Gibson ES335 or a Martin DC-16GTE

I'm probably spoiled with the Line6 with all the presets ... I imagine with yours you might have to come up with one or two stompboxes to the get the sound you need ... a good MetalCore or MetalZone Boss stomp would help for the sound

I also have a Marshall MG 30DFX that I can't get a Metallica sound from ... the best I can suggest is do a google search for Crate amp settings and see what you find ... I did the same for my Line6 and Marshall and found a lot of good settings

I wont give you the technical definition but I'll make it musician friendly ... A noise gate or noise suppressor eliminates unwanted noise, static, hissing or interference from reaching the amp ... some amps have a noise gate already inside (for example, the Line6 Spider III series comes with a noise gate that you activate yourself) ... a great Noise Suppressor is the NS-2 from Boss

http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/NS-2/

I mostly use Boss stompboxes and I highly recommend the NS-2 ... you can buy them relatively cheap at under $100

LOVE the ES335 ... when I have enough $$$ that guitar will round out my collection ... I love the bluesy rock tones on it ... especially since I play a lot of The Cult and U2 songs

Sweet pickup deaken ... I used to have two Schecters (Omen 6 and Hellraiser FR) ... changing the strings is way tricky ... my suggestion is to bring it to a shop for restringing or you can go to youtube.com and type in Floyd Rose string changing and you should get a lot of hits ... I never restrung mine due to the complexity of it and making sure it sounded right

Have fun though ... you have a sweet metal guitar for under $500

If you're new to the guitar world, I would suggest bringing it into a guitar shop and have them set it up for you ... it's hard to do it yourself if you've never played before ... they should set it up for free for you (this ensures you will come back and shop from them) ... if they charge you, I would look for another place only if it's too much $$$

What amp are you using ?  I play some Metallica but I run my Les Paul through a Line6 SpiderIII 75 and I can pretty much tweak it to fit the Metallica sound

Whatever brand you choose, it's a MUST to try it out and see if it suits you ... a $500 low-end Martin might be good but if you don't like how it sounds or feels, you're going to exchange it later on ... everyone on here has gone through a number of acoustics I imagine before they finally found the one they want ...

I went through 3 acoustic guitars before I finally settled on an Ovation Celebrity Koa ($499) ... later on I'll get my more expensive $1400 Martin

I agree with 06 ... the Line6 Spider III (10?) makes an affordable model for $99 ... it's a good beginners amp and comes with some effects you can learn from ... although I will say for clean acoustic sounds it's not the best you're going to get ...

Thomas is correct as far as the Marshall ... I have it specifically for my acoustic stuff ... I rarely use it for my Les Paul; for that I use my Line6 Spider III 75 and it's perfect ... although a good noise gate or suppresor is a must

The easiest way to learn strum patterns is to do a youtube.com search of the song ... you'll find loads of people have videos up of the songs you're looking for ... it's a great help and I use it quite frequently

Thanks guys I'll check them out ... I like the video sites that show it "close up" so you can really see how they're playing

I'm trying to learn how to "finger pick".  Does anyone know of some good sites (not DVDs) that demonstrate how to learn finger picking?

Thanks!

Agreed Alvee ... I didnt get really "hooked" until I was able to play that first song and then something "clicked" and I got the bug ... I've been playing rock, country, metal, folk songs for the past 2 years and last weekend, for the first time, actually started playing "Pop" songs like Dido, Robbie Williams, Peter Gabriel, etc.

It's really suprising how far you will come along in a short time span ... once you learn open chords, barre chords, and power chords you'll be EXTREMELY happy

One recommendation is to try and not limit yourself to what you learn ... keep an open mind to everything ... find out what you like, what you don't like ... for me as an example, I'm not great at Barre Chords so I find ways around it by learning other chord variations and it helps expand your knowledge

If you like Johnny Cash I HIGHLY recommend the cover of "Ring of Fire" by Social Distortion

Now I have something to look forward too ... I just bought an Ovation Celebrity Koa ... nice insight guys thanks!

The Clark Brothers were amazing ... a lot of talent with those guys ... I've seen them as the back-up band on American Idol as well ... speaking of Christian Bands, I loved Stryper too

My favorite band is U2 but I'm also partial to old metal bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc.

I used to run the sound board for a praise band where the guitarist was formerly the lead for Stryper.  He was a gentle man with lots of kids and a crazy good guitarist.

Wow that's pretty slick Zurf ... I remember the lead guitarist was VERY talented
