Hey Lieven!

I knew someone once whom, when another friend was showing his whistling key ring, announced "That's an Eb you have to whistle!"

                           !?

The closest I've come to that is with the piano. Now I don't know the guitar THAT well (I'd have to work out what the note is above the 5th - 7th fret - and many is the time I've sat down with a guitar neck chart or started writing my own to learn it (my laziness!)) but the piano I know less well - I know most major, minor, flat, sharp ,and 7th chords (or can quickly work out) but my knowledge of songs is a pattern I learn of where my fingers go to at a certain time rather than "I'm, playing an Eb 7th," or whatever.

However, I got to the point with piano that things "just happened;" a song or piece of music, usually by an established artist, would come out of nowhere, my fingers would find the chords and the runs without thinking about/realising what I was doing!

But no, I don't think in Eb, A 9th or whatever. Give me one true note tho' and a blank stave and as long as I have that one note for continual reference I could write out a simple tune that's in my head.

The closest I could say to coming to the point of being able to think it is with audio equipment; I can work out the input, bus routing and alternatives for an input in my head away from the studio (hearing an audio source and correcting the EQ is however one part I can do entirely in my head with 95% accuracy.) I used to ask my degree students to tell me how many different ways there were of aquiring one signal (mic or guitar or etc) the most they came up with was 40 - 42! I would have to sit down and think of them all to remember how many.

I believe the secret of perfect pitch is to associate each note with a colour, but know no more than that.

It is my belief that knowledge of music theory is not necessary to be a GREAT musician, knowledge of your instrument IS!

Harry Patch 1898 - 2009

Relieved.

One line.

That's all it takes.

One line somewhere in a poem or song that hits you, knocks the stuffing out of you, leaves you cold, makes you laugh or makes you cry. One of these and a poem is said to be great.

You have got a whole verse! The last one.

I could go into stuff like alliteration and metaphoric simile (clever one if you can do it, that) but this was merely the build-up to the punch in the heart which is the last line!

Skillfully crafted. Haunting sentiment. A fitting tribute to all who fell and (perhaps worse) those who survived them.

With your permission I would like to send this in to the local paper The Wells Journal, the local paper for the place Harry Patch lived. There are friends in the village who cared for him at Fletcher House and accompanied him to Royal Palaces and State events, I'm thinking of someone in particular the mother of whom used to go round the village collecting for the British Legion Poppy fund and who served in WWII, and I believe all would think this a fitting tribute.

Whatever you decide StranSongs (if you say yes and they publish I will post you a copy!) a very, VERY powerful poem - hard hitting and tear inducing.

Harry Patch who served in the First World War made his last journey today as people came from all over the country to attend his funeral service in Wells Cathedral. (Wells is 4-5 miles from me.)

Harry lived to the age of 111 and was a greatly respected figure locally, nationally and internationally - Royalty and Heads of State attended his funeral - and many are saddened at the passing of a quiet, modest man.

The quote that sums up what he endured in the trenches of France is an excerpt from his book - "The Last Fighting Tommy:"

"We came across a lad from A company. He was ripped open from his shoulder to his waist by shrapnel and lying in a pool of blood. When we got to him, he said: 'Shoot me'. He was beyond human help and, before we could draw a revolver, he was dead. And the final word he uttered was 'Mother.' I remember that lad in particular. It's an image that has haunted me all my life, seared into my mind."

Whilst no-one in their right mind could think that war is a good thing, please spend a moment thinking of all the service personnel from all countries who are sent to foreign lands to fight and die without being able to question the validity of what and who they are fighting for.

My deep respect for all those serving.

My deepest respect to Harry who fought in "The War To End All Wars," and my condolences to his family.

Hey Daddycool! Another sweet lyric, mate!

Not trying to upset the boat here and you are right Russ, but whilst looking for The Keeper (trad folk), I came across lots with the same title; also many is the time I've been looking for a song by an established artist on Chordie and the only ones I have found have been with the same name but different lyrics and tune.

I say as long as people know it's Robert Bonsall's "Three Little Words," then no worries!

(No insult intended, Russ smile )

Hey Zurf!

Sorry about that last before one! I made the fatal mistake of sitting down at the computer after a long night of too many drinks! Apologies for any bad reading caused!

Having said that, the info was good if the delivery was bad.

An elucidation:

You said you wanted 8 siganals whether mic or guitar - whatever you get will need at least 8 channels.

You want to play live (whether on your own stage or abroad) and record - do you want two mixers for two jobs or one mixer for both?

If you get one mixer for each job, neither mixer will be that much cop and their features (lack of) will soon wane assuming, that is, that you are making a considered investment and don't have money to burn.

If you get one mixer to do 2 jobs and look after it, you will find you spend less than two thirds the money to get double the features.

Assumong you decide to go with the one mixer option, what recording facilities do you want? Do you want to record your live band straight to stereo? You need to get the settings right on the mixer and cannot edit individual voxs/instruments post recording.

The Xenyx 2222FX

http://www.music123.com/Search/Default. … nyx+2222fx

will give you 8 mic pre-amps, no more, but will record at 24bit 96KHz to stereo right out of the box, with a built in effects processor. You can get it with the speakers mentioned earlier and do live performances right out of the boxes at $649.99.

Having said that, with this mixer there is little point in getting a decent seperate soundcard as you will have limited outputs from the mixer/limited inputs for seperate tracks going into the computer.

Might you want to edit individual instruments or voxs on recordings? You will need to get a seperate soundcard with 8 seperate inputs (1 for each mic/instrument) if you are going to record the band live.

This being the case, the Xenyx 2442 will give you stereo 24bit 96KHz (better than CD quality) right out of the box and has 10 mic preamps and 8 direct outs for future recordings with a decent soundcard with more than 2 inputs. AND it's only $50 more for the package with the aforementioned speakers and its got the same built in FX unit - Record (as soon as you have a free computer) and Live ready right out of the boxes - $699.99.

Do you want to play with the live set up and get into the recording later treating the whole thing as a gradual process over several/many months or years and maybe spend a little more than an all-at-once buy? Then the Xenyx 1600 will give you serious mixer facilities at a budget cost - 12 mic preamps, 6 auxilliaries, 12 direct outs but no FX and no USB recording output, stereo or otherwise.

There are other mixers. This is my studio mixer:

http://www.dancetech.com/aa_dt_new/hardware/IMAGES/soundcraft_spirit_studio_main.jpg

It cost £1000 in 1999 and they aren't made any more. I have a channel strip (preamp and features from 1 channel of a mixer that would cost £250,000) that cost half as much as my mixer because I wanted to record 1 input (usually a vox via a £500 mic) as well as any studio in the world and know that the £1000 soundcard that has 8 simultaneous inputs/outputs (16 when interfaced with the £1000 digital 8 track tape) my mixer won't degenerate the sound in any way! (It's also no slouch in itself and I use it for all electric instrument inputs and backing voxs.)

You probably don't want to spend as much as I did on a mixer but have something that will give you decent results and features that will grow with you as you get more into things.

I don't work for or get paid by Behringer, Music123 or Harbinger. I do own a Behringer - Ultracurve Pro DEQ2496, a measurement mic, a jackfield and a stompbox tuner which I'm delighted with and I've worked with their mixers which are very good.

I spent £700 on my mixeramp without speakers and wish to goodness that someone had told me just the live part of what I've said.

I hope you get what you are happy getting (whoever makes it) and that you are delighted with using it for many, many years to come and hope I neither came/have come across like a salesman or too vehemently, but but instead have given considered professional advice based on the requirements you set out.

Gans pup bollonjeth oll da! smile

The reason that a slower burn rate is more reliable than a faster has to do with the way that bits are recorded on the CD.   A CD records a bit of data by "burning" a small hole where the laser will read a one or a zero.   If the recorder is writing more data (at 4x or 8x) speed, it has less time to "burn" the hole into the disk.   It's like if you have a water hose and you're trying to soak a bunch of kids.  If you only soak one kid, you can get him pretty wet.  If you have 4 kids, you can't get them as wet in the same amount of time.

Now, as recording technology progresses, this will (and to a certain degree already has) become less of a problem, and I'd expect that in the future, you'll be able to burn disks reliably at higher and higher speeds.

Yep! MSB LSB!

Very well said, sir!!! cool
