I'm good Zurf... That first day was the hard one for me. I've been around this kind of stuff a lot before so it wasn't "that" rough on me... You get kinda desensitized to a point... It had just been a few years and when it's people that you know and see often it impacts you a little more/differently... The wife on the other hand (having never seen anything like this before) is still having a hard time. She arose to the situation and jumped right in helping and I think that's made it worse for her... She was holding the girls hand, comforting her, while Major' Evans and I worked on her. She's getting better everyday though and the busy schedule we've had has helped to keep her mind of it...

bunbun, the chief stopped by and offered us counselling yesterday... He said a lot of the rescue workers were struggling with it and they were having group counselling (or private if you preferred) and they were also offering it to the community... I'm Okay... I know I did all that was possible and am thankful I could help as much as I did. The shot was upper right quadrant (2 inches from sternum center) piercing the lung... With a high powered rifle in that area (with the way they tumble on impact) there wasn't a lot I could do but try and I knew that from the start.... I sealed the wound as she was pulling air from it and stanched the flow the best I could but by the time time the unit arrived she was coded... We tried CPR and defib for awhile but you know.

The other girl seems to be stabilizing and right now things are looking hopeful for her...

The guy cleaning the gun was a 20 year old guy just engaged and starting his life....  He had just moved in about 3-4 months ago but seemed to be a real decent fellow. He's a fellow picker and he and I had talked/picked a few times on mine or his front porch.... I'll never forget his face yesterday....  As I was tending the wound I looked up when I heard the most awful scream to see him drop to his knees in the edge of the yard when he came out and realized what he had done...  I've never seen a persons face so twisted with anguish... He's taking it very hard... The Sheriff department has him in custody on suicide watch as he's that unstable at the moment...

Thanks again everyone for you kind words and prayers!

Thanks for the kind words everyone... I'm sure the other families involved appreciate your prayers and support as well. It's been a day... We left shortly after the last ambulance pulled away and giving a statement to the detective... The media was starting to come in droves and we wanted to avoid all the questions... Got home this afternoon and had the SBI and FBI waiting to talk to me.... The other young girl involved has survived surgery but is still unstable in critical condition. The older woman was grazed by several fragments but all injures were relatively minor and she's fine.

Here's a pic of the scene as the last girl was strapped in ready for transport...

Thanks   No this just happened... see my link to the story in the post above yours.

http://www.wwaytv3.com/2011/12/23/devel … n-shooting   Mines the grey and white house next door.... They quoted me wrong... it was the 16 yo that passed on scene....

It's been a rough day guys......

Today's my Birthday and the family and I were fixing to leave for a day of shopping when we heard a gunshot....  We look around and hear someone screaming next door. Wife and I run over and shes calling 911. We round their van to find a terrible site....

Laying there is a 15 and 16 year old girl with gunshot wounds to their chests.... Both are in real bad shape but the 16 yo is worse so I begin treatment... The mother is beside me crying and craddling/rocking the 15 yo all of us covered in blood..... I tried the best I could with the help of another neighbor but the 16 yo girl (Jasmine) died looking in my eyes with me telling her it'd all be okay......  The 15 yo was bad as well and it's doubtful she'll make it either.... It's been really hard this morning..... I worked EMS for years as a paramedic and quite after an incident similar to this... The wife is in shambles as shes never experienced anything this terrible.... Can't quit shaking now that it's all over.... Guy across the street was cleaning a high powered rifle and it went off going through his house and hitting the family getting out of their car next door...

My heart goes out to that family.... I can't imagine what they're going through.

I'm a hard man and I've cried my eyes out like a baby this morning......

Sure it's a '59?

I'm seeing the serial number as A-2480...  E251N would be the model # I believe.

Gibson used the A prefix numbers from 47-61 and # 2480 would put it in the range for a '48.

'59 would be between 28880-32284       '48 was 1305-2665 #'s

But then you say it says epiphone by Gibson and they didn't merge till '57....    Hmmmmm

another oddity, if it was from 58-69 the model would be E252 for an electric broadway....

Several things aren't adding up and I'm betting it's older than 58 and pre-merger....

I think "American Pie" is a great song for beginners to practice with... http://chordie.com/chord.pere/www.russe … canPie.cpm
Lots of changes and it uses several chords but they're all open and easy. Starts off with just a single strum per chord making it easy to play at the start (could be played most of the way through that way if your just starting out) but as you progress the song begs for some creative strumming smile  Think I'll enjoy playing it right now wink

Location??

They never hand numbered them that I'm aware of....  The first "Pro" models had handwritten labels but they didn't have serial numbers. Is the number on the neck block inside the guit??

Wow, I used to do the home brew thing but, like Zurf, find it just too footery (as they say in Scotland), and threw the lot out. What about wine - anyone make their own wine?

Pretty much everyone in my family does...  I come from a long line of bootleggers smile We still have shine stills on our farm.   (Shhhh...   don't tell anyone...lol)   Anyone up for some 1st run stumphole wink

If you want to try it on something smaller/less expensive then check out the uke kits at Stewart McDonald.  I built a baritone from one of their kits and it turned out real nice. I have plans to build my own 14 fret om (Redwood top with Taz Blackwood back and sides & ebony bindings).

smile  That looks like it would have been a blast!!

No Prob smile Congrats on the new world record! big_smile  You were one of the leprechauns right?

It was copied into a new thread a few days ago by zurf smile The post in your thread could be deleted by a chat mod if you like though...

Do you ever play with others?? I took a few lessons (4) after I'd been playing about 6 months just to make sure I wasn't developing any bad habits and they were helpful but not that much so... I've learned sooo much more by playing with friends and fellow pickers.  Especially if they're more advanced and are pushing you to keep up but even playing with absolute beginners is helpful and gives you a sense of accomplishment to be able to show what you've learned.

You know I'm between you and the jam... You're welcome to drive here and ride the rest of the way with me smile  Come a day or two early and we'll hang out, do some fishing/paddling, and of course plenty of picking!  I plan to attend this year especially after last year smile I showed late and didn,t participate the first night and then left early the next day because the wife was feeling bad due to a bad sunburn from our 12 mile paddle..  I only got to play one song right before leaving and wasn't prepared for it and forgot the lyrics..lol   So I need some redemption smile

You'd only need a real light bevel because it'll be doubled when you butt joint 2 of them... I'd simply take a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a block of wood and just give the edge 1 or 2 real light rubs at a 45* angle. Practice on some scraps by sanding them and then holding them together untill you get it the way you want it...

I think it'd look good if you take the edge of the natural and stained strips before you glue them and very lightly bevel the top edges. Then do the same after you cut it in strips. It'd make it look like each piece was set by hand... You'd end up with a very slight beveled joint around each square. Once the board is assembled you could apply 2 coats of sanding sealer and lightly sand it with some 4-600 paper. Then take a darker stain and lightly rube the whole board and buff with a clean cloth. The darker stain will lay is the bevel giving it nice lines and a vintage look (this will also hide all the glue joints). Then I'd use a semi-gloss Sparurethane to finish it with. Have them add a touch of raw umber to the clear and it'll give it the look of a nicely aged looking finish.   Just some thought's I had when watching the vid...

Looks like a real nice project russ and you seem to be doing a great job with it! To sand the glue off the sides of the squares try putting the sandpaper on a smooth level surface like a desktop and then gently work the squares edge against the paper... It'll keep the edge true and make for a nicer joint when you reglue.

If you decide to make another one let me know. I have a couple ideas for you to add some nice little touches with very little extra effort.

Landing on the right fret just comes with practce... You know how it goes smile Start slow and land it correctly and then build up speed. Eventually it'll be automatic.

As for the squeaks, Elixers help a lot! If your strumming it, keep strumming through the change while your barre finger is muting the strings (during your slide up) and it'll replace the squeak with a percussive strum. If your using a pluck pattern (similar to what I show here for the song http://www.youtube.com/user/Guitarpixx? … mi7yzqV1Uo ) then you can cover it that way. Also playing it with E and A shaped barre chords would minimize your movement...

Other than that you can just try to release the barre a little more to lessen the squeak...
