'near spritual sound'. Phish was as good as any band ever in a live setting. If you haven't heard recording of them doin' their thing, I strongly urge you to give it a chance..............

Also, a young lady played bass for John Mellencamp a few years back and she was spectacular. Her name is Me'Shell NdegeOcello and she is one of the most gifted stringed instrument players of all time. If you don't believe me look her up and listen to her...........
