Isn't it great that Hitler's Third Reich was stopped?
Isn't it great that North Korea didn't take over South Korea?
Isn't it great that North Vietnam didn't take over South Vietnam?
Isn't it great that the ethnic cleansing in the Balkans was opposed?
Isn't it great that our brave men & women in uniform stand vigilant against terrorism today?

Whether we call it Veterans' Day (USA) or Remembrance Day (Canada) ... we owe them all a big time THANK YOU!

For those that don't who he is, here's an awesome pic of him in action. I love the countdown implied here: 3 - 2 - 1 - swat!!! I can imagine hearing sports commentator Jack Armstrong:

Yes    "Awaken"     Birmingham, 2003

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd2QM84wFGc

I don't know how many hundreds of times I've sat back with eyes closed, and listened to "Awaken". There is so much going here musically, and it's atmospheric changes and various instrumentations are transcendent (my word for the day). Howe uses three different guitars throughout, and the late Chris Squire does the same, except they're all in one big chunk o' lumber. It's very difficult to refrain from doing a play-by-play on this great composition ... but I will. lol "Awaken" is from Yes's 1977 album "Going for the One".

It's always great to see musicians from all over the world, making their mark in new yet familiar ways.

By the way, I'm a huge NBA basketball fan, and your guy Steven Adams is an adrenaline rush to watch. The big man (7'0" / 255 lbs) is amazingly athletic, and his savvy with the media is equally enjoyable to watch. I'm hoping our one Canadian NBA team (the Toronto Raptors) can get a guy of his caliber in the ranks.

"Just passin' through ... to don't know where, don't know when."

Well written, Peatle.

For a detailed discussion about suicide bombings, terrorist attacks, and the like, read an explanatory book "On Suicide Bombing" by Talal Asad. It'll make your blood curdle for sure. Here are some quotes ... horrifying stuff:

Very good indeed! He reminds me of our folk / country / singer / songwriter Gordon Lightfoot in a lot of ways ... and that's a BIG compliment.

Gnarls Barkley   "Crazy"   (arranged & performed by Don Ross)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKupfayqB00

I had the enjoyment of watching Don play this live in concert on Sept. 24. He expressed hesitancy due to some "inappropriate conduct" from the Gnarls Barkley duo, and asked us to just enjoy the music, and not take his playing it as an endorsement of their behavior. I have no idea what he was talking about!

Happy Guy Fawkes Day, New Zealand and Great Britain!

Here in Canada, we don't celebrate this holiday ... but it would be good if we had a reason to. What passes as "democracy" in this country is disgraceful. We have a federal election every 4-years or so, and the politicians can make whatever promises they want to get the electorate's attention. Our most powerful broadcaster (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) is 100% publicly funded, so they promote whichever pro-socialism candidate who offers them the most money, and the sheep blindly follow.

After elected, there are no mechanisms in place to hold them accountable to their promises. The locally-elected candidates for the ruling party are required to support the party line, even if their constituents don't. And since that situation exists, they really don't try to find out what the people who voted for them think. Instead of representing the electorate's interests at the policy table, they spend their time "selling" the government position / agenda to their constituents! So every election term basically gives us a 4-year tyranny.

As a result, voter turnout continues to diminish, so that a full 1/3 of the electorate doesn't vote anymore ...  a number which grows each election. What's happening is that 1/3 of eligible voters are saying, "None of the above." There are times when I'm ashamed of what my country is becoming. Perhaps we need a Bolshevik Revolution or a Guy Fawkes so that true democracy will return ... but I have no hopes this will happen. We reached rubicon a long time ago.

Had to rant ... and this seemed like the right occasion. I think I'll go play my guitar, and see if I can delude myself into thinking everything's okay for a few moments.

I stayed with 8.1 on my laptop, which has worked fine. Sorry to hear Windows 10 has been problematic for y'all. I'm one of those old guys who lives by the mantra "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." so stayed put with the older version. My wife has been using a MacBook for several years without a single issue, and I suspect I'll go that way when this 3-year-old DELL needs to be replaced.

That's great fun!

When he went "head top" I was getting a kick out of the stone-faces on the orchestra members behind him, i.e., like they didn't even notice. Then I wondered if he was going to do Jimi Hendrix's "lighter fluid" stunt. Mr. Campbell has too much class for that, and besides: who would dare set fire to a 12-string Hamer? Nice axe!

Thanks for this, TIG!

Mo', I left you some comments on the Cloud, my friend. I hope you will read them and take them to heart, because they are heartfelt. As far as the technical quality, I thought your voice came out stronger this time (maybe it was the chords you felt more comfortable with?) and the rest you're just gonna have to read about there and I hope you'll like what I wrote.

Your Bud,

Bill

i still don't like to hear myself singing.

There's nuttin' wrong with your voice, Mojo ... quite good, actually. I think we all share that sentiment, though. Sometimes I wonder what singers like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Willie Nelson think about their own voices? Their contribution to music is massive, but let's face it ... they really can't sing very well.

Good post, Bill ... he uses palm-muting very well, a simple technique that really can add dimension to a piece.

King Crimson    "Starless & Bible Black"    Takamatzu, Japan, 2015

These guys have never been boxed into following the rules, so why not have three drummers / percussionists? Robert Fripp's creative guitar playing & use of effects (a.k.a. "Fripper-tronics") is just the beginning of the boundary-breaking style KC has been about since forming back in the late-60's. This clip is from a 3-DVD boxed set which was just released in September 2016, curiously titled "Radical Action (To Unseat the Hold of Monkey Mind)".

Some will conclude that a person has to be under the influence of something to enjoy this, but I completely disagree. I haven't touched drugs or alcohol for almost 40 years, and love getting absorbed into the unusual detail of music like this. This footage was done while KC was on tour in Japan in 2015, and it's awesome that they're still making music together after almost 50 years.

Bil

Thanks, Bill ... so glad you enjoyed this.

The comraderie between these two is fun, and reminds me of when my best friend Greg and I get together to jam. He's a better guitarist, but never makes me feel that way. We both enjoy music and that's what counts.

Whatta a bummer, Jerome! I haven't seen smoke from an amp for a l-o-n-g time (thankfully) but it can be a real adventure trying to find out why, and how to fix it. I hope your adventure ends successfully and inexpensively.

More great work from Mr. LongFingers! Some of us use (and enjoy!) instructional material from Justin Sandercoe (www.justinguitar.com) and here's an interesting video of Mike Dawes teaching this piece to Justin. Great musicians at work, and having a good time at it!

As the others have said ...

Humidity is a bigger concern, especially with acoustic guitars. The temp changes may simply require you to re-tune before you play each time, which is a good habit anyway. But damp, cooler air is heavier, and will typically settle in basements that aren't heated. Over time, serious, permanent damage can be done to an acoustic instrument made of wood (guitar, mandolin, violin, piano, etc.).

By the way ... welcome to Chordie!

Nice work again, Russell.

This song by Bad Company, Bill's comment about his old band's name, and referring to you guys as the "Harding Trio" got me thinking. How about "Hard Company"? Or are y'all too old for that to be relevant? lol lol lol (sorry ... couldn't resist)

Unitopia    "Inside the Power"    Netherlands, 2014

A song about the experience of surfing in Australia, which apparently rivals / exceeds the conditions in Hawaii. I guess it's quite common for playful dolphins to join humans in surfing the big waves, which would have to be an amazing thing. Good music from these guys, and I hope they keep at it.

Thanks Doug for the insight  from the K&K site. I did listen to that previously but after you do so much research things start to get cloudy with all the data. I guess the easiest way is to try it first without. I can always get a preamp if I don't like the sound without one. Thanks to all who shared their thoughts. It's what I like about this site.

If the folk at your local music store are accommodating, you could probably take your guitar in, and plug it in to a SansAmp (or whatever) to give it a try .. before you buy. No one else's opinion matters more than your own, so you could do a with / without comparison, and hear how it sounds. If you're a regular customer, they'd be crazy not to let you.

Another alternative would be a Rapco V-Cord. This would allow you to plug your K&K-equipped guitar into your amp, find the maximum volume setting you'd want to use, then use the knob on the cord to lower it as needed.

http://www.rapcohorizon.com/p-345-v-cab … cable.aspx

You wouldn't have any effects at your toes / fingers, but you could at least control the volume.

Hi both. Are you using a heavy or light gauge string? I've been using Martin's 11 or12 gauge but they don't seem to hold their tone for long. I've been thinking about trying a lighter gauge, maybe a 10. What do you think?

My personal preference is 12's on an acoustic, and 10's on an electric. Anything lighter on an acoustic just sounds a bit too thin (to my ears, anyway). Switching down to a lighter string may also create some fret buzz, especially if the guitar is setup for 12's. The thinner strings may sit lower in the nut, and there can be buzz at the first few frets because of it.

Hmmmm ... hope that works out alright for you, Phill.

Most of the warranty limitations on gear "this side o' the pond" confine the manufacturer's obligations to their equipment only, and not to other items which may have damaged due to their product failing. I hope your experience comes out satisfactory.
