Just located a sound sample the song - it's a perky little Doris Day version . . . not quite the version I recall, but it may help you get a handle on the tune.

You were correct, Wilf Carter (Montana Slim)did do a version, but have been unable to find a sound file of his take on the tune.

Thomas - It is a beautiful song - I heard it long ago but am also fuzzy on the melody. It has probably been covered by umpteen folks over the years.

Your mother will really appreciate hearing this lovely old favorite.  I have been through a similar situation with my mom.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and all your loved ones in this time of transition.

WickedAxeOfFury - Love the imagery and feel of the words. The ethereal nature of the poetry reminds me very much of Yes lyrics - vivid & tactile yet cosmic & mysterious.

Although Yes is no longer actively touring they crafted some of the most absolutely haunting and beautiful music ever recorded.  All very complex rhythmically and melodically - much of their stuff used complex time signatures which melded well with the vivid lyrics.

I like your song - check out Yes "Close to the Edge" and some of their other albums and you might get some good ideas as to how to set this lyric to music.

hello orchard12 - you are not actually doing anything wrong - chordie uses programming voodoo to convert the "chords inside the lyrics" format into the pretty page layouts (chords above the lyrics) that you view.  The 'chords inside' file format you are referring to is called chordpro format and it is one effective way to embed the chords within the lyrics of a song.

If all you want to do is simply print a song that you have found on chordie,  then just hit the 'print song' button that is off to the righthand side of the screen when you are viewing the song.  It will print out very nicely with the chords properly positioned.  There is no need to copy & paste the song into a text editor or word processor in order to print.

If you want to edit a song (correct or change words & chords) the best way to accomplish that task is to open the song using the 'edit' key that is to the right of the song's  title in your songbook.

Hope this helps . . .

hello ifergetstuff - try this link to the artist's official site.  There are several tabs submitted by the band's fans:

<a href="http://www.axel-rudi-pell.de/tabs.htm" target="_blank">http://www.axel-rudi-pell.de/tabs.htm</a>

There is a very short tab for 'Silent Angel' listed.  Hope this helps.

For me, a song begins with an idea.  The idea could be a phrase or a rhythm or topic or a melody or an emotional state.  What I am learning is that the more you try to write songs, the more ideas there are to work with . . . I scribble lots of stuff down.

It is tempting for me to get stuck on one particular idea and treat it as if it is the most special and precious idea that anybody has ever had . . . But, if I get too hung up on a single idea, then I just get bogged down trying to make it perfect.

So instead, I try to have several ideas going concurrently and then work at making incremental progress on them.  Typically, some ideas will finally come to fruition and the pieces will finally fall together.

Also, just as typically some ideas never seem to gel or get beyond a certain point.  It's not that they were 'bad' ideas . . . it's just that they haven't worked out yet.  I never discard the ideas that aren't progressing, I just keep trying to have more ideas . . .

It is in a different key here, and uses slightly different chord voicings - check out the whole site, you are bound to find other things that tickle your fancy.

Hello awkward strummer - try this link.  The site has a big songbook in pdf format, so you have to open big chinks of it to find what you want.  Lots of great stuff at the site -

I seem to remember that Tom Lehrer also did a wickedly funny send up of this great old tune . . .

hello terrykemm - You're correct, the chords should be aligned above the lyric - if the original file chordie has found is properly constructed, this will occur.

However, there are some original files that are just not built quite right - consequently, they will not look very pretty.  Unfortunately, the 'Misc. Christmas' section in the index is chock full of such badly-built songs.

Many of these selections have been 'prettied up' by chordie users who have published songbooks in the "Christmas" section.  Personally, I picked several traditional Carols from 'Misc. Christmas' and edited them to where the chords and lyrics are properly aligned.  I also added verses that were missing.

Check out the Christmas section - you might find exactly what you're looking for . . .

hello philfire - I'm not an expert on the programming voodoo that is behind chordie, but here is my understanding of how this works.

When you transpose a song, the changes are simply applied to what you are viewing - it does not affect the original source file.  Once you transpose a song in your songbook, it will appear with that transposition the next time you open the song in your songbook - so there is no need to 're-save' the song in it's transposed form.

If you open a song in your songbook using the 'edit' button, you can see the original source file.  Mistakes or ommisions in the original file can be fixed in the edit pane.  These changes, however, only affect the file as you view it in your songbook (not the original source file).  Every time you open the edited song in your songbook, the edit changes you made will appear in what you see on the screen.

Somebody with more technical skills can probably offer a more complete explanation, but from a chordie-user's standpoint, this should be helpful.

hello again - found a site that has a 'convert guitar tabs to piano tabs' utility. Can't vouch for how well (or if) it works, but here is the link:

<a href="http://tabnabber.com/viewTab.asp?song=Christmas-Winter_Wonderland.txt&tabID=687&nick=bizzle&sArtist=Christmas&sName=Walking+in+a+Winter+Wonderland" target="_blank"> http://tabnabber.com/viewTab.asp?song=C … nter_Wonde rland.txt&tabID=687&nick=bizzle&sArtist=Christma s&sName=Walking+in+a+Winter+Wonderland</a>

This will get you to the song.  Look in the upper left of the screen for the guitar/piano converter thingy.

hello musicalmonkey - found "Winter Wonderland" arranged for 4-part vocal harmony (SATB) for free at this site:

<a href="http://home.iprimus.com.au/karpiniec/freemusi.htm" target="_blank">http://home.iprimus.com.au/karpiniec/freemusi.htm</a>

Find your song on the listing and then download it as an acrobat file.  Although this particular arrangement might not be precisely what you seek, it will at least give you something to work with.

Actually, this site has several very nice vocal arrangements - I shall go back to it and am sure to find some stuff I can use also.

Hello Rodders56 - And welcome to chordie.  Glad to hear that you are recovering from a heart attack and that you have some fun toys to play with.  Congratulations on using your recovery time in such challenging and rewarding pursuit.  Certainly, learning to play guitar (or any instrument) is a better way to convelesce than just sitting around moping and staring at the television for months at a time.

What are your tastes in music to play?  Are you totally self-taught, or do you have a mentor to guide you through the wilderness?

Hello bigmann706 - The chordie main index lists many songs by a group named 'Perfect Circle'.  Check the 'P' listings under the Artist tab.  Seems that many of the listings are duplicates, but perhaps what you are looking for is somewhere within all those listings?

Hope this helps . . .

Hello Dreamer85 - "Don't Answer Me" is indexed by chordie and there are two versions that appear.  The versions are slightly different, so perhaps one of them has what you need.  Look under 'Alan Parsons Project' in the main chordie index.

Also, go to the Wikipedia article on the band's chordie page.  The article has links to the official band site.  The official band site links to several fan sites.  There might be lyrics and chords buried somewhere within these fan sites.

Hope this is helpful.

Hello mowcock - Check the main chordie index under 'Manfred Mann'.  There are 12 different songs listed there.  All of the listings have chords and some of the listings have tabs for the riffs along with other embellishments.

Also, check the Wikipedia article where you will find links to the band's site.  Their official webite has tons of lyrics neatly organized by title and album.  Some of the songs also have sound files.  Doo Wah Ditty, Ditty Dum Ditty Doo!

Chordie indexes many thousands of songs, but there are some artists and songs that just don't show up (yet) on the chordie lists. If what you seek is not listed on chordie, try finding it using Google.

When you are looking for a song, a simple Google search can yield happy results if you use these tips:

Enter something like this into the Google search blank:

song title artist name chords lyrics

Then, just hit the search button.

For example:

til it shines bob seger chords lyrics

Be careful to spell the song's title and artist's name correctly.

Also, be sure to put the 'chords lyrics' words into the search.

Sifting through the various results you get might take a little time.

Generally, what you seeking will be within the first few results.  However, sometimes you will need to dig a little deeper.

Also, the song you seek might be already indexed in chordie under a different artist's name.  So, always try the "text search" on here on chordie - you never know what will pop up.  Use either the song's title or a disctinctive phrase from the lyric.

Another tip is to Google up just the artist's name and find fan sites.  These sites often have lyrics and chords somewhere, or they may link to another site with the artist's songs.  Some fan sites also have a forum where you might be able to get in touch with somebody who share's your interest in that particular artist.

If a song has been covered by other artists, the fan sites might also note who recorded the song you seek.  If that is the case, start a new Google (or chordie) search using the covering artist's name.

If you are looking for something by an artist that was active in pre-internet times, then your best bet might be just to purchase a songbook.  Amazon and eBay have listings for published songbooks.

The way I first 'discovered' chordie was while searching for lyrics and chords for "When I Paint My Masterpiece" by Dylan and the Band.  I found what I was looking for,  plus I discovered one of the coolest sites on the net!

If anybody else has some song search tips - please share them here.

Hello tadot - There are six Steve Goodman songs indexed on chordie. Given that he must have written and recored hundreds of songs, it seems like there should be more somewhere.

The chords to "My Old Man" is nowhere to be found on the web - (at least looking under Steve Goodman). However, since so many of his songs were covered by (and made famous by) other artists, there are probably more Goodman songs out there listed under other artists.

The Wikipedia article on Goodman has links to some fan & tribute sites.  Perhaps there is a listing of artists who covered Goodman's songs - and perhpas such a list could help you find more.

Hope this helps - should you find a new treasure trove of Goodman songs, let me know.

hello tschiwj - Since this is a fairly new release, there just hasn't been anything posted to web yet.  However, this band has a very dedicated following.  Speak up  within the forums on these fan sites, and I'm certain you'll find somebody else who is trying to figure out the songs on their latest album.
