well what your strumming patern is, is a standard shuffle  listen to other songs with distinctive style like Sunshine of your love during the chorusy part. and let me assure you, i am no tabb guy.  i pretty much only strum with a few riffs thrown in. what i do is try to make the strum take on the words and melody, and when writing my own music take on the meaning of the words in my brain.

as for chord progressions do what sounds nice to you.  play every chord you know in different paterns until you hit what your looking for.  also a different struming patern to the same old chord progressions puts a whole new spin on things.

hey, im a girl, im 14, been playing for about 2 years now. its so awesome that so many chicks are getting into guitar! ive recently reached the "people besides my family really WANT to hear me play" stage, and I totally enjoy seeing the look on guys' faces when I tell them Ive been playing for 2 years (especially the guys who think their so awesome just cuz they can play guitar hero)

i know its awesome to be acknowleged and have people want to actually hear you ive been playing for for abour 5 1/2 years now and it only gets more interesting and fun and welcome to the newer members and i never realized how many different nationalities especially th UK (where i want to go to school)

Well if you would like my humbel opinion learn barchordes. KramL is absolutley correct barchords are essential to the instrument electric or acustic.  try going for C and G minors and their sharp companions and work your way up back the fret board.  the fact is that barchordes are important for guitar in general.

here yah go

singinig has never been a problem and chords are my thing not riffs or tabs.  buuut i like what you said and i so like to make up my own songs....then i get frustrated i cant make up words...at all it just doesnr work.  like ive got a tune stuck in my head but the words are just a backround hum meaningless sound do you understand?
