I made a couple small changes to lyrics and chords.

I may put up a version on the cloud today...

Deadeye
That is an awesome song!!!

Love the lyrics and the rhythym

Sounds like a mix of Dylan and Ray Wylie Hubbard - both of whom I hold in highest regard!
If I were to sugest a change - I would switch the lines around in the chorus

The open road  sends an invitation
I'm riding like hell with no destination
I got nothing left to kiss but the bottle
Girl I got  nothing left to hold but the throttle.

with that said - don't change it unless YOU want too - it's pretty damn perfect as it is!
WELL  DONE !!

The reality for me is that if I get anything right it's a " TOTAL " a miracle.   Someone who's a genuine guitar teacher would probably have an anxiety attack watching me play and "want to turn off if the mic if I was singing along" .

OH YEAH - WHAT HE SAID !!!!

smile

Zurf you nailed it buddy !  I just modified your quote a bit to fit me a little better smile

That diagram reminded me of a video game - like a Pac Man or something of the sort.

I can't even figure out out my Trio Band creator - never mind all these gadgets. smile

Someday I hope to dedicate more time to learning these things.

I do like to read about what you guys post however, it is interesting even if I don't get all of it.

Thanks all for your comments.
It's a difficult topic and I'm not against people having guns - in fact I have a couple that I use for hunting.
I am against people having more firepower than police. I have a problem also withthe fact that politicians don't act because they are afraid of losing the backing of the NRA in upcoming elections.
To be a coach in my state there are about 10 regulations you have to comply with prior to ever being able to coach a soccer or basketball game at a public school.  Is it difficult - yup !  But is it worth it yep !  Kids are safer !!

Citizens should be willing to go through the same type of procedures to have guns.

Jan I like the Japan video - might be a little non-applicable to us, but many of their tenets could be used.

Thanks again everyone...... If I could sing I'd record it and you tube it -  but alas ...... sad

Thanks again everyone!!

This song springs from a line in the message from Peatle's Mum.

I wasn't sure at first where I was gonna go with it, but I knew it was a really cool line.  However,   after the fatal shooting of 17 people at Parkland High school in Florida, and the failure to protect our citizens from these attacks..... well I knew it fit - at least to me.

I am not trying to say we should get rid of guns or anything , but there is no reason why a citizen needs an AR-15.  Especially people that have a background of mental illness.
What really makes me angry is that no one seems to do anything about it.  the politicians pay their lip service of sorrow and make empty promises - and then time comes along and  they hope we'll just move on and forget.  Well it's time to not do that any more . so hence this song !

kinda reminds me of the line posed to America in the song  OHIO by CSNY - about the shooting of the college kids @ Kent State in 1970

" how can you run when you know ? "

(sorry if I ranted here! smile

Anyway - here is a link to the song I wrote in chordpro format in my songbook

http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/?url= … ranspose=0

or here it is in regular form

[Song]
{t: Throw Away The Swords}

[Am]Onward you pious soldiers, preaching  your sacred rights
Seems your [Em]heart is  numb to all the pain, and [Dm]all the tear filled [Am]nights
Newtown, Vegas, and Columbine,  Sutherland ,  and Fort Hood
Blacks[Em]burg, Parkland, San  Bernadino, said  they [Dm]did all they [Am] could

[Am]Well If no one acts, then nothing changes,  heartaches will  come again
Like an [Em]ocean tide, they keep coming back, with the[Dm] hurt of a hurri[Am]cane
Children dying, parents crying, there's  crosses where they last stood
Oh we [Em] say we're sorry, but we don't act, and  it  [Dm]never turns out like it [Am]should

Chorus:
[F]Listen to the gentle hearts of kindness, won't you [C] listen  their calls
[F]Heed their voices, feel their pain,    fix this [C]country  before it[G] falls
[F]Can't stand by no more, it's time to act, no more [C]false prophet words
It's [G]time to stand up and be counted,   it's [F]time to throw a[Em]way the [Am]swords.

[Am]There's  no reasons at all  why we cant protect, the innocent from the gun
time to[Em] break the bondage, from in the past ,[Dm] the way such things were [Am] done
Press those politicians, who make the rules,  don't leave them any choice
It's up[Em] to us to make a difference,  time  for [Dm]us to rise up as one [Am] voice

Chorus:
Chorus:
[F]Listen to the gentle hearts of kindness, won't you [C] listen  their calls
[F]Heed their voices, feel their pain,    fix this [C]country  before it[G] falls
[F]Can't stand by no more, it's time to act, no more [C]false prophet words
It's [G]time to stand up and be counted,   it's [F]time to throw a[Em]way the [Am]swords.
it's [F]time to throw a[Em]way the [Am]swords.
it's [F]time to throw a[Em]way the [Am]swords.

Beamer - sounds great ---nice smooth beat and" jump up and downs" on the neck.  I liked that subtle little pause around the 1:45 mark - it set you up for - "What's coming next ? "

good work buddy !

Amy
I was just listening to some of my songs that the terrific people of chordie recorded for me.

When I listened to you cover my song Angels In The Room - it really stirred some feelings - you sound a lot like Joan Baez.

We are really missing you and your voice here on chordie - and for the new members - they really could use a dose to verify what I'm saying.

You and Jan have golden voices - they are so beautiful, they really need  to be shared not hidden in a cloud created by work or other things that get in the way . smile

I know you have extraordinary circumstances, but if you get the time- I sure would love to hear one of your songs, maybe even a duet with your Jim ?

just saying out loud what i'm a thinkin' !

Thanks Jandle. The difference is that I played those sober and relaxed on a Saturday morning when no one else was home instead of half in the bag in an evening squeezed in between laundry, dinner, dishes, errands, and homework help.

Way to go Zurf !!
Love the description - probably most everyone on here - so busy - yet chordie is the place to somehow escape and relax - have some fun along with the interaction.

I have have been ridiculously busy and am just managing to be able to comment here to keep in touch.  I have had no time to play much or write at all.

hopefully soon things will calm down.   I enjoy listening to all of you who post these songs - and I am jealous of your abilities.

keep on keeping on!!

peatle

What a great story, fantastic woman of strength.
I hope you don't mind, but there is a line in there that immediately screamed at me that it has the possibility of being the centerpiece of a song.  I won't say the line yet - as i have no promise it will come to fruition, but i am hopeful.
My mom was incredible as well before she left me in her 80's. I won't go into detail - but she was left alone at 41 with me as an infant, along with my 9 older siblings. My father was killed by an industrial accident. We never had money, but I never wanted for anything. All of my siblings are still alive today, all very well off with families and economics is not an issue with any of us - and to the soul - we all know it was our mom that was the core of our lives.

I have three daughters, and if anyone were to tell me that females were inferior, well.....let's just say there would be a crisis at hand.  As a teacher in school for 40 years, i make sure that my students live by the same credo your Mum said ....

* do not judge
*have faith
*celebrate diversity- we don't all have to agree - but we do need to be respectful of each other
*understand that we all make mistakes - it's called experience in life
*be kind and forgiving
*get educate- it opens a multitude of opportunities
*make the world a better place
*love deeply

Peatle thanks again for sharing - you were blessed to have such a mum

LOL Zurf   It seems that in my post,  my fingers were committing a "capital" offense"  smile
